Chapter 3: The Video That Changed Everything

The words echoed through the executive office.

“We found the video.””

Vanessa’s face went completely still.

For the first time since she entered the Sterling Grand Hotel, she had no immediate response.

No sharp comment.

No sarcastic smile.

No confident explanation.

Only silence.

Brandon noticed.

And that silence frightened him more than any accusation could have.

The head of security, Marcus Reed, stepped inside holding a tablet in his hand. He was a tall man with a calm expression, the kind of person who rarely showed emotion because his job required him to observe everything.

Behind him stood Elena Parker, the hotel’s director of guest relations.

She looked nervous.

Not because of Phoebe.

Because of what she had discovered.

Phoebe gestured toward the tablet.

“Show us.””

Marcus nodded.

He placed the tablet on the desk and opened a video file.

Everyone gathered around.

Vanessa stayed where she was.

“I don’t understand why everyone is acting like I did something terrible,” she said.

Nobody answered.

The video began playing.

At first, it showed the Sterling Grand Hotel lobby from a security camera angle.

The timestamp appeared in the corner.

Three weeks earlier.

Brandon leaned closer.

“What is this?””

Marcus looked at him.

“Just watch.””

The footage showed Vanessa entering the lobby.

She was wearing a designer coat and carrying the same confidence she had displayed tonight.

She walked directly toward the reception desk.

A young receptionist stood up.

“Good afternoon, Ms. Crawford.””

Vanessa smiled.

“Finally. Someone who remembers me.””

The receptionist looked uncomfortable.

“How may I assist you?””

Vanessa placed a handbag on the counter.

“I need the presidential suite reserved for Friday night.””

The receptionist checked the computer.

“I’m sorry, Ms. Crawford. That suite has already been reserved by another guest.””

Vanessa’s expression changed instantly.

“Excuse me?””

“I can offer another luxury suite—”

“No.””

Her voice became colder.

“I said the presidential suite.””

The receptionist swallowed.

“I apologize, but the reservation has already been confirmed.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Do you know who I am?””

Brandon closed his eyes.

He already knew where this was going.

The video continued.

“I’m engaged to the general manager of this hotel,” Vanessa said.

“Do you really think you can tell me no?””

The receptionist looked toward her colleagues.

“I’m sorry, but Mr. Hayes does not change confirmed guest reservations without approval.””

Vanessa laughed.

“Then maybe he needs to learn who matters here.””

Phoebe watched without moving.

The video continued.

Vanessa pulled out her phone.

“Fine. I’ll handle this myself.””

She walked away.

The screen went black.

Then another clip appeared.

One week later.

Another employee.

Another complaint.

Another moment where Vanessa used Brandon’s name to demand special treatment.

The room became quieter with every second.

Brandon looked at Vanessa.

“You told me you barely came to the hotel.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I visited you.””

“No.””

His voice was low.

“You came here and used my position.””

She looked offended.

“I was your fiancée.””

“That doesn’t give you authority.””

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Authority? You’re really using that word?””

Phoebe looked at her.

“Yes.””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“You’re acting like I tried to steal something.””

Phoebe remained calm.

“You used someone else’s reputation to control people who were afraid to challenge you.””

“That’s not true.””

Elena finally spoke.

“Ms. Crawford…”

Vanessa looked at her.

“What?””

Elena hesitated.

“I was one of those employees.””

Vanessa stared.

Elena continued.

“After the suite incident, you told me that if I wanted to keep my job, I should learn who deserved better service.””

Brandon looked shocked.

“Elena, why didn’t you tell me?””

She lowered her eyes.

“Because she said you already knew.””

The room went silent.

Brandon looked at Vanessa.

“You told her I approved this?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Brandon stepped back.

The woman he thought he knew suddenly looked like a stranger.

“How long?””

Vanessa frowned.

“What?””

“How long have you been doing this?””

Her expression hardened.

“Don’t make me the villain because you’re embarrassed.””

Brandon stared.

“Embarrassed?””

“Yes.””

She pointed toward Phoebe.

“You’re standing here trying to impress her.””

Phoebe’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Vanessa continued.

“You always wanted her approval. That’s the truth.””

