Amused

Chapter 3: The Signature of a Dead Man

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

A dead man had supposedly witnessed my mother's signature.

And somehow, that document was connected to my family's home.

My mother gripped my arm.

“Ethan, what does that mean?””

I forced myself to breathe.

“Mom, don't worry. We're going to find out.””

Vanessa stood several feet away, crying silently.

Darius was no longer smiling.

Rochelle took my phone.

“I'm attorney Rochelle Grant. Please email the documents to me immediately. Do not make any further changes to the relevant records.””

She listened.

Then nodded.

“Understood. Preserve everything.””

She handed the phone back.

“We need to get your mother somewhere private.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Did you use my wife?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Mr. Carter, please—”

“Don't call me that,” he interrupted.

“You have eaten at my table. My wife treated you like her own daughter.””

His voice cracked.

“And now you're telling me she signed something she didn't understand?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“I didn't know it would go this far.””

My father stepped closer.

“What exactly did you know?””

She didn't answer.

Darius checked his watch.

“Vanessa, we need to leave.””

I moved between them.

“Neither of you is leaving until we understand what's happening.””

Darius raised his eyebrows.

“You can't detain us.””

“I didn't say I could. But if you leave, I will make sure the relevant authorities receive every document, message, and transaction connected to this matter.””

He stared at me.

Then he laughed.

“You think you're the first wealthy man who has threatened me?””

“No. I think you're the first man who has tried to steal my company while standing at my wedding.””

Rochelle stepped forward.

“Ethan, don't engage him. We have enough to begin a formal investigation.””

She turned to Darius.

“You are not required to answer questions here. But you should understand that any attempt to destroy records or conceal evidence could make your situation considerably worse.””

Darius's face hardened.

“You have no idea who you're dealing with.””

“Neither do you,” Rochelle replied.

For the first time, Darius looked uncertain.

Then he turned and walked toward the ballroom.

Vanessa followed.

I watched them go.

“Where are they going?”” my mother asked.

“I don't know.””

But Rochelle did.

She glanced at the documents on her tablet.

“Ethan, we need to move quickly. Your company's subsidiary may be involved in an unauthorized transaction. And your mother's signature needs to be independently verified.””

I nodded.

“Do whatever you need to do.””

My mother touched my cheek.

“Sweetheart, I'm so sorry.””

I shook my head.

“You didn't do anything wrong.””

“But I signed something.””

“Because someone you trusted told you it was harmless.””

She began crying.

I hugged her.

For a moment, I was no longer a thirty-three-year-old business owner in an expensive tuxedo.

I was just a son trying to protect his mother.

Then my father asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Son, are you still going to marry her?””

I looked toward the ballroom.

Two hundred guests were waiting.

The orchestra had stopped playing.

The flower arrangements still stood beneath the chandeliers.

The wedding cake was untouched.

Everything was ready for a celebration.

Except the groom.

“No, Dad.””

He nodded.

“Good.””

My mother looked up.

“Are you sure?””

I took her hand.

“Mom, I heard her laughing about stealing everything I built. I don't think there's anything left to be sure about.””

Rochelle received an email.

She opened the attachment.

Then she stared at the screen.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she enlarged the document.

At the bottom was the name of the witness.

*MARCUS REED.*

The former fiancé.

The man Darius had mentioned.

The man who had supposedly died four years earlier.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“That's impossible.””

Rochelle nodded.

“It's certainly suspicious.””

My mother looked between us.

“Who is Marcus Reed?””

I explained what Darius had told us.

When I finished, my mother slowly sat down.

“Vanessa told me about him once.””

I turned.

“What did she say?””

“She said he had been a very controlling man. That he wanted to stop her from having a career.””

“Did she say he was dead?””

My mother nodded.

“She said he died in a car accident shortly after they separated.””

Rochelle looked at the document again.

“The date on this authorization is six months after his reported death.””

I stared at the screen.

“So either someone forged his signature, or he wasn't dead.””

“Correct,” Rochelle said.

My father shook his head.

“This is bigger than a wedding.””

I agreed.

But I still didn't understand why someone would use a dead man's signature to gain control of a family trust.

Then my phone vibrated again.

Another message from the unknown number.

*You are looking in the wrong direction.*

A second message followed.

*Ask Vanessa what happened to the original owner of Vantage Holdings.*

I looked toward the ballroom.

