Chapter 6: The Son Nobody Knew
The name sat on the paper like a threat.
Daniel Whitmore.
Ethan stared at it.
Then slowly looked at Richard.
“No.””
Richard didn’t move.
“Ethan…”
“No.””
His voice shook.
“You’re telling me my uncle knows something about your child?””
Richard looked broken.
“Yes.””
“And you think he’s hiding him?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer made Ethan angry.
“You don’t know?””
Richard looked at his son.
“Ethan, I have spent thirty years believing my son was dead.””
The pain in his voice stopped Ethan.
Because this wasn’t an argument.
This was a wound.
A wound that had never healed.
Clara stepped closer.
“There’s something Daniel didn’t tell you.””
Everyone looked at her.
She took a breath.
“The child wasn’t only Richard’s.””
Ethan frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Clara looked at Richard.
“He was yours too.””
The room froze.
Richard looked confused.
“Mine?””
Clara nodded.
“He wasn’t your son by blood.””
Ethan’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Clara’s tears fell.
“He was my sister’s child.””
Nobody spoke.
Ethan felt like the ground had disappeared.
“Explain.””
Clara sat down slowly.
“My sister died during childbirth.””
Richard stared at her.
“Clara…”
“She asked me to raise him.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“You told me he was ours.””
“I was afraid.””
Clara looked devastated.
“You loved him immediately.””
A painful silence.
“You looked at him like he was your own.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“And I lost him.””
Clara nodded.
“Because Daniel found out.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Why would Daniel care about a child who wasn’t even his?””
Richard answered quietly.
“Because he knew the child was my weakness.””
The room became silent again.
Ethan understood.
This wasn’t about inheritance.
Not completely.
It was about control.
Daniel had spent decades trying to destroy Richard.
And every move had been connected.
Sophia.
The accusation.
The lies.
The family betrayal.
But one thing still bothered Ethan.
“If Daniel took him…”
He looked at Clara.
“Where is he now?””
Nobody answered.
Then Richard’s phone vibrated.
Everyone looked.
A message.
Unknown number.
Richard opened it.
His face changed instantly.
Ethan stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Richard turned the phone around.
There was a photograph.
A man standing outside a building.
A man around Ethan’s age.
And underneath the picture was one sentence.
*Meet your brother.*
Ethan stared.
The man in the photo had the same dark eyes as Richard.
The same sharp jaw.
The same expression.
It was impossible.
Richard whispered:
“Michael.””
Clara covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
Ethan looked at them.
“You know him?””
Richard nodded slowly.
“I knew him.””
A pause.
“Before he disappeared.””
Ethan looked back at the picture.
“Where?””
Richard’s hands trembled.
“The last place I saw him…”
He swallowed.
“…was Daniel’s house.””
Sophia suddenly spoke.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
Her face was filled with confusion.
“You said Michael disappeared.””
Richard nodded.
“Yes.””
“But Daniel told me he was dead.””
The room went silent.
Ethan looked at her.
“You talked about Michael with Daniel?””
Sophia froze.
She realized too late what she had revealed.
Richard stepped forward.
“When?””
Sophia didn’t answer.
“When did Daniel tell you about Michael?””
Her eyes moved around the room.
Looking for an escape.
There wasn’t one.
Finally, she whispered:
“The night before our wedding.””
Ethan felt numb.
“The night before you married me?””
Sophia cried.
“He wanted me to know what I was getting into.””
Richard stared at her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“He wanted you prepared.””
Sophia looked down.
“For what?””
Richard looked at the photograph again.
“For the moment when Ethan finally discovered the truth.””
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A car door outside.
Everyone turned toward the window.
Headlights moved across the living room wall.
Someone had arrived.
Richard slowly walked toward the curtain.
Then stopped.
Because he recognized the car.
Ethan noticed.
“Who is it?””
Richard didn’t answer.
The front door opened.
A man stepped inside.
Around thirty years old.
Calm.
Confident.
His eyes moved across the room.
First to Richard.
Then Clara.
Then Ethan.
And finally Sophia.
The man smiled faintly.
“I see everyone finally knows.””
Ethan stared at him.
The resemblance was undeniable.
Richard whispered:
“Michael…”
The man looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“My name is Daniel Whitmore Jr.””
And behind him, another figure entered the house.
May you like
The person nobody expected.
The person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.
