Amused

Chapter 4: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming

I forgot how to breathe.

For a few seconds, the entire restaurant disappeared.

The voices.

The music.

The movement of people around us.

Everything faded until there was only one person standing in front of me.

Michael.

My former business partner.

My closest friend.

The man who had been beside me long before Mark ever entered my life.

He looked older than I remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

There was something different in his eyes.

Something I couldn’t recognize.

Regret.

Or maybe guilt.

“Hello, Emma.””

I stared at him.

My hand tightened around the folder Daniel had given me.

“You.””

Michael looked down briefly.

“Yes.””

Mark smiled beside him.

A smile filled with satisfaction.

The same smile he had worn when he thought he had won.

“I told you,” Mark said quietly.

“You never knew the whole story.””

I ignored him.

My eyes stayed on Michael.

“Why are you here?””

Michael swallowed.

“I think we need to talk.””

I almost laughed.

Talk.

That was such a simple word.

As if three years of secrets could be fixed by a conversation.

As if betrayal could be explained over coffee.

“You knew,” I whispered.

His face changed.

“Emma…”

“You knew about tonight.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I already had my answer.

Mark stepped forward.

“She’s finally understanding.””

Daniel immediately moved between us.

“Mr. Hayes, I suggest you choose your words carefully.””

Mark smiled.

“Why?””

He glanced at me.

“She’s the one who wanted the truth.””

I looked at Michael.

“Tell me.””

Silence.

“Tell me what happened.””

Michael looked around the restaurant.

“This isn’t the right place.””

“No.””

My voice was sharper than I expected.

“It’s exactly the right place.””

I looked at the guests watching us.

“Because Mark chose this place to humiliate me.””

I turned back to Michael.

“So now he gets to watch the truth come out here too.””

Mark’s expression darkened.

Michael closed his eyes briefly.

Then he pulled out a chair.

“Can we sit?””

“No.””

I stayed standing.

Michael sighed.

“Three years ago, when Hayes Innovations was struggling, your investment saved the company.””

“I know.””

“But you don’t know what happened after.””

I said nothing.

He continued.

“Your money gave us time.””

His voice became quieter.

“But time wasn’t enough.””

Mark crossed his arms.

“Tell her.””

Michael glanced at him.

There was hesitation.

A small detail.

But I noticed.

“Tell her everything,” Mark repeated.

Michael looked back at me.

“After your investment, we needed major contracts to survive.””

“Yes.””

“Mark found investors.””

I frowned.

“Investors?””

Michael nodded.

“People who could connect the company with bigger opportunities.””

I looked at Mark.

“You told me you found those contracts yourself.””

Mark shrugged.

“I simplified things.””

The way he said it made my stomach turn.

Simplified.

That was what people called lies when they didn’t want to admit what they were.

Michael continued.

“The problem was those investors wanted something in return.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Control.””

The word landed heavily.

Daniel immediately looked at him.

“Control over what?””

Michael looked at me.

“The company.””

My heart sank.

“No.””

Mark smiled slightly.

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible. My investment agreement protected ownership.””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Your original agreement did.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

He reached into his briefcase.

And pulled out a document.

Not a copy.

Not a digital file.

The original.

I recognized the company logo immediately.

My company.

My work.

My signature.

But something was wrong.

Michael placed it on the table.

“This was signed six months after your investment.””

I picked it up.

My eyes moved across the pages.

Then stopped.

My entire body went cold.

“No.””

Daniel immediately stepped closer.

“Emma?””

I handed him the document.

He read silently.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He looked at me carefully.

“Ms. Carter…”

“Tell me.””

Daniel hesitated.

“This agreement transferred voting rights.””

My fingers went numb.

“To who?””

Daniel looked at Mark.

“To Mr. Hayes.””

The restaurant became silent.

I stared at Mark.

“You did this?””

Mark looked uncomfortable.

Only for a moment.

Then his expression hardened.

“I did what I had to do.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You took control of the company I saved?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“You gave me the opportunity.””

The words were almost worse.

“You’re saying I gave you everything?””

“I’m saying you believed in me.””

He leaned closer.

“You wanted me to succeed.””

“Yes.””

“And I did.””

His voice became colder.

“That’s what matters.””

I looked at him.

The man I had loved.

The man I had defended.

The man I had sacrificed for.

“You really believe success excuses everything?””

He didn’t answer.

Because maybe he did.

Michael looked down.

“I should have told you.””

I turned toward him.

“Yes.””

His eyes met mine.

“I should have.””

“Why didn’t you?””

Pain crossed his face.

“I was afraid.””

I stared.

“Afraid of what?””

“Losing everything.””

I laughed softly.

“You mean losing the company?””

He didn’t respond.

“You were afraid of losing money.””

Michael looked away.

And that hurt more than Mark’s betrayal.

Because Mark had changed.

But Michael…

Michael was supposed to know better.

“You were my friend.””

His voice broke slightly.

“I know.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t.””

The restaurant lights reflected in my eyes.

“I could understand a stranger betraying me.””

I looked at him.

“But not you.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost believed him.

Almost.

Until Mark spoke.

“Don’t pretend you’re the victim here.””

I turned.

He continued.

“You’re acting like you’re innocent.””

My eyebrows lifted.

“What?””

“You hid your identity from me.””

The accusation shocked me.

“You’re comparing that to stealing control of a company?””

“You manipulated me.””

I stared at him.

“I wanted to know if you loved me.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You wanted to test me.””

“And you failed.””

He laughed.

“Maybe because the whole relationship was built on a lie.””

The words hurt.

Not because they were true.

Because they were exactly what he wanted me to believe.

I stepped closer.

“My identity was hidden.””

I pointed toward him.

“Your betrayal was hidden.””

A silence followed.

“You chose to hurt me.””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw uncertainty.

Because deep down, he knew the difference.

Michael looked at the documents.

“There’s more.””

Everyone turned.

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked nervous.

“There was another agreement.””

Daniel frowned.

“Another?””

Michael nodded.

“The voting rights transfer wasn’t the final document.””

A cold feeling returned.

“What was the final document?””

Michael looked at Mark.

Mark’s face changed instantly.

“Don’t.””

Michael froze.

I noticed.

“What is it?””

Nobody answered.

I stepped toward Michael.

“What was the final document?””

He looked at me.

Then slowly said:

“The document that changed everything was signed the day before your engagement party.””

My heart stopped.

My engagement party.

The day Mark proposed.

The happiest day of my life.

The day I thought proved he loved me.

Michael opened his briefcase again.

And pulled out a sealed envelope.

“Emma…”

His voice was barely above a whisper.

“You need to see this.””

I reached for it.

But before my fingers touched the envelope, Mark suddenly grabbed it.

“Enough.””

The movement shocked everyone.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Give that back.””

Mark held the envelope tightly.

His face was no longer confident.

He looked desperate.

“Emma, you don’t want to open this.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His silence was the answer.

I looked at the envelope.

Then at him.

“What did you do?””

Mark’s grip tightened.

And for the first time that night…

The man who had laughed at me looked terrified.

Because whatever was inside that envelope wasn’t just a business secret.

It was something he had spent three years making sure I would never discover.

May you like

And when I finally opened it…

I would learn the real reason he chose Vanessa over me.
