Chapter 2: The Man Waiting at My Wedding

Darius didn't look like a wedding vendor.
He wore a tailored charcoal suit, an expensive watch, and polished shoes that probably cost more than the average person's monthly rent.
He stood near the entrance as if he owned the place.
When our eyes met, he lifted his champagne glass.
Then he smiled.
Not nervously.
Not apologetically.
Like a man who had expected to see me.
“Who's that?”” I asked.
Vanessa immediately stepped in front of me.
“Ethan, please don't.””
“Don't what?””
“Make a scene.””
I looked past her.
“That's Darius?””
She nodded reluctantly.
“An old family friend.””
“Funny. Your family friend seems very interested in my company's transfer papers.””
Darius began walking toward us.
Rochelle moved closer to my side.
“Ethan, don't discuss any business documents with him until we've established what they are.””
Darius stopped a few feet away.
“Congratulations, Carter.””
His voice was smooth.
He extended his hand.
I didn't take it.
“Who are you?””
He glanced at Vanessa.
“Your wife's friend.””
“She isn't my wife yet.””
Darius chuckled.
“That's a technicality.””
I stared at him.
“Did you send me that document?””
“Which document?””
“The authorization bearing my signature.””
His smile disappeared.
For the first time, I saw him become uncomfortable.
Vanessa quickly interrupted.
“Darius, this isn't the time.””
He looked at her.
“You said everything was ready.””
My stomach tightened.
I turned toward her.
“What did he just say?””
“Nothing,” Vanessa replied.
Darius rubbed his jaw.
“Vanessa, perhaps we should talk privately.””
“No,” I said.
“We're all going to talk right here.””
Guests were now openly watching us.
My father approached from the ballroom.
“Ethan? Son, what's happening?””
I looked at him.
“Dad, I need you to stay with Mom.””
He studied my face.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
“Is everything all right?””
Vanessa immediately put on her familiar smile.
“Of course, Mr. Carter. Ethan is just nervous.””
My father didn't smile back.
“Then why does everyone look like they're attending a funeral?””
Nobody answered.
Darius took a sip of champagne.
“Look, Ethan. I think there's been a misunderstanding.””
“Then clear it up.””
“Your bride and I have been discussing a business opportunity.””
“With my company?””
“Potentially.””
“Using my signature?””
He glanced at Rochelle.
“Your attorney is making this unnecessarily complicated.””
Rochelle stepped forward.
“I'm going to ask you one question. Are you affiliated with Vantage Holdings LLC?””
Darius hesitated.
That hesitation told me more than his answer could have.
“Yes,” he finally said.
“What is your position?””
“Managing director.””
Rochelle nodded slowly.
“And are you aware that a document has been circulated purporting to authorize a change of control at Carter Development Group?””
Darius smiled again.
“I'm aware of several documents.””
“Did Ethan Carter sign them?””
Darius looked at me.
“Not personally, as far as I know.””
The words landed like a punch.
“As far as you know?””
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“Darius, stop talking.””
He pulled his arm away.
“Why? You told me he would have signed everything by now.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“You told him I had signed?””
She began shaking her head.
“Ethan, he's twisting my words.””
Darius laughed.
“Vanessa, don't do this.””
“Shut up!””
Her voice echoed through the hallway.
The photographer lowered his camera.
My father stepped between us.
“Enough. Someone needs to explain what is happening.””
Rochelle took out her phone.
“I've already contacted our corporate compliance team. They are checking the authorization and whether any related filings have been submitted.””
Darius's expression changed.
“You didn't need to involve the company.””
“That's not your decision,” Rochelle replied.
Vanessa looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“Ethan, can we please go somewhere alone?””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because I love you.””
I wanted to believe those words.
I wanted to believe the woman who had once sat beside me in a hospital waiting room when my father had surgery.
The woman who had cooked dinner for my mother on her birthday.
The woman who had held my hand when my first major construction project nearly bankrupted me.
But memories were not evidence of innocence.
And affection was not proof of loyalty.
“Then tell me the truth,” I said.
She lowered her head.
“Not here.””
“Here.””
She looked at Darius.
He shook his head almost imperceptibly.
I saw it.
A silent warning.
And I understood something else.
She wasn't afraid of me.
She was afraid of him.
“Vanessa,” I said quietly, “what does Darius have on you?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Nothing.””
“Then why are you looking at him before answering every question?””
Darius stepped forward.
“This is getting ridiculous. The wedding is supposed to begin.””
I turned toward him.
“You seem very interested in making sure I get married today.””
He gave a short laugh.
“Obviously. I'm here to celebrate.””
“Then celebrate somewhere else.””
His jaw tightened.
“You don't understand the situation you're walking into.””
Rochelle immediately raised her phone.
“Repeat that.””
Darius looked at her.
“What?””
