Chapter 9: The Truth Everyone Was Hiding
Vanessa stood in the middle of the office like she had walked into a courtroom.
Not the confident woman from the restaurant.
Not the woman wearing a designer gown and a diamond bracelet.
This Vanessa looked exhausted.
Her makeup was lighter.
Her hair was pulled back.
And for the first time since I met her, she looked human.
“I know what you’re thinking,” she said.
I stared at her.
“Do you?””
She swallowed.
“You think I knew everything.””
I didn’t answer.
Because I wasn’t sure what I thought anymore.
The last twenty-four hours had destroyed every assumption I had about the people around me.
Mark.
Michael.
My father.
And now Vanessa.
She stepped closer.
“I know I don’t deserve your trust.””
A bitter smile crossed my face.
“That’s the first honest thing you’ve said to me.””
She accepted the words.
“I deserve that.””
Michael looked uncomfortable.
“Why are you here?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because it’s time someone told Emma the entire truth.””
Daniel crossed his arms.
“And why should we believe you?””
Vanessa looked down.
“You shouldn’t.””
The answer surprised everyone.
She continued.
“But you should listen.””
I studied her carefully.
“Start from the beginning.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Three years ago, I didn’t know Mark.””
I frowned.
“Then how did you meet?””
“Through Victor.””
The room became silent.
I felt the same cold feeling return.
“Victor introduced you?””
“Yes.””
Michael shook his head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because I wasn’t supposed to be Mark’s girlfriend at first.””
I stared.
“What?””
She took a breath.
“I was supposed to be someone he trusted.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Explain.””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“Victor wanted information.””
“About what?””
She looked at me.
“About you.””
The answer hurt even though I expected it.
“Why me?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because you were the person Mark couldn’t control.””
The words stayed with me.
I thought about all the moments Mark tried to make me smaller.
The comments about my clothes.
My lifestyle.
My choices.
Maybe I had mistaken arrogance for confidence.
Maybe it was fear.
Fear that I would realize my own power.
Vanessa continued.
“Victor knew Mark needed someone close to you.””
“Why?””
“Because you were careful with business.””
She looked at the documents on the table.
“You never trusted strangers.””
I almost smiled.
“Apparently, I trusted the wrong people.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
The honesty made it harder to hate her.
She continued.
“Mark was supposed to marry you.””
My chest tightened.
“But then why did he leave?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because Victor changed the plan.””
“What plan?””
She took a breath.
“The original plan was for Mark to keep you emotionally attached while gaining control of the company.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“And after that?””
“After that, he was supposed to slowly remove you.””
The words were quiet.
But they hit like a scream.
“Remove me?””
Vanessa nodded.
“From the company. From decision-making. From everything.””
Michael looked sick.
“I knew about the contract.””
He looked at me.
“But I didn’t know it went that far.””
I looked at him.
“You never knew enough.””
He lowered his head.
That was true.
Nobody knew enough.
Everyone knew pieces.
Nobody cared enough to put them together.
I looked back at Vanessa.
“Then why did Mark choose you?””
Her expression changed.
Because that question clearly hurt.
“He didn’t.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He chose the image.””
She looked down.
“Victor told him that being with me would make him look more powerful.””
A silence followed.
“More successful.””
She gave a small, sad laugh.
“He wanted the world to see that he had moved up.””
The words were painful.
Because I remembered that night.
Mark’s exact words.
I traded up.
Not moved on.
Not changed.
Traded up.
Like I was something he replaced.
Vanessa looked at me.
“I hated him for that.””
I raised an eyebrow.
“You hated him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why stay?””
She looked away.
“Because I was afraid.””
The room became quiet.
“Of Victor?””
She nodded.
“He controls people through fear.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What does he have on you?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“My family’s company.””
I watched her carefully.
“Victor owns part of it.””
“Yes.””
“And he threatened you?””
She nodded.
“He said if I didn’t follow his instructions, he would destroy everything my family built.””
For the first time, I understood.
Everyone around Mark had been trapped.
Not because they were innocent.
But because they were afraid.
And fear made people do terrible things.
“Why leave him now?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because last night changed everything.””
“What changed?””
“When Mark realized you could challenge him legally, he called Victor.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What did Victor say?””
Vanessa’s face became serious.
“He told Mark there was only one way to win.””
My stomach tightened.
“What way?””
She looked directly at me.
“Destroy your reputation before you can reveal the truth.””
Daniel immediately understood.
“That’s why the press conference.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Victor gave him everything.””
“The documents?””
“The edited documents.””
The room went silent.
“Edited?””
Vanessa nodded.
“They removed anything that showed your original ownership rights.””
Daniel immediately grabbed the files.
“This explains why the documents looked incomplete.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why tell me now?””
She looked at me for a long moment.
“Because I saw him laugh at you.””
Her voice softened.
“And I realized I was helping someone destroy the only person who actually cared about him.””
I looked away.
I didn’t want sympathy from her.
I didn’t want an apology.
I wanted the truth.
And finally, I was getting it.
Daniel suddenly looked up from the documents.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
He pointed at one page.
“This signature.””
I stepped closer.
“What about it?””
He looked at me.
“This is not Mark’s signature.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel turned the document toward us.
“The transfer agreement was approved using a second signature.””
Michael leaned closer.
“Whose?””
Daniel looked at the page.
“Richard Carter.””
My father.
I froze.
“No.””
Vanessa whispered:
“That’s what I was trying to tell you.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She swallowed.
“Your father wasn’t just investigating Mark.””
My heart raced.
“He was working with Victor.””
The room went silent.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa looked at me sadly.
“I wish it was.””
Daniel examined the document.
“Emma…”
I didn’t want to hear it.
But I needed to.
“Say it.””
He looked at me.
“The signature appears genuine.””
The words broke something inside me.
My father.
The man who said he was protecting me.
The man who prepared documents to save me.
Was also part of the deal?
I stepped back.
“No.””
Michael looked devastated.
“I didn’t know.””
I laughed quietly.
“Of course you didn’t.””
Everyone kept saying that.
Nobody knew.
Nobody understood.
Nobody was responsible.
Except me.
I was the only person who had never been allowed to know anything.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*Meet me alone if you want the real truth about your father.*
Below it was an address.
Daniel immediately saw my face.
“What happened?””
I showed him.
His expression changed.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“You can’t go alone.””
I looked at the message again.
The truth.
The one thing I had been searching for.
Maybe it was another trap.
Maybe it was another lie.
But after everything, I had learned one thing.
Secrets had power only when they stayed hidden.
I picked up my coat.
“I’m going.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Emma.””
I looked at him.
“If my father betrayed me…”
I paused.
“If Mark betrayed me…”
I looked at Michael.
“If everyone around me was hiding something…”
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“I need to know why.””
Nobody stopped me.
Because they knew.
This time, I wasn’t chasing revenge.
I was chasing the one thing everyone had taken from me.
The truth.
Two hours later, I arrived at the address.
An abandoned office building on the edge of the city.
I stepped inside.
The lights flickered.
The hallway was empty.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Someone walked out of the shadows.
And when I saw the person standing there…
I forgot every word I planned to say.
Because the person who had called me wasn’t Victor.
It wasn’t Mark.
It wasn’t my father.
It was someone who was supposed to be gone forever.
Someone I had mourned years ago.
Someone who knew the secret behind everything.
My mother.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Emma.””
I couldn’t move.
Because my entire life had been built around one truth.
My mother died when I was young.
But now she was standing in front of me.
Alive.
May you like
And the first thing she said was:
“I’m sorry I let them make you believe I was gone.””
