Amused

Chapter 2: The Name Hidden In The Shadows

The lawyer’s question hung in the air.

“Should I explain to him who actually owns the company he has been calling his?””

Nobody moved.

Not the guests watching from nearby tables.

Not Vanessa.

Not even Mark.

For the first time in years, I saw the man I once loved completely speechless.

Mark stared at the folder in my hands as if it contained something impossible. His confident posture disappeared. His shoulders lowered slightly, and the arrogance that had filled his voice minutes earlier was replaced by something much more fragile.

Fear.

“Emma,” he said slowly.

My name sounded different coming from him now.

Not like a reminder.

Like a question.

“What is this?””

I looked at the lawyer.

“Daniel, you can explain.””

Daniel nodded and opened the folder.

“Mr. Hayes, three years ago, when Hayes Innovations was facing financial difficulties, the company received a private investment that prevented bankruptcy.””

Mark swallowed.

“I know that.””

“No,” Daniel replied calmly.

“You know the investment existed. You were never informed of the full ownership structure.””

Mark frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel placed a document on the table.

“It means the investment agreement gave controlling rights to the investor.””

Mark stared at the paper.

“That’s impossible. I founded that company.””

I watched him say those words.

I had heard them before.

Hundreds of times.

At business dinners.

During interviews.

Online.

“I built this from nothing.””

That was always the sentence Mark used.

But he never mentioned the nights I stayed awake reviewing his business plans.

The weekends I spent analyzing market reports.

The calls I made to investors who refused to speak with him.

He never mentioned the woman behind the curtain.

Because he never thought there was anyone worth mentioning.

Daniel adjusted his glasses.

“You founded the original concept, Mr. Hayes. But after the investment agreement, ownership was divided according to the contract.””

Mark shook his head.

“No.””

His voice became louder.

“No, that’s not how it works.””

Several guests looked over again.

The same people who had watched him humiliate me were now watching him lose control.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Mark, what is he saying?””

Mark ignored her.

He looked at me.

“You knew?””

I held his gaze.

“Yes.””

“You knew this whole time?””

“Yes.””

His face tightened.

“And you just let me believe I owned everything?””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You let yourself believe that.””

His expression hardened.

“That’s not fair.””

Fair.

The word almost surprised me.

After everything.

After tonight.

After all the things he had said.

He still wanted to talk about fairness.

I stepped closer.

“Do you remember the night you came to my apartment?””

Mark looked away.

I continued.

“The night before your first major presentation?””

His silence answered for him.

“You were shaking.””

My voice softened slightly.

“You said you were terrified everyone would realize you weren’t good enough.””

A memory flashed across my mind.

A younger Mark sitting on my kitchen floor, surrounded by papers and empty coffee cups.

“I’m not a businessman,” he had whispered.

“I’m just someone with an idea.””

And I had told him:

“Then let me help you become the person who can make that idea real.””

Back then, his eyes filled with gratitude.

Back then, he looked at me like I was his entire world.

But success changed him.

Or maybe success simply revealed him.

“You told me I was the reason you survived,” I said.

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“I was emotional.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were honest.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked confused.

“So you’re telling me Emma secretly owned part of his company?””

Daniel corrected her.

“Not part of it.””

He looked at me.

“The majority stake.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

The confidence she had carried all evening disappeared.

She looked at Mark.

“You never told me that.””

Mark snapped.

“Because I didn’t know.””

The restaurant went silent again.

I watched Vanessa process those words.

She had fallen for the version of Mark he created.

The successful founder.

The wealthy businessman.

The man who could give her luxury.

But now she was seeing the truth.

Mark wasn’t the person he pretended to be.

Not completely.

“Emma,” Mark said quietly.

I looked at him.

“Why?””

The question surprised me.

“Why what?””

“Why hide this?””

His voice cracked slightly.

“Why pretend to be ordinary?””

I looked down at my simple clothes.

Then back at him.

“Because I wanted one thing in my life that money couldn’t buy.””

He stared.

“What?””

“Someone who chose me.””

The words were quiet.

But they landed harder than any insult could have.

Mark looked away.

For a moment, I thought I saw regret.

Real regret.

Then his expression changed.

A familiar expression.

The one he wore whenever he wanted something.

“Emma, listen.””

I almost smiled.

There it was.

The old Mark.

The one who only became gentle when he needed something.

“I made mistakes,” he said.

I didn’t answer.

He stepped closer.

