Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Locked Door

The police arrived at the industrial facility at 10:42 p.m.

By then, the building had become a maze of darkness, emergency lights, and locked security doors.

My father was somewhere underground.

Vanessa was with him.

And Darius had a weapon.

Rochelle insisted that I remain outside.

I argued for almost ten minutes.

Then she said something that stopped me.

“If you rush inside and get yourself killed, your father loses the only person who can help him recover what belongs to your family.””

I hated that she was right.

So I stood beside a police vehicle while officers reviewed the building plans.

Marcus was speaking with the tactical team.

Richard sat in the back of another vehicle, guarded by two officers.

He looked like a man who had finally run out of places to hide.

An officer approached us.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“Your father has been located on an internal camera.””

“Is he hurt?””

“We can't confirm that yet.””

“Can you see Vanessa?””

The officer nodded.

“She's with him.””

“Darius?””

“Not on the same camera.””

I looked toward the building.

“What are you waiting for?””

The officer remained professional.

“We need to identify the safest access point. There may be additional people inside.””

Marcus returned.

“They're in the original archive chamber.””

“How do you know?””

“The chamber has an old ventilation system. There's a small inspection panel behind the western wall.””

The officer studied him.

“Can you identify it?””

Marcus nodded.

“I can show you.””

Rochelle approached me.

“Ethan, the police have asked everyone connected to the matter to remain available for questioning.””

“Fine.””

“Also, your company has suspended all pending ownership changes.””

I exhaled.

“At least that's something.””

“There's more. The suspicious transfer application has been flagged, and the corporate bank has placed additional verification requirements on the affected accounts.””

I nodded.

Then I looked toward the building again.

A sudden shout came from the police radio.

“Movement inside the lower corridor!””

Everyone turned.

A second later, a man emerged through a side exit.

It was Darius.

He held a black bag in one hand.

Two officers ordered him to stop.

Instead, he ran.

“Police! Stop!””

He reached the parking area before an officer caught him.

The bag fell open.

Documents scattered across the pavement.

Darius struggled, but the officers restrained him and placed him in handcuffs.

I approached.

“Where's my father?””

Darius looked at me.

Then he smiled.

“Your wedding didn't go as planned, did it?””

I grabbed the front of his jacket.

“Where is he?””

An officer pulled me back.

“Sir, step away.””

Darius laughed.

“Your father is a stubborn old man. Just like his father.””

I stared at him.

“What did you do to him?””

“Nothing permanent.””

The officer tightened the handcuffs.

“Darius Cole, you're being detained while we investigate the alleged threats and the documents recovered from your possession.””

Darius continued smiling.

“You're wasting your time.””

He looked directly at me.

“Your bride has the certificate. And if she gives it to you, she'll lose everything.””

I stepped closer.

“Why would she lose anything?””

Darius lowered his voice.

“Because she's not the only one who signed the original transfer agreement.””

Then he was taken away.

Rochelle picked up one of the scattered papers.

Her expression changed.

“Ethan.””

“What?””

She showed me the document.

It was a copy of the original ownership agreement.

There were three signatures at the bottom.

Richard Vance.

Robert Cole.

And my father.

But something was different.

My father's signature was accompanied by a handwritten note.

*SIGNED UNDER PROTEST. BENEFICIAL OWNERSHIP RESERVED FOR THOMAS CARTER'S DESCENDANTS.*

I stared.

“That's Dad's handwriting.””

Rochelle nodded.

“It appears to be.””

Marcus approached.

“Your father never surrendered the shares.””

“Then why did Richard claim he did?””

Marcus looked toward Richard's vehicle.

“Because he wanted the property.””

I turned.

“Why?””

Richard had been listening.

He finally spoke.

“Because the archive contained something worth far more than the land.””

“What?””

Richard looked at me.

“A set of original financial ledgers connecting several powerful investors to illegal transactions over three decades.””

Rochelle studied him.

“Names of public officials?””

Richard nodded.

“Some.””

“Business executives?””

“Yes.””

“Lawyers?””

“Several.””

I shook my head.

“And Vanessa wanted these records?””

Richard sighed.

“She wanted them because they could protect her.””

“From prosecution?””

“From the people who would blame her for everything.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Richard, stop pretending this is about protection. You wanted the ledger because it could expose you, too.””

Richard looked away.

The officer returned.

“Mr. Carter, we have a development.””

I turned immediately.

“What?””

“Your father has made contact with our officers.””

“Is he safe?””

“He's alive and conscious. But he refuses to leave the archive chamber without speaking to you.””

I started walking.

Rochelle caught my arm.

“Wait. The area hasn't been cleared.””

“I need to see him.””

“We'll proceed with the officers.””

We followed them through the side entrance.

The industrial facility smelled of rust, damp concrete, and old machinery.

Our footsteps echoed through the corridors.

Several lights flickered overhead.

A metal staircase led downward.

At the bottom, a police officer stood beside a heavy steel door.

“Mr. Carter, your father is inside.””

I approached.

“Dad?””

His voice came through the door.

“Ethan?””

“I'm here.””

“Are you alone?””

“No. The police are with me.””

There was a pause.

Then he said:

“Don't let Richard come inside.””

I looked at Rochelle.

“Understood.””

The officer unlocked the door.

It opened slowly.

My father stood beside a metal desk.

His shirt was torn, and there was dried blood near his temple.

But he was alive.

I rushed forward and embraced him.

“Dad.””

He held me tightly.

“I'm sorry, son.””

“Don't say that. Are you hurt?””

“Just a cut.””

I looked around.

Vanessa stood near a wall.

Her hair was disheveled.

Her wedding makeup had completely disappeared.

She was holding a small leather case.

The original certificate.

I turned toward her.

“Give it to the officers.””

She looked at my father.

Then back at me.

“I need to explain something.””

“You've had all day to explain.””

“Please.””

I shook my head.

“Not another lie.””

She opened the leather case.

Inside was an old document with a faded red seal.

My father looked at it.

“That's the one.””

I reached toward it.

But Vanessa pulled it back.

“Ethan, if I hand this over, everything changes.””

“Good.””

“You don't understand. Your grandfather didn't leave the property to you because he wanted you to become wealthy.””

“Then why?””

She stared at me.

“Because he knew someone would eventually come looking for the archive.””

My father stepped forward.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She looked at him.

“I'm trying to save him.””

“By holding the certificate hostage?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“By making sure Richard never gets it.””

I turned toward her.

“Richard is outside in police custody.””

She shook her head.

“You still don't understand. Richard isn't the most dangerous person involved.””

“Who is?””

She hesitated.

Then she looked at the steel door.

A sound echoed from the corridor.

Footsteps.

The officers outside raised their voices.

“Stop! Identify yourself!””

A man's voice answered.

“I'm here for my daughter.””

Vanessa's face went white.

My father whispered:

“Robert.””

I turned toward her.

“Your father is alive?””

She nodded slowly.

Then the lights went out.

A gunshot exploded somewhere beyond the door.

My father pulled me to the ground.

The emergency lights flickered red.

And in the darkness, Vanessa screamed:

“DAD, DON'T!””

When the lights returned, she was gone.

May you like

So was the leather case.

And the steel door was standing wide open.
