Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth They Tried To Bury

The next morning, the world woke up believing a lie.

I knew because my name was everywhere.

Not attached to my achievements.

Not connected to the years I spent building companies, negotiating deals, and saving businesses that were seconds away from collapse.

No.

My name was attached to a story someone else had written.

A story where I was the villain.

I sat in Daniel’s office watching the news coverage play silently on the large screen.

A reporter stood outside the Hayes Innovations headquarters.

“Sources close to the company claim that former investor Emma Carter attempted to secretly control the business while maintaining the public image of an employee.””

I stared at the screen.

Secretly control.

The words were carefully chosen.

Designed to create anger.

Designed to make strangers believe they understood a situation they knew nothing about.

Michael stood behind me.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t look away.

“You keep saying that.””

He lowered his head.

“Because I keep deserving to.””

For once, I didn’t argue.

Because Michael was right.

But there was something else I had learned.

Apologies didn’t change history.

Actions did.

Daniel walked into the room holding a tablet.

“The press conference starts in twenty minutes.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

He placed the tablet on the desk.

“We can release your documents first.””

“No.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

I looked at the screen.

At Mark’s face appearing beside the company logo.

“He wants a public fight.””

“Yes.””

“Then he gets one.””

Michael looked surprised.

“What are you saying?””

I stood.

“I’m saying I’m done defending myself quietly.””

For years, I had avoided attention.

I believed the strongest position was the one nobody knew about.

But I had misunderstood something.

Silence only protected the truth if the people around you respected it.

When they didn’t, silence became a weapon against you.

Daniel nodded.

“Then we need to prepare your statement.””

“No.””

He paused.

“No?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t want a statement.””

“Emma—”

“I want the truth.””

The room became quiet.

“Not a speech.””

I looked at Michael.

“Not an attack.””

Then I looked at Daniel.

“Everything.””

Twenty minutes later, Mark appeared on every major business channel.

He stood behind a podium.

Perfect suit.

Perfect hair.

Perfect expression.

The same man who had laughed at me in that restaurant now looked like the victim of some terrible injustice.

“Three years ago,” Mark began, “I accepted an investment from someone I trusted.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

Someone I trusted.

He was already rewriting history.

“I believed we were building something together.””

He paused dramatically.

“But over time, I discovered that the person who claimed to support me was actually trying to control everything I created.””

Michael whispered:

“He’s using the contract.””

I nodded.

Mark continued.

“I remained silent because I wanted to protect the company and the people who depended on it.””

The irony was almost painful.

Protect.

That word followed him everywhere.

Protect the company.

Protect the investors.

Protect the image.

Never protect the person standing beside him.

A reporter raised a hand.

“Mr. Hayes, are you referring to Emma Carter?””

Mark looked directly into the camera.

“Yes.””

My name.

Spoken like an accusation.

“She invested in my company, but she never told me the full extent of her control.””

Daniel watched my reaction.

“He’s trying to make your secrecy equal to his deception.””

I nodded.

“That’s exactly what he’s doing.””

Mark continued.

“I respected Emma for years. But when someone hides their true identity from you, you have to question their motives.””

Michael looked angry.

“He’s unbelievable.””

I watched silently.

Because anger wasn’t what I needed.

Not anymore.

I needed evidence.

Then Mark said something that made me sit up.

“Thankfully, the company’s legal documents will prove the truth.””

Daniel immediately paused the video.

“Wait.””

He rewound.

“Play that again.””

We listened.

“The company’s legal documents will prove the truth.””

Daniel looked at me.

“That means he believes the documents are on his side.””

I frowned.

“But they aren’t.””

“Unless…”

He stopped.

I knew what he was thinking.

“Unless Victor gave him something.””

Michael became pale.

“There’s another possibility.””

We looked at him.

Michael slowly spoke.

“The original records.””

“What about them?””

“The company’s original records were stored before the restructuring.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Michael continued.

“But after the restructuring, they were moved.””

“Where?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“Victor’s private archive.””

My stomach tightened.

“So Mark has access to records that we don’t.””

“Yes.””

Daniel immediately grabbed his phone.

“I’ll contact the archive department.””

“No.””

Everyone stopped.

I looked at Michael.

“You said Victor kept records.””

“Yes.””

“Then he wanted someone to find them.””

Michael looked confused.

“What?””

I stood.

“Think about it.””

Daniel watched me carefully.

“Go on.””

“Victor is not careless.””

I looked at the paused image of Mark.

“People like him don’t leave evidence behind by accident.””

Michael frowned.

“You think he wants us to find something?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I stared at the screen.

“Because he’s confident we won’t understand what it means.””

The room went quiet.

I knew that kind of confidence.

It wasn’t the confidence of someone hiding a secret.

It was the confidence of someone who believed they had already won.

Daniel received a message.

He read it.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“We found the archive.””

“Where?””

“It was delivered this morning.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Delivered?””

“Yes.””

“By who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

“Mark Hayes.””

Nobody spoke.

Michael stood.

“That makes no sense.””

I looked at the folder Daniel had received.

“Open it.””

He did.

Inside were dozens of documents.

Contracts.

Emails.

Financial records.

And one handwritten letter.

The handwriting stopped me immediately.

I knew it.

My father’s.

I picked it up.

The letter was dated three years ago.

Before everything collapsed.

Before Mark changed.

Before I discovered the truth.

I read the first line.

*Emma, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.*

My chest tightened.

I kept reading.

*I wanted to believe I was wrong about Mark. I wanted to believe that love could change ambition. But I saw what you refused to see.*

I swallowed.

The next sentence made my heart stop.

*Mark was never the person Victor wanted to control.*

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

I kept reading.

*The person Victor wanted was you.*

The room felt colder.

The letter continued.

*Your intelligence, your reputation, and your ability to build companies make you more valuable than any single business asset. Victor doesn’t want Hayes Innovations.*

My hands trembled.

*He wants access to everything you can create.*

I lowered the letter.

Michael whispered:

“He wasn’t after the company.””

I looked at him.

“He was after me.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“And Mark was the way in.””

The pieces finally connected.

Mark wasn’t the mastermind.

He was the face.

The public story.

The person everyone could blame.

But behind him was someone much more dangerous.

Someone who had been studying me.

Someone who knew exactly where my weaknesses were.

Then I noticed something at the bottom of the letter.

A final line.

Written separately.

Almost like my father added it later.

*Emma, there is one thing I never told you.*

My heartbeat increased.

I continued reading.

*Mark did not leave you because of Vanessa.*

I froze.

The room disappeared.

Because that was the question I had carried for months.

Why?

Why her?

Why after everything?

The letter continued.

*Vanessa was never the reason. She was part of the plan.*

I looked up.

Daniel and Michael were watching me.

I read the final sentence.

And this time, my hands truly began to shake.

*The woman you thought stole your fiancé was actually the person who tried to warn him about Victor.*

I stared at the page.

No.

That couldn’t be right.

Vanessa?

The woman who laughed at me?

The woman who stood beside Mark?

The woman who looked like she had everything I lost?

Michael whispered:

“Emma…”

I looked at him.

“Then why did she pretend?””

Before anyone could answer, the office door opened.

A woman stood there.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

Vanessa.

She looked at me.

And the first words she said changed everything.

“I know you hate me.””

I didn’t move.

“But I need you to listen.””

She stepped inside.

“Because Mark was never the only person who betrayed you.””

She closed the door behind her.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your father lied too.””
