Chapter 8: The Choice That Broke a Family
The old Whitmore estate had been abandoned for twenty years.
But Richard remembered every hallway.
Every room.
Every painful second.
As they drove through the darkness, nobody spoke.
Ethan sat in the passenger seat beside Richard.
Daniel Jr. sat in the back with Clara.
Sophia had stayed behind.
Not because anyone trusted her.
Because nobody knew what to do with her anymore.
The silence between father and son felt heavier than the road ahead.
Finally, Ethan spoke.
“What choice did Daniel give you?””
Richard kept his eyes on the road.
“I thought I had buried that night.””
“That’s not an answer.””
Richard sighed.
“No.””
A long pause.
“It isn’t.””
The headlights cut through the empty road.
“When Daniel found out Clara had a son, he threatened me.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed that child was proof I had betrayed him.””
Ethan frowned.
“You mean because of the company?””
Richard shook his head.
“Because of power.””
He tightened his hands around the steering wheel.
“Daniel never wanted money.””
“What did he want?””
Richard looked at him.
“Control.””
The car became silent again.
“When he took Michael, he gave me one choice.””
Ethan turned.
“What choice?””
Richard swallowed.
“He said I could expose him…”
A pause.
“…or I could protect my public image.””
Ethan felt anger rising.
“And you chose your image?””
Richard’s eyes filled with pain.
“No.””
The answer surprised him.
“I chose to find Michael first.””
Ethan looked away.
“But you failed.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
That honesty hurt more than an excuse.
“I searched for years.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Richard’s voice broke.
“Because I failed before.””
He looked at Ethan.
“And I couldn’t lose you too.””
Ethan stared out the window.
For years, he thought his father was perfect.
Now he realized something worse.
His father wasn’t perfect.
He was human.
And humans made choices that destroyed lives.
The estate appeared in the distance.
A massive, abandoned building surrounded by overgrown trees.
Daniel Jr. looked through the window.
“I hate this place.””
Clara looked at him.
“You remember?””
He nodded.
“I remember everything.””
Richard parked.
Nobody moved.
Then Daniel Jr. opened the door.
“I’m going inside.””
Richard followed.
“No.””
Daniel Jr. turned.
“You don’t control me anymore.””
“I’m not trying to.””
“Then stay away.””
Ethan stepped between them.
“Stop.””
Both men looked at him.
“We came here for answers.””
Daniel Jr. stared.
“And what if the answers make you hate him?””
Ethan looked at Richard.
“I already know he made mistakes.””
A pause.
“But I need the truth.””
For the first time, Daniel Jr. seemed to respect him.
They entered the estate.
The air smelled like dust and old wood.
Every step echoed.
Richard led them down the hallway.
Then stopped in front of a locked door.
Daniel Jr. looked at him.
“You remember.””
Richard nodded.
“This was the room.””
Clara covered her mouth.
“My son…”
Richard touched the door.
“I heard him crying.””
The words were almost impossible to hear.
Ethan looked at him.
“And you left?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“No.””
He looked at Daniel Jr.
“I stayed.””
Daniel Jr. froze.
“What?””
Richard’s voice shook.
“I stayed outside this door.””
“Then why didn’t you open it?””
“Because Daniel had guards.””
Daniel Jr. stepped closer.
“What?””
Richard nodded.
“I tried.””
A tear moved down his face.
“I tried to get inside.””
The anger on Daniel Jr.’s face weakened.
Only slightly.
Then a sound interrupted them.
A phone ringing.
Everyone looked.
Richard reached into his pocket.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Daniel?””
A voice replied.
Not Daniel Jr.
Not Daniel.
A woman.
“Richard.””
He froze.
Ethan noticed.
“Who is it?””
Richard slowly lowered the phone.
“It’s your mother.””
Silence.
Ethan’s heart stopped.
“My mother is dead.””
The voice came through the speaker.
“No, Ethan.””
Everyone heard it.
“I’m alive.””
Richard’s face turned pale.
The woman continued.
“And your father knows why I disappeared.””
Ethan looked at Richard.
“What is she talking about?””
No answer.
The voice continued.
“I didn’t leave him.””
A pause.
“I was taken.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Because he knew.
He knew this moment would come.
The woman whispered:
“Richard, tell our son the truth.””
Ethan felt the world shift.
“Our son?””
Richard looked at him.
And the fear returned.
The same fear from before.
Because now Ethan understood.

The secret wasn’t only about Michael.
It was about him.
