Amused

Chapter 6: The Family Secret That Changed Everything

For three years, I believed Mark was the person who betrayed me.

I was wrong.

Because betrayal had started long before him.

The restaurant doors had barely closed behind us when Michael’s words continued echoing in my mind.

“The person who ordered that contract was someone in your own family.””

I stood outside beneath the cold city lights, unable to move.

Cars passed on the street.

People walked by, laughing, talking, living ordinary lives.

But my world had stopped.

Daniel stood beside me, holding the documents.

“Emma.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

He understood the question immediately.

“Are you sure you want to know right now?””

I stared at him.

“Yes.””

Because after tonight, I couldn’t handle another hidden truth waiting for me.

I had spent years believing I knew my own story.

Now I realized I had only known the version people wanted me to see.

Daniel turned back toward the restaurant.

“Michael needs to explain everything.””

I looked through the glass doors.

Inside, Mark was still standing near the table.

Alone.

Vanessa was gone.

The guests had returned to their meals.

The scene looked almost normal.

But I knew better.

Nothing was normal anymore.

I walked back inside.

Michael was waiting.

Mark looked at me immediately.

The fear in his eyes returned.

“What are you doing?””

I ignored him.

I looked at Michael.

“Tell me.””

Michael lowered his head.

“I’m sorry.””

I hated those words.

Not because they were meaningless.

Because everyone who hurt you always said them after the damage was done.

“I don’t need an apology.””

My voice was quiet.

“I need the truth.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“Three years ago, before Mark and I finalized the company restructuring, someone contacted me.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then answered.

“Your father.””

The words hit me harder than I expected.

My father.

I hadn’t heard his name in connection with my business in years.

My father, Richard Carter, was a respected businessman.

A man who built his reputation on discipline, control, and never making emotional decisions.

He was also the person who taught me one important lesson:

Never trust anyone with your future.

The irony almost made me laugh.

Because I had ignored his advice for the one person I loved.

“Why would my father do that?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“Because he didn’t trust Mark.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Michael looked at me.

“He saw things you didn’t.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What things?””

He stayed silent.

“Michael.””

He finally spoke.

“He saw how Mark changed after the investment.””

I looked down.

“He saw Mark becoming obsessed with status.””

“That’s not enough to create a contract stealing control.””

“No.””

Michael shook his head.

“There was more.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“What more?””

Michael looked at both of us.

“Your father believed Mark was planning something.””

My stomach tightened.

“Planning what?””

Michael looked toward the empty chair where Mark had been sitting.

“Leaving you.””

The words were simple.

But they hurt.

Because some part of me already knew.

Michael continued.

“He thought Mark would stay with you until the company became successful enough.””

“And then?””

“Then he would find someone who matched the image he wanted.””

I closed my eyes.

Because that was exactly what happened.

The expensive restaurants.

The luxury events.

The people Mark suddenly wanted around him.

And then Vanessa.

A woman who represented everything he thought success looked like.

“But why didn’t my father tell me?””

Michael looked away.

“That’s the part I don’t know.””

I believed him.

Because for the first time tonight, Michael looked genuinely broken.

Not afraid.

Not defensive.

Broken.

I looked at him.

“You helped create the contract.””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

“You helped someone take away my rights.””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

I nodded slowly.

“Why?””

Michael’s eyes filled.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I stared.

“By lying?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“By making sure Mark couldn’t destroy everything you built.””

I didn’t understand.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael reached into his briefcase again.

This time, he pulled out a different folder.

“This.””

He placed it on the table.

I opened it.

The first page was a legal document.

I read the title.

My eyes widened.

“What is this?””

Michael answered quietly.

“A backup agreement.””

I looked at him.

“A backup?””

“Your father created it after the first contract was signed.””

Daniel took the document and read through it.

After a few seconds, his expression changed.

“This is significant.””

“What does it say?””

Daniel looked at me.

“It states that any transfer of your ownership rights caused by deception, coercion, or misrepresentation can be challenged.””

I stared.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning the contract Mark used against you may not be enforceable.””

The words felt unreal.

I looked at Michael.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“He knew Mark was going to betray me?””

Michael shook his head.

“He suspected.””

I closed the folder.

“So he prepared for my heartbreak.””

Michael looked down.

“Yes.””

That was the strangest part.

My father had spent years controlling everything in my life.

My education.

My career.

My choices.

But this time, the one thing he prepared for was the moment someone would hurt me.

And he never told me.

“Where is my father now?””

Michael hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“What?””

“He’s been trying to contact you.””

“Since when?””

“Since yesterday.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Daniel noticed.

“Michael.””

He sighed.

“There’s another reason.””

I looked at him.

“Another secret?””

He nodded.

“Your father didn’t just know about the contract.””

The silence returned.

“He knew about the person behind the investment that helped Mark after Emma’s money came in.””

I frowned.

“What person?””

Michael looked at me.

“The anonymous investor.””

I froze.

“Anonymous investor?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“There was no anonymous investor.””

Michael gave me a painful look.

“That’s what you were told.””

My heart started beating faster.

Three years ago, I had tracked every dollar.

Every investment.

Every contract.

I knew the numbers.

I knew the structure.

Or I thought I did.

“Who was it?””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“The investor was connected to Mark.””

I felt a cold wave move through me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Mark wasn’t just accepting help.””

Daniel looked serious.

“He was receiving strategic support.””

Michael nodded.

“Someone was preparing him.””

“For what?””

Michael looked at me.

“To take control.””

The words sat between us.

And suddenly, everything connected.

The sudden contracts.

The rapid expansion.

The confidence.

The change.

Mark hadn’t simply become successful.

Someone had helped create a version of him that could replace me.

I turned toward the restaurant entrance.

Mark was gone.

“He left.””

Michael nodded.

“He probably knew this conversation was coming.””

A bitter smile crossed my face.

“Of course he did.””

Daniel gathered the papers.

“We need to move quickly.””

“Why?””

“Because if Mark knows the original agreement can be challenged, he may try to protect himself.””

I looked at him.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning he may transfer assets, destroy records, or disappear behind legal barriers.””

I looked at the documents in my hands.

Three years of my life.

Three years of my work.

Three years of trusting the wrong people.

But for the first time tonight, I felt something stronger than pain.

Clarity.

I wasn’t chasing revenge.

I wasn’t trying to destroy Mark.

I wanted the truth.

All of it.

“Take me to my father.””

Michael looked surprised.

“Emma—”

“Now.””

He nodded.

But before we could leave, Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed instantly.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He didn’t respond.

He listened for several seconds.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“Emma.””

“What?””

He looked at the documents in my hands.

“The ownership records for Hayes Innovations were just changed.””

My heart dropped.

“Changed by who?””

Daniel looked at me.

And the answer made my blood run cold.

“Your father.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He just transferred the company shares.””

“To who?””

He looked toward the city outside.

May you like

Then said the name.

“Mark Hayes.””
