Chapter 2: The Secret Behind Sophia’s Tears

Ethan stood in the middle of the living room, holding the photograph like it was something dangerous.

The woman he loved was standing ten feet away.

The father who raised him was standing beside him.

And somehow, he no longer knew who had been telling the truth.

“Sophia,” Ethan said softly.

She looked at him.

“Tell me this isn’t what it looks like.””

For a moment, she said nothing.

That silence hurt him more than any confession could have.

Richard watched his son carefully.

“Ethan, I don’t want you to make the same mistake I made.””

Ethan frowned.

“What mistake?””

Richard looked at the floor.

“Trusting someone because you wanted them to be good.””

Sophia’s face hardened.

“You’ve always hated me.””

Richard looked up sharply.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“I wanted to believe you.””

Sophia laughed bitterly.

“You never accepted me.””

“I accepted you when Ethan brought you home,” Richard replied.

“I treated you like family.””

“Then why were you investigating me?””

That question landed heavily.

Ethan looked at his father.

“Is that true?””

Richard didn’t avoid his eyes.

“Yes.””

Ethan stepped back.

“Why?””

Richard opened the folder again.

“Because two weeks ago, I received an anonymous message.””

He pulled out his phone.

On the screen was a text.

*YOUR SON IS IN DANGER. HE DOESN’T KNOW WHO HE MARRIED.*

Ethan stared at it.

“That could be from anyone.””

“Yes,” Richard said.

“That’s why I investigated quietly.””

Sophia shook her head.

“So you secretly followed me?””

“I searched for the truth.””

“No,” Sophia snapped.

“You searched for a reason to destroy my marriage.””

Richard’s expression changed.

A sadness crossed his face.

“Sophia, I saw you withdrawing money from an account Ethan doesn’t know about.””

Ethan looked at his wife.

“What account?””

Sophia opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was enough.

Ethan’s chest tightened.

“Do you have another bank account?””

Sophia looked away.

“Everyone has private things.””

“That’s not an answer.””

Her eyes filled with tears again.

But this time Ethan didn’t immediately move toward her.

And Sophia noticed.

“Wow,” she whispered.

“You’re already believing him.””

Ethan shook his head.

“No. I’m trying to understand why I keep finding things out from everyone except you.””

The words hit her.

For a moment, the confident woman disappeared.

She looked frightened.

Not because she had been accused.

Because she had been exposed.

Richard walked toward the window.

“When I found the account, I discovered payments.””

“To who?”” Ethan asked.

Richard hesitated.

Then he said:

“To your uncle.””

Ethan froze.

“My uncle?””

Richard nodded.

“Daniel.””

The name hung in the air.

Daniel Whitmore.

Ethan’s father’s younger brother.

The man who had attended his wedding.

The man who gave speeches about loyalty and family.

The man who had hugged Sophia and called her “the daughter I never had.””

“No,” Ethan whispered.

Richard reached for another document.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

Sophia suddenly screamed.

“Enough!””

Everyone turned.

Her tears were gone.

Her fear was gone.

Only anger remained.

“You think you’re so perfect, Richard?””

The old man stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you’re not the hero in this story.””

Ethan looked at his wife.

“What are you talking about?””

Sophia stepped closer.

“You never told him, did you?””

Richard’s face changed.

A flicker of worry appeared.

Ethan noticed.

“Told me what?””

Sophia smiled sadly.

A smile that didn’t belong in that room.

“The reason your father hates Daniel.””

Richard’s voice became sharp.

“Sophia, don’t.””

But she continued.

“Because your father destroyed his own brother’s life.””

Ethan looked at Richard.

“Dad?””

Richard didn’t answer.

The silence was terrifying.

Sophia wiped her cheek.

“You want the truth?””

She pointed at Richard.

“Ask him why Daniel spent ten years away from this family.””

Ethan stared at his father.

For the first time that night, he wondered if the truth was bigger than Sophia’s lie.

Richard lowered his eyes.

And quietly said:

“Because I made a choice that ruined someone’s life.””

Ethan’s heart sank.

“What choice?””

Richard looked toward the staircase.

Toward the room where the security camera had recorded everything.

May you like

Then he whispered:

“The choice that created this entire nightmare.””