Brandon looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

“You built this hotel for her. You worked every holiday. You missed dinners. You canceled vacations.””

Her voice became sharper.

“And for what? So she could walk in whenever she wanted and remind you that you were just an employee?””

Phoebe said nothing.

Because she understood something.

Vanessa wasn’t defending herself anymore.

She was revealing herself.

Brandon shook his head.

“That’s not why I worked here.””

“Then why?””

He looked toward the window.

“Because someone believed in me.””

The answer surprised Vanessa.

Brandon continued.

“When I started here, I was twenty-six years old. I had no connections. No wealthy family. No famous name.””

He looked at Phoebe.

“She gave me a chance.””

Phoebe looked away briefly.

A rare sign of emotion.

Vanessa noticed.

And she hated it.

“You always admired her.””

Brandon turned back.

“I respected her.””

“Same thing.””

“No.””

His voice became firmer.

“It’s not.””

The silence that followed was broken by Marcus.

“There’s more.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus tapped the tablet.

Another video loaded.

This time, the date was different.

Yesterday.

Brandon’s face changed.

“Yesterday?””

Marcus nodded.

The footage showed Vanessa entering a private hallway.

The executive floor.

The area where only authorized employees could enter.

Brandon looked confused.

“How did she get access?””

Marcus answered.

“Your security code.””

Everyone turned toward Brandon.

He looked stunned.

“My code?””

Marcus nodded.

“Someone used your access information.””

Vanessa immediately spoke.

“I don’t know anything about that.””

Marcus played the video.

Vanessa appeared on screen again.

She walked toward a locked office door.

Then she looked directly at the camera.

She knew it was there.

She smiled.

Brandon felt his stomach tighten.

“She knew.””

Phoebe looked at him.

“Yes.””

The video continued.

Vanessa opened the office door.

She entered.

Five minutes later, she left carrying a folder.

A folder identical to the one Phoebe had placed on the desk.

Brandon stared.

“What was she taking?””

Marcus looked at Phoebe.

“That’s the part we’re still investigating.””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“I didn’t steal anything.””

Phoebe looked at her.

“Then what was inside the folder?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Brandon looked at her.

“Vanessa.””

She finally snapped.

“Fine!””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa’s carefully controlled image cracked.

“You want the truth?””

She pointed at Brandon.

“You never understood what it took to be beside someone like you.””

Brandon stared.

“What?””

“I was always introduced as ‘Brandon Hayes’ fiancée.””

Her voice trembled with anger.

“Do you know what that feels like?””

Phoebe watched silently.

Vanessa continued.

“Everyone knew your name. Everyone respected you. Everyone cared about your work.””

She touched her diamond ring.

“I wanted people to see me too.””

Brandon’s expression softened slightly.

“Vanessa…”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t get to act disappointed.””

She looked at Phoebe.

“You have no idea what it’s like to stand next to someone powerful and disappear.””

Phoebe’s expression changed.

Because that sentence sounded less like an excuse.

And more like a confession.

But before she could respond, Marcus’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

A few seconds passed.

His face changed.

“Are you sure?””

Everyone watched him.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Ms. Sterling…”

Phoebe looked at him.

“What is it?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he placed the phone on the desk.

“The folder Vanessa took yesterday wasn’t the only thing removed.””

Brandon frowned.

“What else?””

Marcus looked directly at Phoebe.

“Someone accessed the hotel’s ownership records.””

The room went cold.

Phoebe stepped forward.

“Ownership records?””

Marcus nodded.

“And whoever accessed them wasn’t looking for guest information.””

A pause.

“They were looking for something connected to the Sterling family.””

Phoebe’s eyes narrowed.

“What exactly?””

Marcus looked at the tablet.

Then at Vanessa.

“The original inheritance documents.””

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood the same thing.

This was no longer about champagne.

No longer about a rude guest.

Someone had been searching for a secret.

And the person standing closest to that secret was Vanessa Crawford.

Then Brandon’s phone buzzed.

He looked down.

A new message appeared from an unknown number.

May you like

Only one sentence was written.

*“Ask Phoebe why she never told you who your real family is.””*