“Obviously, I didn’t understand everything.””

“You didn’t understand me.””

He stopped.

The restaurant remained painfully quiet.

Mark lowered his voice.

“But we can fix this.””

I stared at him.

“Fix what?””

“Our relationship.””

I blinked.

The audacity almost impressed me.

“Mark.””

“I mean it.””

He reached for my hand.

I moved away before he could touch me.

His fingers froze in the air.

“We were together for years,” he said.

“Yes.””

“We loved each other.””

I looked at him.

“I did.””

The silence afterward was brutal.

Mark’s face changed.

“You’re saying you don’t?””

I looked at the man standing in front of me.

The man who once held me through storms.

The man who once promised he would never make me feel invisible.

The man who just laughed at me in front of strangers.

“I loved who you were before everyone started applauding you.””

He looked hurt.

But I continued.

“I don’t know the person standing here anymore.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

A short, bitter laugh.

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at Mark.

“So this is what happened?””

Mark frowned.

“What?””

“You left her because you thought she wasn’t rich enough.””

“That’s not—”

“But she was richer than you.””

His face turned red.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

For the first time, there was no arrogance in her eyes.

Only disbelief.

“You really gave him everything?””

I answered honestly.

“Yes.””

“And he treated you like this?””

I didn’t respond.

Because she already knew the answer.

Mark turned toward Vanessa.

“Don’t make this complicated.””

She stared at him.

“You did that yourself.””

Then she looked at the diamond bracelet on her wrist.

The bracelet he had bought her.

The symbol of the life he wanted everyone to see.

Slowly, she removed it.

The sound of the bracelet hitting the table was louder than it should have been.

“I think I need some air.””

“Vanessa.””

She ignored him.

She walked away.

Mark watched her leave.

Then he turned back to me.

His voice became desperate.

“Emma.””

I picked up the folder.

“No.””

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don’t.””

He stepped closer.

“I was under pressure.””

I looked at him.

“Pressure made you cruel?””

He said nothing.

“Money made you ashamed of me?””

Still nothing.

“Success made you forget who helped you?””

His silence was the only answer I needed.

Daniel quietly closed his briefcase.

“Ms. Carter, there’s one more document you requested.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He handed me another envelope.

Mark noticed.

“What is that?””

I held it.

“This is why I came tonight.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You didn’t come here just to tell me?””

“No.””

A strange feeling crossed his face.

“What does that mean?””

I looked at the envelope.

Then at him.

“For three years, I watched you take credit for something we built together.””

Mark’s expression changed.

“Emma…”

“But I never tried to destroy you.””

I opened the envelope.

“I only wanted to see if there was still a person inside the success.””

His face went pale.

“And?””

I looked at the papers.

Then I looked directly at him.

“I found my answer.””

Mark stepped back.

“What are you going to do?””

I didn’t reply immediately.

Because the truth was...

I had spent three years protecting him.

Protecting his company.

Protecting his reputation.

Protecting the dream we once shared.

But now I had to decide whether I would continue protecting a man who had never protected me.

Daniel checked his watch.

“Ms. Carter, the board meeting begins in thirty minutes.””

Mark froze.

“Board meeting?””

I turned toward the entrance.

“Yes.””

He followed my eyes.

“What board meeting?””

I smiled faintly.

“The one where everyone finally learns who has really been running Hayes Innovations.””

Mark’s face lost all color.

Because he finally understood.

Tonight wasn’t just about a restaurant.

It wasn’t just about Vanessa.

It wasn’t even about our failed relationship.

Tonight was the beginning of him losing the one thing he valued more than anything.

His image.

As I walked toward the door, Mark called my name.

“Emma!””

I stopped.

For a moment, I considered turning around.

Then he said the one sentence I never expected to hear.

“Please don’t take everything from me.””

I slowly looked back.

And I realized something.

He still didn’t understand.

Because I wasn’t taking anything from him.

I was simply taking back what had always belonged to me.

But when I reached the doorway, Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

His expression changed immediately.

“Wait... are you certain?””

I stopped walking.

Daniel looked at me.

“Ms. Carter.””

Something in his voice made my stomach tighten.

“What happened?””

He lowered the phone.

“The board meeting has been delayed.””

“Why?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“Because someone just submitted evidence that you were never the original owner of the company.””

My heart stopped.

Mark looked up.

And for the first time that night...

May you like

He smiled.

Because someone else had just entered the game.
