Amused

Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For three seconds, I couldn't move.

Marcus Reed was alive.

The man Vanessa had described as her dead former fiancé was standing somewhere inside the hotel, asking to see me.

And she had disappeared.

“Where is he?”” I demanded.

The hotel employee pointed toward the main lobby.

“Near the private elevators, sir. He asked me not to announce his arrival.””

Rochelle immediately stepped in front of me.

“Ethan, wait. We don't know who this person is or what he wants.””

“He knows Vanessa.””

“That's precisely why we need to be careful.””

My father took my mother's hand.

“I'm taking your mother upstairs. This is no place for her.””

My mother shook her head.

“I'm not leaving my son.””

“Margaret,” my father said gently, “we need to make sure you're safe.””

She looked at me.

“Please don't trust anyone without knowing the truth.””

I kissed her forehead.

“I won't.””

Rochelle asked the hotel employee to arrange a private meeting room. Then she called security and requested that someone accompany us.

Five minutes later, I was standing outside a conference room on the hotel's second floor.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

He was in his late thirties, with short brown hair, a faint scar across his left cheek, and tired eyes.

He wore a black jacket over a plain white shirt.

He looked nothing like the polished men Vanessa usually surrounded herself with.

But the moment he saw me, he said something that made my stomach tighten.

“Ethan Carter. You look exactly like your father.””

I frowned.

“Have we met?””

“No. But I knew your father before I knew you existed.””

He extended his hand.

“Marcus Reed.””

I didn't take it immediately.

“You're supposed to be dead.””

He gave a humorless smile.

“I've been hearing that for four years.””

Rochelle stepped forward.

“Mr. Reed, before we proceed, I need to establish who you are and why you're here.””

Marcus nodded.

“Fair enough.””

He reached into his jacket and slowly removed a driver's license and a small identification card.

Rochelle examined both.

Then she looked at him.

“Why did you disappear?””

Marcus glanced toward the hallway.

“Because the last time I tried to expose Vanessa, someone attempted to kill me.””

Silence filled the room.

I stared at him.

“Tell me everything.””

Marcus entered the conference room.

We followed.

He sat at the table and placed a black leather folder in front of him.

“Four years ago, Vanessa and I were engaged. I worked as a financial controller for Richard Vance's investment group.””

“You were engaged to her?”” I asked.

“Yes. We were together for almost three years.””

He opened the folder.

“Initially, I thought she was ambitious, intelligent, and loyal. Richard trusted her. I trusted her. Everyone did.””

“What changed?””

“I discovered that money was disappearing from several investment accounts.””

He removed a printed spreadsheet.

“Small amounts at first. Then larger transactions. They were being moved through shell companies before eventually reaching Vantage Holdings.””

Rochelle leaned forward.

“Who controlled Vantage Holdings?””

“Richard did. At least, that was what the records showed.””

Marcus placed another document on the table.

“But the actual beneficiary was someone else.””

“Who?””

He looked directly at me.

“Vanessa.””

My jaw tightened.

“How much money?””

“Initially? Around eight hundred thousand dollars. Eventually, several million.””

Rochelle examined the document.

“These records need independent verification.””

“I agree,” Marcus said.

“That's why I brought the originals and the correspondence.””

He opened the leather folder further.

There were bank statements, emails, photographs, and copies of corporate registrations.

I recognized several company names.

One of them was connected to a commercial development project my company had investigated two years earlier.

“Why did you stay with her after discovering this?””

Marcus looked down.

“Because I loved her.””

The answer was simple.

And it hurt more than I expected.

He continued.

“I confronted Vanessa privately. She cried. She said Richard had forced her to move the money because he was trying to hide assets from his creditors.””

“Did you believe her?””

“For a while.””

He removed a photograph.

It showed Vanessa sitting beside Richard Vance at a restaurant.

Her hand rested on his.

Marcus watched my expression.

“They weren't simply business associates.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Were they having an affair?””

“I believe so. But I never had enough evidence to prove it.””

Rochelle asked, “What happened after you confronted her?””

Marcus leaned back.

“She told me she wanted to end our engagement. Two days later, I received a call saying Richard wanted to meet me.””

“Did you go?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“An abandoned office building outside Atlanta.””

