Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Secret in the Archive

The first officer entered the chamber with his weapon raised.

“Everyone stay where you are!””

My father was on the floor beside me.

Rochelle crouched near the desk.

Marcus was checking the corridor.

But Vanessa had disappeared.

So had the ownership certificate.

“Where did she go?”” I shouted.

An officer pointed toward the western passage.

“She ran through the service tunnel!””

Marcus immediately recognized the route.

“That's the old loading corridor. It connects to the rear parking area.””

The officer spoke into his radio.

“Suspect heading west through the service tunnel. Female, black hair, carrying a leather case.””

I helped my father stand.

“Dad, are you sure you're okay?””

He nodded.

“Go after her.””

“I'm not leaving you.””

“Ethan, listen to me. She has the certificate.””

Rochelle approached.

“Your father needs medical attention. The officers will handle the search.””

My father gripped my arm.

“There's something I haven't told you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Dad, please tell me it isn't another secret.””

He gave a tired smile.

“I wish it weren't.””

He looked toward the metal desk.

“Open the bottom drawer.””

I pulled it open.

Inside was a small black notebook.

Its cover was worn, and the pages smelled of dust.

My father pointed.

“Your grandfather kept that with the original records.””

I opened it.

The first page contained a handwritten message.

To my grandson, if you are ever old enough to read this, understand that the land was never the most valuable thing I owned.

I turned the page.

There were names.

Dates.

Amounts.

And references to several companies.

Rochelle leaned closer.

“Is this the ledger Richard mentioned?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

I continued reading.

Then I stopped.

A name appeared halfway down the page.

*Robert Cole — Final Payment Authorized.*

Beneath it was a date.

The day before my grandfather died.

My father touched the page.

“That's the payment they made to arrange his death.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Why didn't you report it?””

“Because I didn't have proof. And because Robert threatened to destroy our family if I spoke.””

Rochelle carefully photographed the page.

“We'll preserve this as evidence.””

I turned another page.

There was a handwritten note.

*Richard Vance — Approved.*

My stomach tightened.

I looked toward the corridor.

“Richard approved the payment?””

My father nodded.

“He was there that night.””

I remembered Richard's earlier words.

I left him alive.

Now I understood why he had been so careful with his answers.

He might not have killed my grandfather personally.

But he had known about the plan.

And he had helped make it possible.

“Why did you never tell me?”” I asked.

My father lowered his head.

“Because your grandfather made me promise to keep you away from these people.””

I stared at him.

“And you thought marrying Vanessa was a way to keep me away?””

“No. I thought she had changed.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

My father continued.

“When Vanessa first came to our house, I recognized her surname. I knew Robert Cole's daughter had worked with Richard.””

My stomach twisted.

“You knew who she was?””

“Yes.””

“And you let me marry her?””

“I tried to warn you.””

I remembered our argument the night before the wedding.

My mother had been upset.

My father had asked me to reconsider.

I had accused him of being unfair.

He looked devastated.

“I should have told you everything. But I was afraid you would confront them before I had the documents.””

I swallowed.

“You should have trusted me.””

“I know.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Rochelle's phone rang.

She answered.

“Grant speaking.””

She listened.

Her face became serious.

“What do you mean the vehicle has left the property?””

She turned toward Marcus.

“Vanessa escaped through the western exit. Security has footage of her entering a black SUV.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Robert.””

I looked at him.

“Can they track the vehicle?””

“Police are working on it.””

I looked at the notebook.

There was one final page.

A name appeared beneath several crossed-out entries.

*Ethan Carter.*

My blood went cold.

I turned the notebook toward Rochelle.

She read it.

Then looked at my father.

“Why is Ethan listed here?””

My father sighed.

“Because your grandfather knew this would eventually happen.””

He pointed to a handwritten note.

“Read it.””

I did.

If the original ownership certificate is ever challenged, the final beneficiary must personally approve the transfer. No representative, spouse, attorney, or company may exercise that right.

I stared.

“So Vanessa needed me to sign the papers.””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“Not just because I owned the company.””

“No.””

He touched the page.

“Because you were the final beneficiary.””

Rochelle looked at the original certificate's empty case.

“Then the document Vanessa took cannot transfer ownership without Ethan's authorization.””

My father shook his head.

“Not exactly.””

He reached into his jacket.

From an inside pocket, he removed a folded sheet of paper.

“Your grandfather made a second provision.””

I unfolded it.

It was an amendment dated several years after the original agreement.

The language was difficult to understand, but Rochelle read it carefully.

Her expression changed.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

She looked up.

“If Ethan refuses to authorize the transfer, the controlling interest remains with the Carter family trust.””

“Meaning?””

“Meaning Vanessa cannot take the property through marriage or a simple corporate filing.””

I exhaled.

“Then why did she need the certificate?””

My father answered.

“Because the certificate contains the original trust instructions. Without it, the amendment can be challenged.””

Rochelle nodded.

“We need to secure the document and obtain a court order preventing any further transfers.””

I looked at the notebook.

There were still several names I didn't recognize.

One was marked with a star.

*J. HARRINGTON — SPECIAL AUTHORIZATION.*

I pointed to it.

“Who is this?””

My father frowned.

“I don't know.””

Richard's voice came from the doorway.

“I do.””

Everyone turned.

He was standing beside two officers.

His hands were cuffed in front of him.

An officer spoke.

“Mr. Vance requested to provide additional information concerning the recovered records.””

