Amused

Chapter 5: The Secret Behind The Engagement

Mark’s fingers were wrapped around the envelope like it was the last thing keeping him standing.

That alone told me everything.

People don’t fight to hide things that don’t matter.

They fight to hide the things that can destroy them.

“Give it back.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

Mark looked at me.

“Emma, listen to me.””

“No.””

His eyes moved around the restaurant.

People were still watching.

The same strangers who had witnessed his cruelty earlier were now watching him desperately hold onto a piece of paper.

A piece of paper that clearly terrified him.

“Not here,” he said quietly.

I almost smiled.

“You didn’t care about ‘not here’ when you were laughing at me.””

His jaw tightened.

“That was different.””

“How?””

He didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mr. Hayes, the document belongs to Ms. Carter.””

Mark looked at him.

“You don’t understand what this is.””

Daniel’s expression remained professional.

“Then explain.””

Silence.

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Mark.””

Mark turned toward him.

“You’re the reason we’re here.””

Michael flinched.

The accusation landed.

I noticed.

And suddenly I understood something.

Michael wasn’t just guilty.

He was afraid of Mark.

That realization bothered me.

Because Michael had always been the strongest person I knew.

He was the one who challenged executives twice his age.

The one who stood up during negotiations when everyone else stayed quiet.

But now?

He looked like someone trapped.

“Michael,” I said.

He looked at me.

“What’s in that envelope?””

His face fell.

“I…”

Mark interrupted.

“Don’t.””

I turned toward him.

“Why are you afraid of me knowing?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I reached forward.

“Give it to me.””

For a moment, I thought he would refuse.

Then something changed.

Maybe he realized he couldn’t stop me forever.

Maybe he realized everyone was watching.

Slowly, he handed me the envelope.

My fingers touched it.

And I felt something strange.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

Because part of me still hoped there was an explanation.

A misunderstanding.

A reason.

A version of events where Mark wasn’t the person I believed he was.

But deep down, I already knew.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a contract.

The date immediately caught my attention.

Three years ago.

One day before our engagement party.

My eyes moved down the page.

And then I saw it.

The signature.

Mark Hayes.

My name.

Emma Carter.

But something was wrong.

I never signed this.

I looked at Michael.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Daniel.

He took the document carefully.

His eyes scanned the page.

Then his expression changed.

“This is not a simple ownership agreement.””

“What is it?””

He looked at Mark.

“It’s a personal transfer agreement.””

My stomach tightened.

“Personal?””

Daniel nodded.

“This agreement states that if the relationship between Emma Carter and Mark Hayes ends before marriage, all private investments connected to Hayes Innovations will be converted into company assets controlled by Mr. Hayes.””

The world went silent.

I stared.

“No.””

Mark looked away.

Daniel continued.

“It also states that Ms. Carter acknowledges she has no personal claim to those assets after separation.””

My hands went cold.

I looked at Mark.

“You created this?””

He didn’t answer.

“You created a contract that protected you from me?””

His voice was low.

“It wasn’t like that.””

I laughed.

A quiet, broken laugh.

“Then what was it like?””

He looked at me.

“I was trying to protect the company.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

His silence confirmed it.

Michael finally spoke.

“Emma…”

I turned toward him.

“You knew.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than I expected.

“How long?””

He swallowed.

“Since the beginning.””

The restaurant felt colder.

“You knew?””

Michael nodded.

“You knew he was planning this?””

“I knew about the agreement.””

“And you said nothing?””

His voice broke.

“I thought he would never use it against you.””

I stared at him.

“You thought?””

I looked around.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I pointed at Mark.

“He thought he wouldn’t hurt me.””

I pointed at Michael.

“He thought Mark would do the right thing.””

I looked down at the contract.

“But nobody asked me.””

Mark stepped closer.

“Emma, you’re misunderstanding.””

I looked up.

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

His voice became desperate.

“I loved you.””

The words almost made me laugh.

“Love doesn’t need secret contracts.””

He said nothing.

“Love doesn’t prepare for your partner to fail.””

His face tightened.

“Things were complicated.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Things were simple.””

I held up the contract.

“You wanted my money.””

Mark looked hurt.

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did you hide this?””

Silence.

“Why did you sign something that took away everything I built?””

Still silence.

“Why did you wait until after my investment saved you?””

His face changed.

And I knew.

I had found the answer.

Mark looked away.

The man who once promised me forever couldn’t even look at me.

Vanessa slowly approached.

I had forgotten she was still nearby.

She looked at Mark differently now.

Not with admiration.

With confusion.

“So…”

Her voice was quiet.

“All of this time…”

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked at Mark.

“You weren’t the one who built everything?””

Mark immediately became defensive.

“Vanessa, this doesn’t involve you.””

She laughed softly.

“No?””

She pointed at the bracelet on the table.

“The apartment you bought.””

She pointed outside.

“The lifestyle you showed me.””

Her eyes moved to Emma.

“Everything came from her?””

Mark’s expression darkened.

“Stop.””

But Vanessa didn’t.

“You told me your ex couldn’t keep up with your ambition.””

She shook her head.

“You made her sound like someone who held you back.””

I looked at Mark.

His face was changing.

“You lied to me too.””

That sentence hit him harder than anything I had said.

Because he cared about Vanessa’s opinion.

He cared about how people saw him.

He could survive losing me.

But losing his perfect image?

That was different.

Vanessa removed the diamond bracelet completely.

“You know what’s funny?””

Nobody spoke.

She placed it beside the documents.

“I thought I was getting the man who built an empire.””

She looked at Mark.

“But I was just dating the man who took credit for someone else’s.””

Mark’s face turned red.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“I think she does.””

Then Vanessa walked away.

This time, Mark didn’t call her back.

He just stood there.

Alone.

For the first time.

Daniel gathered the documents.

“Ms. Carter, we need to leave.””

I nodded.

But before I moved, I looked at Mark one last time.

Three years.

Three years of memories.

Three years of believing I was building a future with someone.

And now I realized I had been building a future for someone who was quietly preparing for my disappearance.

“Emma.””

I stopped.

Mark’s voice sounded different.

Not confident.

Not arrogant.

Just tired.

“I did love you.””

I didn’t turn around.

“Maybe.””

A pause.

“But you loved what I could give you more.””

The silence afterward was heavy.

I walked toward the exit.

But before I reached the door, Michael spoke.

“Emma.””

I stopped.

His voice was shaking.

“There’s one more thing.””

I slowly turned.

He looked terrified.

“What?””

He glanced at Mark.

Then at me.

“The contract you just saw…”

He swallowed.

“It wasn’t Mark’s idea.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

Michael took a breath.

“Someone else created it.””

The room went still.

Mark immediately looked at him.

“Michael.””

But Michael continued.

“I was told to prepare it.””

“By who?””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael looked directly at me.

And said the name I never expected.

“The person who ordered that contract was someone in your own family.””

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly, this wasn’t only about Mark.

Someone closer had been watching.

May you like

Someone closer had been planning.

And they had been hiding the truth from me long before Mark ever did.