He rubbed his scar.

“When I arrived, two men were waiting. They told me Richard had changed his mind about meeting me.””

“What happened?””

“They attacked me.””

The room became silent.

Marcus touched the scar on his cheek.

“I escaped through a loading entrance. I spent several weeks recovering in a hospital under a different name. By the time I was well enough to speak to the police, I discovered that Vanessa had reported me missing.””

I frowned.

“Why didn't you contact the police immediately?””

“I did. But the documents I had were gone. The accounts had been closed.

Richard had disappeared. And Vanessa had a statement from someone claiming I had stolen company money before running away.””

Rochelle looked up.

“Who made that statement?””

Marcus slid another paper across the table.

“Darius Cole.””

I recognized the name.

“The man at my wedding?””

Marcus nodded.

“He was Richard's financial adviser.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“So Darius helped frame you?””

“He helped make me disappear.””

I looked at the documents.

“Why come back now?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he pulled out a small silver flash drive.

“Because three months ago, I discovered Vanessa was preparing to repeat the same operation.””

“With me?””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“Your company was worth far more than Richard's business had been. Your land holdings were particularly attractive.””

Rochelle examined the flash drive.

“What's on it?””

“Richard's original recording. Emails between Vanessa and Darius. And the first version of the plan they intended to use against Ethan.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn't you contact me sooner?””

“I tried. Vanessa had someone monitoring your office. I couldn't get close without alerting her.””

“Then how did you know about the wedding?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“Because I received an invitation.””

I frowned.

“From whom?””

He placed a small envelope on the table.

The handwriting on the front was familiar.

Vanessa's.

Inside was a single sentence.

If you still care about me, don't let Ethan sign anything.

I read it twice.

Marcus watched me.

“She sent that six weeks ago.””

“Why?””

“I don't know.””

Rochelle looked at the letter.

“Did you respond?””

“No.””

“Why are you here now?””

Marcus leaned forward.

“Because I found out what the transfer papers actually do.””

He opened his folder to a marked page.

“Vantage Holdings isn't simply trying to take ownership of your properties. It has arranged financing against several of them. If the transfer goes through, your company could become responsible for liabilities it never incurred.””

I stared at the page.

“What liabilities?””

“Loans. Unpaid obligations. Possibly fraudulent transactions.””

Rochelle studied the figures.

“This would require a much deeper financial investigation.””

Marcus nodded.

“There's something else.””

He removed a photograph of a man.

I recognized him immediately.

Richard Vance.

But this photograph was different from the one I had seen earlier.

Richard was standing outside a private medical facility.

Beside him was Vanessa.

The photograph was dated three weeks ago.

I looked at Marcus.

“You said Richard disappeared.””

“He did.””

“Then how was this taken?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Because Richard isn't missing anymore.””

My heart began pounding.

“Where is he?””

Marcus looked toward the door.

“Somewhere close.””

Before he could explain, Rochelle's phone rang.

She answered.

“What?””

A pause.

Then her expression hardened.

“Are you certain?””

Another pause.

“Send it immediately.””

She ended the call.

“Ethan, your company has just received an electronic notice concerning an attempted change to the ownership structure of your largest development subsidiary.””

“Was it approved?””

“Not yet. The filing has been flagged for verification.””

I exhaled.

Then Rochelle turned to Marcus.

“Did you know about this?””

Marcus nodded.

“That's why I came.””

He stood and walked toward the window.

“There's one person who can explain exactly why Vanessa chose Ethan.””

“Who?””

He turned.

“Richard Vance.””

A knock sounded at the conference room door.

Everyone froze.

The hotel employee entered.

“Mr. Carter, there's another person asking for you.””

“Who?””

The employee swallowed.

“He says his name is Richard Vance.””

Marcus slowly closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“She's here.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“What do you mean?””

Marcus pointed at the window overlooking the hotel's rear entrance.

A black SUV had just pulled up.

A woman stepped out.

Long black hair.

Cream-colored coat.

Large sunglasses.

Even from the second floor, I recognized her.

Vanessa.

But she wasn't alone.

An older man stepped out of the vehicle behind her.

May you like

Richard Vance.

And he was carrying a briefcase.
