Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Mask

The room became colder the moment Daniel Whitmore Jr. stepped inside.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Ethan stared at the man standing in front of him, trying to find something familiar.

A gesture.

A movement.

A small piece of himself.

But there was nothing.

Only the face of a stranger carrying the blood of his family.

Richard slowly stepped forward.

“Michael.””

The man’s expression hardened.

“I told you.””

His voice was calm.

“My name is Daniel.””

Clara stood up.

Tears filled her eyes.

“Michael…”

For the first time, the man’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

A flicker of pain.

Then it disappeared.

“Don’t call me that.””

Clara looked heartbroken.

“I gave you that name.””

“You gave me nothing.””

The words cut through the room.

Richard looked at him.

“I thought you were dead.””

Daniel Jr. laughed quietly.

“You did.””

A pause.

“And that was the easiest lie for everyone to believe.””

Ethan watched the exchange.

There was something strange about him.

This man wasn’t acting like someone who had just reunited with his family.

He acted like someone who had waited years for this moment.

Someone who wanted them to suffer.

“Why are you here?”” Ethan asked.

Daniel Jr. looked at him.

Then smiled.

“So you’re Ethan.””

The way he said it made Ethan uncomfortable.

“Yeah.””

“The perfect son.””

Ethan frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel Jr. walked farther into the room.

“It means you got everything I was supposed to have.””

Richard’s face tightened.

“No.””

Daniel Jr. looked at him.

“You don’t get to say no.””

His voice suddenly became louder.

“You don’t get to rewrite history because you feel guilty now.””

Ethan looked at Richard.

“Dad?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Because there was truth behind the accusation.

Not all of it.

But enough.

Daniel Jr. continued.

“When I was six years old, I waited outside a hospital room for a man who promised he would come back.””

Clara covered her mouth.

“I didn’t know—”

“You never knew anything.””

The anger in his voice shocked everyone.

“I spent years being told my father abandoned me.””

Richard stepped closer.

“I never abandoned you.””

Daniel Jr. laughed.

“You stayed with your comfortable life.””

“No.””

“You built a family.””

Richard looked broken.

“Yes.””

“And I became a story nobody talked about.””

Silence.

Ethan felt something he didn’t expect.

Not hatred.

Pity.

Because whatever Daniel Jr. had become, someone had created that pain.

“Uncle Daniel did this,” Ethan said.

The room changed.

Daniel Jr. looked at him.

For a moment, Ethan thought he would agree.

But he didn’t.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

Daniel Jr. smiled.

“My father didn’t create my pain.””

He looked toward Richard.

“Your father did.””

Richard’s face fell.

Ethan stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Daniel Jr. looked at him.

“You think you can protect him?””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice was steady.

“I think everyone in this room has been hurt.””

Daniel Jr. studied him.

“You’re different than I expected.””

“Why?””

“Because I expected Richard to raise someone exactly like him.””

Ethan looked at his father.

“And what is that?””

“A man who hides behind good intentions.””

Richard closed his eyes.

The accusation landed.

But Ethan noticed something.

Daniel Jr. kept blaming Richard.

Not Daniel.

Not Sophia.

Richard.

Like he had been trained to.

“Where is your father?”” Ethan asked.

Daniel Jr.’s smile faded.

“He’s gone.””

Richard immediately looked up.

“What?””

“Daniel Whitmore is gone.””

“When?””

The timing made Ethan uneasy.

Right after the truth started coming out.

“Where did he go?””

Daniel Jr. looked at him.

“That’s the wrong question.””

“What’s the right one?””

Daniel Jr. walked toward the table.

He picked up the photograph of Sophia and Daniel.

“The right question is why he left.””

Ethan stared.

“Why?””

“Because he knew everything was about to collapse.””

Sophia whispered:

“You’re lying.””

Everyone turned.

Daniel Jr. looked at her.

“You still defend him?””

Sophia shook her head.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

Daniel Jr. laughed.

“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said tonight.””

Sophia looked down.

Ethan noticed something.

She wasn’t angry.

She was afraid.

“Where is Daniel?”” Ethan asked again.

Daniel Jr. looked at him.

“He went to the place where this all started.””

Richard’s face changed.

“No.””

Ethan saw it.

“What place?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Daniel Jr. did.

“The old Whitmore estate.””

The words meant something to Richard.

Something terrible.

“What happened there?”” Ethan asked.

Richard looked toward the window.

“The night Michael disappeared…”

He stopped.

Daniel Jr. finished.

“Was the night your father chose who mattered.””

Ethan looked at Richard.

“What does that mean?””

Richard whispered:

“It means Daniel gave me a choice.””

A pause.

“And I made the wrong one.””

Before Ethan could ask more, Daniel Jr.’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

Everyone noticed.

“What is it?”” Clara asked.

Daniel Jr. slowly turned the phone around.

A message.

Only four words.

*HE KNOWS ABOUT ETHAN.*

Daniel Jr. looked at Richard.

May you like

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.