“Exactly what you just said.””
He shook his head.
“I'm not speaking to you.””
I stepped closer.
“What situation?””
He stared at me for several seconds.
Then he smiled again.
“Ask your future wife what happened to her previous fiancé.””
The hallway went silent.
Vanessa's face turned white.
I looked at her.
“Previous fiancé?””
She closed her eyes.
Darius adjusted his cufflinks.
“Interesting, isn't it?””
“Vanessa?””
She whispered, “He was nobody.””
Darius laughed.
“Nobody? That's not what you told me.””
I felt my stomach turn.
“Who was he?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Ethan, please. That was years ago.””
“What happened?””
She looked at me.
Then she said, “He died.””
My father stepped closer.
“Good Lord.””
I stared at her.
“Died how?””
“In an accident.””
Darius nodded.
“Very unfortunate.””
Rochelle's expression became serious.
“What's his name?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
Darius did.
“Marcus Reed.””
I looked at Rochelle.
She was already typing something into her phone.
“Was Marcus involved in business?”” she asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Darius gave a quiet laugh.
“That's not entirely accurate.””
“Stop it!”” Vanessa shouted.
He ignored her.
“Marcus worked with a small investment firm. He and Vanessa were engaged. Then he discovered some irregularities in a company account.””
My skin prickled.
“What irregularities?””
Darius shrugged.
“That's old history.””
Rochelle stepped closer.
“Why would his death be relevant to this transaction?””
“Because,” Darius said, “Marcus was the first man who tried to stop Vanessa from becoming involved with Vantage Holdings.””
Vanessa slapped him.
The sound cracked through the hallway.
Darius touched his cheek.
“You really shouldn't have done that.””
She backed away.
For the first time, she looked genuinely terrified.
I turned toward her.
“Are you involved in this company?””
She shook her head.
“Not anymore.””
“Not anymore?””
She covered her mouth.
I waited.
Then she whispered, “I used to work there.””
Darius laughed.
“Don't forget your title.””
She glared at him.
“Shut up.””
“Director of acquisitions,” he said.
“A very talented one.””
My mind began connecting the pieces.
The unusual requests.
The questions about my properties.
The documents she had asked me to sign.
The sudden insistence that we combine our financial lives before the wedding.
It hadn't been romance.
It had been research.
Rochelle's phone rang.
She answered.
“Grant speaking.””
She listened.
Then her expression changed.
“What do you mean the filing was submitted?””
I looked at her.
She raised one finger, asking me to wait.
“Was it accepted?””
Another pause.
“Send me the confirmation immediately.””
She ended the call.
“Ethan, we have a problem.””
“What?””
“The state filing system received an application this morning identifying Vantage Holdings as the new controlling member of one of your subsidiary companies.””
My chest tightened.
“Using what?””
“A signed authorization and supporting documents.””
I stared at her.
“Is it valid?””
“We don't know yet. But we need to act immediately.””
Vanessa began crying again.
“I didn't know he would do this today.””
Darius turned sharply.
“Vanessa!””
She looked at him.
“You told me the documents were only for review!””
He stared at her.
Then he laughed.
“Don't pretend you didn't know what we were doing.””
My father moved beside me.
“Son, we're leaving.””
I nodded.
But before I could move, Darius said something that stopped me.
“Go ahead, Ethan. Cancel the wedding. But don't forget that your mother already signed.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“What did you say?””
He smiled.
“Ask your mother.””
I turned toward the ballroom.
My mother was standing beside the first row.
Her royal-blue dress shimmered beneath the lights.
She looked confused.
And suddenly, I remembered the document Vanessa had brought to our house two weeks earlier.
She had told my mother it was an authorization for the wedding venue to arrange transportation for elderly relatives.
My mother had signed it.
I felt cold all over.
“Mom!”” I called.
She hurried toward us.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
I held her shoulders.
“Did Vanessa ask you to sign something two weeks ago?””
My mother frowned.
“Yes. Some paperwork for the wedding.””
“What paperwork?””
“I don't remember exactly.””
“Did it have anything to do with the company?””
Her expression changed.
Then she looked at Vanessa.
“I thought it was just an authorization.””
Rochelle immediately asked, “Do you have a copy?””
My mother shook her head.
“No. Vanessa took it.””
Darius smiled.
“Then perhaps everyone should calm down.””
Rochelle turned toward him.
“Not another word.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She was trembling.
“Tell me what my mother signed.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, my phone rang.
It was the corporate compliance director.
I answered.
“Ethan, we found another document,” he said urgently.
“What document?””
“An authorization signed by your mother. It grants a third party limited authority over the family trust that owns the land beneath your parents' home.””
I looked at my mother.
She covered her mouth.
May you like
Then the compliance director continued.
“Ethan, there's something else. The witness signature on that document belongs to someone who died four years ago.””