Vanessa and Darius were standing near the entrance.

She was speaking urgently into his ear.

He shook his head.

Then he took her phone.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, a photograph appeared.

It showed Vanessa standing beside an older man in front of a private aircraft.

The date was three years earlier.

The man wore a dark suit and a gold wedding band.

I recognized him immediately.

Not because I had met him.

Because his photograph had appeared in several business publications.

His name was Richard Vance.

A wealthy Atlanta investor who had disappeared from public life after a financial scandal.

I looked at the message beneath the photograph.

*Richard Vance was the original owner of Vantage Holdings. He disappeared after reporting millions of dollars missing from his accounts.*

I swallowed.

Then another message appeared.

*Vanessa was the last person seen with him.*

I showed Rochelle.

She studied the photograph.

“Do you know this man?””

“Richard Vance. I met him once at a commercial property conference.””

Rochelle looked at me.

“Was he connected to your company?””

“Not directly.””

“Did you ever discuss a transaction with him?””

I thought back.

Three years earlier, Richard had approached me about acquiring a large parcel of commercial land outside Atlanta.

I had declined.

The proposed price was too low, and his company structure seemed unnecessarily complicated.

At the time, I thought he was simply an aggressive investor.

Now I wondered whether that meeting had been the beginning of something else.

My phone rang again.

The unknown number.

I answered.

“Who is this?””

A man's voice came through.

“Ethan Carter?””

“Yes. Who are you?””

“My name is Daniel Price. I used to work for Richard Vance.””

“Why are you contacting me?””

“Because I heard about your wedding.””

I looked at Rochelle.

She gestured for me to put the call on speaker.

Daniel continued.

“I've been trying to reach you for three months.””

“Why?””

“Because Vanessa knows you own properties Richard wanted before he disappeared.””

My throat tightened.

“What properties?””

“The industrial development sites near the airport. The ones connected to your newest expansion.””

I exchanged a glance with Rochelle.

Those properties were among my company's most valuable holdings.

Daniel continued.

“Richard believed they contained something he needed. When he disappeared, Vanessa took control of several of his business relationships.””

“What does that have to do with my wedding?””

“Everything.””

I gripped the phone.

“Explain.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Vanessa didn't meet you at that charity fundraiser by accident.””

The hallway seemed to tilt.

“What?””

“She was working for Richard's investment group. Her assignment was to identify developers with valuable property portfolios and establish personal relationships with them.””

I looked at my mother.

She was watching me with frightened eyes.

Daniel continued.

“Your company was on her list.””

My voice dropped.

“Are you telling me she targeted me?””

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Nine years.

Nine years of sacrifice.

And perhaps two years of my life had been carefully arranged by someone who had never loved me.

But Daniel wasn't finished.

“There's something else you need to know.””

“What?””

“Richard Vance didn't disappear because of missing money.””

“Then why?””

“Because he discovered someone inside his company had been transferring assets without his authorization.””

I looked toward the ballroom.

Vanessa was now arguing with Darius.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“And the person he suspected was Vanessa.””

My stomach twisted.

“Do you have proof?””

“I have copies of emails, account records, and a recording Richard made before he disappeared.””

“Where are you?””

“Outside the hotel.””

I turned toward the entrance.

“Come inside.””

“No.””

“Why not?””

“Because I saw Darius arrive twenty minutes ago.””

I stared at the door.

Daniel continued.

“He wasn't supposed to know I was here.””

A cold silence followed.

Then I asked the question that mattered most.

“Daniel, what does he want?””

“To make sure nobody ever hears what Richard recorded.””

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

Rochelle immediately contacted hotel security and asked them to preserve the relevant camera footage.

My father moved beside my mother.

“Son, we're leaving.””

I nodded.

But before we could move, a hotel employee hurried toward us.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“There's a gentleman downstairs asking for you. He says it's urgent.””

“Daniel Price?””

The employee shook his head.

“No, sir.””

“Then who?””

The man swallowed.

“He says his name is Marcus Reed.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“That can't be possible.””

The employee looked toward the hotel entrance.

“Sir, he also asked me to tell you something.””

“What?””

The employee hesitated.

Then he spoke.

“He said the woman you're about to marry already knows he's alive.””

I turned toward the ballroom.

May you like

Vanessa was gone.

And Darius was nowhere to be seen.