I looked at Richard.

“Who is Harrington?””

Richard swallowed.

“Judge Jonathan Harrington.””

Rochelle's expression hardened.

“Are you alleging that a judge was involved in these transactions?””

Richard nodded.

“He signed the original emergency order that allowed Vantage Holdings to take control of the Carter property.””

“That order was based on what evidence?”” Rochelle asked.

“An affidavit claiming your grandfather had voluntarily surrendered his ownership rights.””

My father shook his head.

“He never signed that.””

Richard nodded.

“I know.””

I stared at him.

“You knew all along?””

Richard looked down.

“I signed the affidavit.””

The silence was unbearable.

“You lied to a judge?””

“Yes.””

“You helped take my grandfather's property?””

“Yes.””

“And you let Vanessa target me?””

Richard closed his eyes.

“I thought I could control her.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That's what everyone says.””

He looked at me.

“Ethan, I need you to understand something. Robert Cole was never working for me. I was working for him.””

Rochelle frowned.

“What?””

Richard continued.

“Robert had influence over the original investment group. He arranged the transfers, recruited the people who handled the money, and made sure the paperwork appeared legitimate.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted the archive.””

I looked at the notebook.

“What's so important about those records?””

Richard took a breath.

“They prove that the industrial property was purchased using money diverted from several legitimate businesses. Some of those businesses belonged to Robert's clients. Others belonged to investors who were never informed about the transactions.””

“And the payment to kill my grandfather?””

Richard nodded.

“Robert arranged it. I approved the transfer because I was afraid he would expose my own involvement.””

My father stepped forward.

“You let him die.””

Richard looked at him.

“Yes.””

My father raised his hand as if he wanted to strike him.

I caught his arm.

“Dad. Let the police handle it.””

Richard lowered his head.

“I'm willing to testify.””

Rochelle answered immediately.

“Your cooperation does not erase your responsibility.””

“I know.””

“Then tell us where Robert is.””

Richard hesitated.

“He has a property outside Atlanta. An old estate near Lake Lanier.””

Marcus frowned.

“That's where Vanessa used to stay.””

Richard nodded.

“She has been using it as a temporary headquarters.””

I checked my phone.

There was a new message from an unknown number.

A photograph.

Vanessa stood inside a luxurious living room.

Robert was beside her.

The leather case was on a table.

Beneath the photograph was a message.

*YOU HAVE THE LEDGER. I HAVE THE CERTIFICATE. WE BOTH KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.*

A second message arrived.

*MIDNIGHT. LAKE HOUSE. COME WITHOUT POLICE IF YOU WANT TO SEE THE REST OF THE TRUTH.*

I showed Rochelle.

She shook her head.

“No. Absolutely not.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Robert knows we have the ledger.””

My father sat down heavily.

“Then he'll come for it.””

I stared at the message.

“Why does he want both documents?””

Richard answered.

“Because together they establish the complete ownership history. The certificate proves who owns the property. The ledger proves how the ownership was stolen.””

“And if he gets both?””

“He can destroy the evidence and challenge the trust.””

Rochelle shook her head.

“He cannot simply erase legally established ownership by possessing documents. But he can create enormous complications, especially if fraudulent filings are made.””

I looked at the clock.

11:16 p.m.

Less than an hour remained.

My father reached for my hand.

“Ethan, don't go.””

I looked at him.

“I won't go alone.””

“That's not what I mean.””

He lowered his voice.

“Your grandfather spent his final days trying to protect you from this family. I don't want you making the same mistake.””

I looked at the notebook.

Then at the photograph of Vanessa.

The woman who had promised to love me forever.

The woman who had planned to take my company.

The woman who now possessed the document that could settle my family's ownership rights.

“Dad, I'm not going there for Vanessa.””

“Then why?””

“To make sure this ends.””

Rochelle began coordinating with the investigators.

She insisted that no private meeting would take place without a law enforcement response plan.

Marcus volunteered to identify the estate's access points.

Richard agreed to provide a statement.

My father was taken to a nearby hospital for examination.

Before leaving, he gripped my hand.

“Ethan.””

“Yes?””

“There's something else in the ledger.””

I opened it.

He pointed to the last page.

A handwritten note was tucked inside the binding.

It was dated two days before my grandfather died.

I unfolded it.

The message was brief.

Robert believes he has won. But he doesn't know that I kept the original beneficiary's identity out of the company records.

Beneath it was a name.

*ETHAN CARTER.*

I stared.

My grandfather had made me the beneficiary before I was even born.

And then I noticed the final sentence.

If they ever come for the certificate, ask your father who was present when I changed the will.

I looked at my father.

He had gone completely pale.

“Dad?””

He swallowed.

Then he whispered:

“Your mother was there.””

I frowned.

“Mom?””

He nodded.

“She knows who killed your grandfather.””

Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.

It was my mother.

I answered.

“Mom?””

Her voice was barely audible.

“Ethan, sweetheart, I need you to listen.””

“What's wrong?””

She began crying.

“Vanessa just called me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did she say?””

My mother took a shaky breath.

“She said if I want to see your father alive again, I need to tell you the truth.””

“What truth?””

Then my mother whispered:

“Your grandfather wasn't the only person they tried to kill that night.””

The line went silent.

And somewhere in the background, I heard a man's voice.

“Margaret, give me the phone.””

May you like

My blood ran cold.

It was Robert Cole.
