Amused

Chapter 9: The Heir Who Stayed In The Shadows

The photograph slipped slightly in Brandon’s hand.

Not because it was heavy.

Because the truth behind it was.

For twenty-eight years, everyone had searched for the person who destroyed the Sterling family.

They searched through old documents.

They searched through financial records.

They searched through the people who disappeared.

But nobody had searched for the person who stayed.

The person who stood beside them.

The person who offered help.

The person who gained their trust.

Phoebe stared at the photograph.

Her face had lost all expression.

“No.””

The word came quietly.

Almost like she was trying to convince herself.

“No.””

Richard looked at her.

“Phoebe.””

She shook her head.

“You’re wrong.””

Richard said nothing.

“You have to be wrong.””

Brandon looked between them.

“Who is it?””

Phoebe didn’t answer.

Her silence was enough to make everyone afraid.

“Phoebe.””

She looked at him.

Her eyes were filled with something Brandon had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear for herself.

Fear because the person she trusted had betrayed her.

“The person in that picture…”

She swallowed.

“That’s Adrian Vale.””

The name meant nothing to Brandon.

But it meant everything to Phoebe.

Vanessa looked confused.

“Who is Adrian Vale?””

Phoebe stared at the photograph.

“He was my father’s closest advisor.””

A pause.

“He was the person who helped me rebuild this hotel after my father died.””

Richard nodded.

“Because he needed to stay close.””

Phoebe looked at him.

“You knew?””

Richard lowered his eyes.

“I suspected.””

Brandon’s expression changed.

“You suspected and said nothing?””

Richard accepted the anger.

“I was trying to find proof.””

“For twenty-eight years?””

Richard looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer was painful because it was honest.

Brandon turned away.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had an explanation.

But everyone had still kept him in the dark.

Phoebe took the photograph from his hand.

Her fingers trembled.

“I trusted him.””

Richard’s voice was quiet.

“I know.””

“He was there when my father died.””

“Yes.””

“He helped me run the company.””

“Yes.””

She looked up.

“He knew everything.””

Richard nodded.

“And he used that.””

The lobby felt colder.

Brandon looked toward the entrance.

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

That silence immediately told him.

Something was wrong.

“Where is Adrian Vale?””

Marcus checked his phone.

Then looked at Phoebe.

“We need to talk privately.””

“No.””

Phoebe’s voice was firm.

“Not anymore.””

Marcus hesitated.

Then nodded.

“He left the hotel twenty minutes ago.””

Brandon frowned.

“How?””

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

“He used an executive access card.””

Phoebe’s eyes narrowed.

“Whose card?””

Marcus looked down.

“Yours.””

The answer was almost too perfect.

Someone had always been one step ahead.

Someone had always known where they were going.

Someone had always known what they would find.

Brandon looked at Vanessa.

She was standing quietly now.

Not because she had nothing to say.

Because she finally understood the scale of everything.

Her father was not the center of the story.

He was only a piece.

And Adrian Vale was the person who had been moving the pieces.

Richard looked at Evelyn.

“We need to get you somewhere safe.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked at Brandon.

“I spent twenty-eight years running.””

Her voice was calm.

“I’m not running anymore.””

Brandon looked at her.

A part of him wanted to reject her.

To tell her she had no right to return after all these years.

But another part of him—the child who waited by the window—wanted answers.

“Why did you leave?””

Evelyn looked at him.

The question she had feared.

The question she knew would come.

“Because Daniel found out about Adrian.””

Phoebe froze.

“What?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Your father discovered Adrian wasn’t helping the family.””

She looked at the hotel.

“He was slowly taking control.””

Brandon listened.

“Daniel confronted him.””

Richard continued.

“And Adrian realized Daniel knew too much.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“That night changed everything.””

“What happened?””

She looked at Brandon.

“Your father tried to expose him.””

A pause.

“But Adrian had already prepared.””

Brandon’s hands tightened.

“He made it look like Daniel had stolen company documents.””

Phoebe looked shocked.

“My father would never.””

“I know.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“That’s why he was dangerous to Adrian.””

Richard added:

“Daniel was the only person who could prove Adrian was not a loyal advisor.””

Brandon looked at the photograph.

“So what happened to my father?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“He was killed.””

The words were simple.

But they destroyed something inside Brandon.

Even though he had suspected.

Even though he had spent years wondering.

Hearing it made it real.

His father had not left.

He had not abandoned him.

He had been taken away.

Brandon looked down.

For years, he had carried the pain of being unwanted.

Now he carried a different pain.

Knowing he had been loved.

And knowing that love had been stolen.

Phoebe stepped closer.

“I’m sorry.””

Brandon looked at her.

“You knew he was in danger.””

“I knew something was wrong.””

“But you didn’t know enough.””

“No.””

Her honesty hurt.

“But I should have looked harder.””

For once, Phoebe Sterling—the woman everyone saw as untouchable—looked broken.

“I spent years building this hotel.””

Her voice lowered.

“But I failed to protect the people who mattered.””

Brandon didn’t respond.

Because he understood regret.

Then Vanessa’s phone rang.

Everyone looked.

She glanced at the screen.

Her face changed.

“It’s him.””

Brandon looked at her.

“Adrian?””

She nodded.

Nobody spoke.

Phoebe motioned.

“Answer.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then accepted.

“Hello?””

A calm male voice answered.

“Vanessa.””

She looked around.

“You knew?””

A pause.

“Yes.””

Her face tightened.

“You knew everything?””

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked her.

“Then why?””

Adrian sighed.

“Because you were never supposed to be involved.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

“Vanessa, listen to me.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You used my family.””

A pause.

“You used me.””

Adrian became quiet.

Then:

“I protected you.””

She shook her head.

“You protected yourself.””

Brandon watched her.

For the first time, Vanessa sounded like someone who finally understood.

Adrian continued.

“You don’t know what Phoebe would do if she discovered the truth.””

Phoebe stepped closer.

“Adrian.””

The voice on the phone stopped.

Everyone heard the change.

Fear.

“Phoebe.””

She spoke calmly.

“You have spent twenty-eight years hiding.””

A pause.

“It’s over.””

Adrian laughed softly.

“No.””

The sound made everyone uncomfortable.

“You still don’t understand.””

Phoebe frowned.

“What?””

“You think finding me means you found the truth.””

Brandon looked at the phone.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian answered.

“It means I wasn’t the only person hiding something.””

Silence.

Phoebe’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“Ask Brandon why his birth records were changed.””

Everyone looked at Brandon.

His heart stopped.

“What?””

Adrian continued.

“Ask him why his father never told him who his real mother was.””

Evelyn went pale.

Brandon looked at her.

“What is he talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Adrian laughed.

“You thought I was the villain because I wanted the hotel.””

A pause.

“But the truth is much bigger.””

Phoebe stepped forward.

“Where are you?””

No answer.

Instead, Adrian said:

“Brandon.””

The sound of his name from Adrian’s mouth felt wrong.

“You’ve spent your whole life searching for your family.””

A pause.

“But you never asked the most important question.””

Brandon’s voice was cold.

“What question?””

Adrian replied:

“Why did your parents hide you under another name?””

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Brandon slowly turned toward Evelyn.

His mother looked away.

And that was when he knew.

There was another secret.

One nobody had told him.

Not Richard.

Not Phoebe.

Not even his mother.

“Mom.””

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Brandon…”

His voice shook.

“What was my real name?””

The silence was unbearable.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“The name your father gave you…”

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

“Wasn’t Hayes.””

Brandon waited.

And the answer changed everything.

“Your real name…”

May you like

A pause.

“Is Brandon Sterling.””
