Chapter 3: The Enemy Behind The Success
The smile on Mark’s face bothered me more than his insults ever had.
Because I knew that smile.
It was the same expression he wore whenever he believed he had found a way out.
For the past hour, I had watched him lose control of everything he thought defined him.
His reputation.
His relationship.
His power.
But now, standing in the doorway of the restaurant, he looked different.
Calm.
Almost confident.
And that meant one thing.
He thought he had found something.
Daniel ended the phone call slowly.
“Who submitted the evidence?”” I asked.
He looked uncomfortable.
“I’m still confirming the details.””
Mark crossed his arms.
“Maybe you should explain everything before you start accusing people.””
I turned toward him.
“Accusing?””
He shrugged.
“You came here tonight with lawyers and documents.””
His voice became smoother.
“You embarrassed me in front of everyone.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“You think I embarrassed you?””
He looked around the restaurant.
“Everyone here thinks I’m some kind of fraud.””
I stared at him.
“No, Mark.””
I pointed toward the table where he had laughed at me earlier.
“Everyone here saw exactly who you were.””
His jaw tightened.
For a moment, the old anger appeared.
Then he controlled it.
That was something Mark had always been good at.
Changing his face.
Changing his voice.
Becoming whoever he needed to be.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mr. Hayes, this isn’t the time for arguments.””
Mark ignored him.
“Emma, maybe you should ask yourself something.””
I raised an eyebrow.
“What?””
“If you were so powerful, why did you hide behind me?””
The question was designed to hurt.
And years ago, it would have.
But now I understood something.
People like Mark didn’t attack your weaknesses.
They attacked the things they secretly envied.
“I didn’t hide behind you,” I said.
“No?””
He laughed softly.
“Then why didn’t you tell everyone you were the real investor?””
“Because it wasn’t about everyone.””
His expression changed.
“What does that mean?””
“It was about you.””
The silence returned.
I continued.
“I didn’t need strangers to know my name.””
I looked at him.
“I needed the person I loved to know my heart.””
For a second, Mark looked away.
Then his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen.
The confidence disappeared.
Only for a moment.
But I noticed.
“Who is it?”” Vanessa asked from near the entrance.
I hadn’t realized she was still there.
She stood beside the doorway, watching.
Mark ignored her and answered.
“Hello?””
A few seconds passed.
His face became serious.
“What?””
He walked away from the table.
Everyone watched him.
Daniel leaned toward me.
“That’s probably connected to the evidence.””
I nodded.
“What do you know?””
He lowered his voice.
“Not enough yet.””
I hated those words.
Not enough.
After three years of planning, after finally revealing the truth, there was suddenly another person moving pieces behind the scenes.
I looked toward Mark.
He had turned away from us, but his body language told me everything.
Whoever was speaking had his full attention.
Then he suddenly said:
“No. Absolutely not.””
A pause.
“You promised me.””
My eyes narrowed.
Promised?
Daniel heard it too.
When Mark ended the call, he returned slowly.
His confidence was gone.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
Then at Daniel.
“Nothing.””
I almost laughed.
“Nothing?””
“Yes.””
“Your face says something different.””
He stepped closer.
“You should leave.””
I blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
The arrogance was back.
But weaker.
“You got your moment. You proved your point.””
I studied him.
“You’re afraid.””
His eyes hardened.
“I’m not afraid.””
“You are.””
I looked at the documents.
“Because whatever was submitted isn’t about me.””
His silence confirmed it.
Daniel immediately noticed.
“Mr. Hayes, what exactly was submitted?””
Mark looked at him.
“That’s none of your business.””
“It becomes my business when it affects my client.””
Mark laughed.
“Your client?””
He looked at me.
“She’s not as untouchable as you think.””
I felt a strange chill.
Not because I believed him.
Because I realized he was scared.
And scared people reveal things.
“Who is behind this?”” I asked.
Mark didn’t answer.
“Who?”” I repeated.
He looked at me.
For a moment, I thought he would tell me.
Then he smiled.
“You really don’t know.””
The words made my stomach tighten.
“What don’t I know?””
He stepped closer.
“You think you were the only person helping me?””
I stared at him.
“What?””
Mark glanced at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Your investment saved the company.””
He paused.
“But it wasn’t the only reason it survived.””
My mind raced.
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
He smiled slightly.
“You were so focused on watching whether I loved you that you never looked closely enough at the company.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because there was one thing I hated admitting.
I had trusted him.
Completely.
I believed my understanding of the company was complete because I had built it with him.
But what if something had happened behind my back?
Daniel immediately opened his tablet.
“I need access to the original corporate records.””
“I have them,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Not all of them.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
“Your investment agreement controlled the ownership structure.””
“Yes.””
“But if another agreement existed afterward, one that modified the structure…”
He didn’t finish.
He didn’t need to.
Mark watched my reaction.
And for the first time, I saw something dangerous in his eyes.
Not regret.
Not guilt.
Relief.
Because he thought he finally had a weapon against me.
“You never asked why I became successful so quickly,” he said.
I frowned.
“What?””
“Three years ago, after your investment, we suddenly got major contracts.””
“Yes.””
“You thought it was because of your money.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What are you saying?””
Mark smiled.
“Someone else opened those doors.””
Daniel looked up sharply.
“Who?””
Mark hesitated.
Then said:
“My business partner.””
I stared at him.
“You never had a business partner.””
His smile faded.
“That’s what you believed.””
The room felt smaller.
Three years.
I had spent three years believing I knew everything.
Believing I understood every decision.
Every contract.
Every investor.
Every meeting.
But suddenly, there was a missing piece.
And Mark knew exactly what it was.
“Who is your partner?”” I asked.
He looked toward the restaurant entrance.
And my blood went cold.
Because someone was standing there.
Someone I knew.
Someone I never expected to see.
The man removed his coat and walked toward us.
Mark smiled.
“Emma, meet the person who really helped me build Hayes Innovations.””
I stared at the approaching figure.
My mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
“Hello, Emma.””
The voice was familiar.
Too familiar.
The man stopped beside Mark.
And then he said the words that changed everything.
“I think it’s time you knew the truth about the money you invested.””
My fingers tightened around the folder.
Because the man standing in front of me wasn’t a stranger.
He was someone who had been in my life long before Mark.
Someone I had trusted.
Someone who knew exactly how much I had sacrificed.
Daniel looked at me.
“Ms. Carter…”
I couldn’t answer.
Because the secret hidden inside Hayes Innovations wasn’t just about Mark.
May you like
It was about me.
And the person who had betrayed me had been standing in my shadow the entire time.
