Chapter 4: The Woman at the Door
Nobody moved.
The voice outside the door had frozen the entire house.
Richard Whitmore stared toward the entrance like he had seen a ghost.
Ethan noticed.
His father had faced business wars, lawsuits, betrayal, and humiliation.
But this was different.
This was fear.
Real fear.
“Who is that?”” Ethan asked.
Richard didn’t answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the door.
Sophia slowly stepped backward.
And for the first time that night, Ethan saw something unexpected.
Sophia looked scared of the woman outside.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Scared.
Ethan’s hand tightened into a fist.
“Dad.””
Richard finally looked at him.
His lips parted.
But before he could speak, the knocking came again.
Three slow knocks.
Then a voice.
“Richard, please.””
The old man closed his eyes.
A painful memory seemed to pass across his face.
“I never thought you would come back.””
Ethan looked between them.
“You know her?””
Richard walked toward the door.
Every step looked heavier than the last.
When he opened it, the woman standing outside made Ethan forget how to breathe.
She looked to be around seventy years old.
Her silver hair was pulled back neatly.
She wore a simple dark coat.
Her eyes were tired.
But there was something familiar about her.
Something Ethan couldn’t explain.
The woman looked at Richard.
And tears immediately filled her eyes.
“Thirty years,” she whispered.
Richard said nothing.
“You really thought you could hide the truth forever?””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at him.
And her expression changed.
Pain.
Recognition.
Regret.
“Oh my God,” she whispered.
Richard moved quickly.
“Ethan, go upstairs.””
The command shocked him.
Because his father rarely raised his voice.
“No.””
Ethan stared at him.
“I’m done being the last person to know anything.””
The woman looked at Richard.
“He deserves the truth.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Not like this.””
“Then when?”” she asked.
“When another person uses it against him?””
The words hit harder because they were true.
Ethan looked at the woman.
“Who are you?””
The woman swallowed.
“My name is Clara Bennett.””
The name meant nothing.
Until Richard spoke.
“Clara…”
Ethan turned.
“You know her.””
Richard looked down.
“Yes.””
“How?””
A long silence followed.
Then Clara answered.
“Because I was the woman your father loved before your mother.””
The room became completely still.
Ethan stared at Richard.
His father looked away.
“I was young,” Richard said quietly.
Clara shook her head.
“We were both young.””
Sophia watched them carefully.
Almost like she was waiting for something.
Ethan noticed.
“You knew she was coming.””
Sophia didn’t respond.
That silence confirmed it.
Ethan turned sharply.
“You knew.””
Sophia looked uncomfortable.
“I…”
“How?””
Before she could answer, Clara spoke.
“Because she found me.””
Everyone looked at Sophia.
Richard’s face darkened.
“You contacted her?””
Sophia’s expression hardened again.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I wanted the truth exposed.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You wanted chaos.””
Sophia looked at him.
“You lied to everyone for thirty years.””
“And you destroyed my son’s life to punish me.””
The accusation hung between them.
Ethan looked at Clara.
“What truth?””
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“The truth is…”
She stopped.
Her hand touched her necklace.
A small silver pendant.
“I had a son.””
Ethan felt a strange chill.
Richard closed his eyes.
“Clara.””
She looked directly at Ethan.
“And he was born before you.””
The room went silent.
Ethan’s heartbeat became painfully loud.
“No.””
Clara looked devastated.
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“My father had one child.””
Richard looked at him.
“Ethan…”
“Don’t.””
The word came out sharper than he intended.
He looked at Clara.
“Are you saying you’re my father’s ex-girlfriend?””
“Yes.””
“And you had a son?””
“Yes.””
“And you’re saying he’s alive?””
Clara looked down.
“No.””
That answer surprised him.
“He died.””
A painful silence followed.
Richard looked away.
Ethan noticed something.
The sadness in his father’s eyes wasn’t fake.
It wasn’t guilt.
It was grief.
“What happened?””
Clara wiped her tears.
“Your father and I were planning to leave together.””
Richard’s face tightened.
“Clara.””
“But your grandfather threatened him.””
Ethan looked at Richard.
“Your grandfather?””
Richard nodded slowly.
“My father wanted control over everything.””
Clara continued.
“He told Richard that if he left the family business, he would destroy him.””
“And you stayed,” Ethan said.
Richard looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
“Because of money?””
“No.””
His father’s voice cracked.
“Because Clara was pregnant.””
Ethan froze.
Clara looked down.
“I was scared.””
Richard stepped closer.
“I thought I was protecting her.””
“But you weren’t,” Clara whispered.
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
Richard nodded.
“I wasn’t.””
Ethan looked at him.
“So what happened?””
Clara’s eyes moved toward Sophia.
“That’s the part she never told you.””
Sophia’s expression changed.
Ethan turned.
“What part?””
Clara reached into her purse.
She pulled out an old envelope.
“I found this in Daniel’s house.””
Richard immediately recognized it.
His face turned pale.
“No.””
Ethan took the envelope.
“What is it?””
Richard whispered:
“The letter I wrote to Clara.””
Ethan opened it.
Inside was a single page.
The handwriting was old.
The words were faded.
But one sentence immediately caught his attention.
*If anything happens to me, Daniel is responsible.*
Ethan looked up.
“Why would you write this?””
Richard didn’t answer.
Because before he could…
Sophia’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
Ethan saw the name.
Daniel.
And this time, Sophia didn’t answer.
She just stared.
May you like
Because Daniel was calling her.
And everyone in the room saw it.
