Amused

Chapter 1: The Message That Changed Everything

“Did he sign the transfer papers yet?””

The message appeared on Vanessa’s phone just as she was supposed to walk down the aisle.

I stared at the screen.

DARIUS.

Three words had just confirmed what I had been desperately trying not to believe.

My bride wasn't simply planning to divorce me after the wedding.

She was planning something before it.

Vanessa quickly turned her phone facedown.

“What's wrong, baby?”” she asked, tightening her fingers around my arm.

“You look pale.””

I looked at her.

At the woman wearing a diamond necklace I had bought with my first major development bonus. At the woman whose wedding gown had cost more than my parents' first house. At the woman who had spent the last two years convincing me that I was the only man she had ever truly loved.

“Who's Darius?”” I asked.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

“Darius?”” she repeated.

“Yes. Your phone.””

She laughed nervously.

“Oh, he's a wedding vendor. He's helping with some arrangements.””

“A wedding vendor who wants to know whether I've signed transfer papers?””

Her lips parted.

For two seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Vanessa glanced toward Rochelle.

My attorney stood a few feet away, holding the sealed folder.

“Ethan, this isn't the place,” Vanessa whispered.

“That's interesting. Because twenty minutes ago, you were having a very comfortable conversation in your bridal suite.””

Her face lost its color.

“What?””

“I heard you.””

Vanessa immediately looked around.

Guests were beginning to enter the ballroom. The orchestra played softly. A photographer adjusted his camera near the flower-covered arch.

She lowered her voice.

“Can we please talk privately?””

“Of course. Tell me who Darius is first.””

She swallowed.

“Darius is a friend.””

“A friend who knows about my transfer papers?””

“Ethan, you're embarrassing me.””

I almost smiled.

There it was.

Not an apology.

Not an explanation.

Embarrassment.

Rochelle stepped closer.

“Vanessa, I think everyone would benefit from taking a moment before proceeding with the ceremony.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“Stay out of this, Rochelle.””

“I'm afraid that's not possible. I'm Ethan's attorney.””

“Exactly. You're his attorney. Not ours.””

Rochelle remained calm.

“That's correct. Which is why I'm not asking you to sign anything without your own independent legal advice.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Baby, are you seriously letting her interfere with our wedding?””

I opened the folder.

Inside were documents outlining the assets I had accumulated before our marriage, along with proposed protections for my company, properties, and existing business interests.

Nothing was signed.

Nothing would be signed without proper review.

I had spent six years building a company worth several million dollars. I wasn't going to let anyone pressure me into transferring ownership because we were standing beneath expensive flowers.

“I want to understand what those transfer papers are,” I said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“There are no transfer papers.””

I pulled out my phone.

“I have a message that says otherwise.””

She stared at the screen.

Then she did something I didn't expect.

She started crying.

Not quietly.

Her shoulders shook, and her mascara began running beneath her eyes.

“Ethan, please. You have to understand something.””

“I'm listening.””

“I've been under so much pressure. My family has been putting ideas into my head. I didn't know how to tell you.””

“What ideas?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“My father has debts. Darius was helping us find a way to protect the family.””

I looked at her.

“Protect your family with my company?””

“No! That's not what I meant.””

“Then explain it.””

She grabbed my hand.

“Please don't do this today. We've invited two hundred people. My parents are here.

Your parents are here. Everyone is waiting.””

I gently removed my hand.

“Vanessa, you were laughing about making me rich enough to steal from twenty minutes ago.””

“I was joking!””

“About taking everything I own?””

“Yes! It was a stupid joke.””

I looked at Rochelle.

She didn't speak.

Vanessa continued.

“People say ridiculous things with their friends. You know how women talk. It doesn't mean anything.””

I remembered her voice through that door.

Ethan thinks marriage is forever. That's what makes this so easy.

There had been no joke in her voice.

There had been excitement.

I turned toward the ballroom.

My mother was watching us from the front row.

She had noticed something was wrong.

When our eyes met, she stood.

I couldn't bear the thought of making her watch this.

“Vanessa, did you ask me to put my mother's house in your name?””

Her crying stopped.

“What?””

“Three weeks ago, you asked me to add your name to the deed of the house I bought for my parents.””

“That was because we're getting married!””

“You told me it was for estate planning.””

“It was!””

“And you asked me to give you access to my company accounts.””

“So I could help you!””

“And you wanted me to sign a document last Friday that you said was an insurance authorization.””

Her eyes narrowed.

For the first time, I saw something other than panic.

Anger.

“You're making me sound like some criminal.””

“I'm asking questions.””

“Because your attorney has been poisoning you against me!””

Rochelle finally spoke.

“Vanessa, I haven't spoken to you in months.””

“Exactly! You've always hated me.””

“No. I've always recommended that Ethan understand the legal consequences of major financial decisions.””

Vanessa turned back to me.

“Are you going to believe her over your future wife?””

I didn't answer.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

It showed a document bearing my company logo.

At the bottom was a signature that looked remarkably like mine.

The message underneath read:

*You need to know what your bride has already prepared. Check page seven.*

I opened the attachment.

My heart began pounding.

The document was titled:

*CARTER DEVELOPMENT GROUP — AUTHORIZATION FOR CHANGE OF CONTROL.*

The proposed new controlling entity was a company called Vantage Holdings LLC.

I had never heard of it.

But the signature at the bottom was mine.

Or someone had done an excellent job copying it.

“Ethan?”” Rochelle asked.

I handed her the phone.

She read the first page.

Then the second.

When she reached page seven, her face hardened.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She looked at me.

“Who prepared this?””

“I don't know.””

Rochelle zoomed in on the signature.

“Ethan, this isn't simply a transfer authorization.””

“What does that mean?””

She pointed to a paragraph.

“It gives the named entity authority to acquire controlling interests in specified company assets, subject to the accompanying transaction documents.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What's happening?””

Rochelle looked directly at her.

“That's what we're trying to determine.””

Vanessa's eyes darted toward my phone.

Then toward the ballroom.

And finally toward the exit.

I noticed.

“Vanessa.””

She stopped.

“Where are you going?””

“I need some air.””

“Not yet.””

Her face twisted.

“Excuse me?””

I held up the phone.

“Did you forge my signature?””

She stared at me.

Then she whispered something that made the blood drain from my face.

“Ethan, you weren't supposed to see that until tomorrow.””

For a moment, the orchestra seemed to disappear.

Tomorrow.

Not someday.

Not after a divorce.

Tomorrow.

Rochelle closed the folder.

“We're stopping the ceremony.””

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“No!””

Her voice was so loud that several guests turned.

She immediately lowered it.

“Ethan, please. We can fix this.””

I looked at the woman I had intended to spend the rest of my life with.

“Tell me what happens tomorrow.””

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked toward the ballroom doors.

And someone standing inside raised a hand.

A tall man in a dark gray suit.

He was holding a glass of champagne.

When Vanessa saw him, her entire expression changed.

May you like

She whispered:

“Darius.””
