Amused

Chapter 6: The Daughter Who Knew Too Much

Vanessa lowered the phone slowly.

Her hand was shaking.

Nobody spoke.

The room had already held too many impossible truths that night.

First, the champagne.

Then the hidden files.

Then the secret family connection.

Now this.

Richard Crawford had known.

He had known everything.

Brandon watched Vanessa carefully.

“Put him on speaker.””

Her eyes moved toward him.

“What?””

“Put him on speaker.””

Vanessa tightened her grip on the phone.

“I don’t think that’s a good idea.””

Brandon’s expression changed.

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because he’s angry.””

Phoebe stepped closer.

“That is exactly why we need to hear him.””

Vanessa looked at everyone in the room.

For the first time, she looked trapped.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Trapped.

Slowly, she pressed the speaker button.

“Dad?””

The voice came through immediately.

“Vanessa, where are you?””

Richard Crawford sounded older than Brandon remembered.

But the authority was still there.

The same confident voice.

The same voice that had guided boardrooms and closed billion-dollar deals.

“I’m at the Sterling Grand Hotel.””

Silence.

Then Richard spoke.

“Leave.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa frowned.

“Dad?””

“Leave immediately.””

His voice became sharper.

“Do not talk to Phoebe Sterling. Do not show anyone that file. Do not answer any questions.””

Brandon looked at Phoebe.

She understood immediately.

Richard was afraid.

Vanessa looked confused.

“I don’t understand.””

Richard lowered his voice.

“You weren’t supposed to find out.””

Brandon stepped closer.

“Find out what?””

The voice on the phone stopped.

A long silence followed.

Then Richard asked:

“Who is that?””

Brandon looked at the phone.

“My name is Brandon Hayes.””

Another silence.

Then Richard said something that made everyone freeze.

“I know exactly who you are.””

Brandon’s face changed.

“You know me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Brandon’s voice became harder.

“Answer me.””

Phoebe watched him.

She knew that anger.

It was the anger of someone whose entire identity had just been questioned.

Richard finally spoke.

“I knew your parents.””

The room became silent.

Brandon closed his eyes briefly.

“My parents.””

“Yes.””

“What happened to them?””

No answer.

“Richard.””

Brandon’s voice shook.

“What happened to my parents?””

Vanessa looked toward the phone.

“Dad…”

Richard sighed.

“Vanessa, hang up.””

“No.””

Her answer surprised everyone.

Richard became quiet.

“I said hang up.””

For years, Vanessa had followed her father’s instructions.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, she had lost everything she believed she controlled.

“No,” she repeated.

Her voice became stronger.

“You lied to me too.””

A silence followed.

Brandon looked at her.

Phoebe looked at her.

Even Vanessa seemed surprised by her own words.

Richard’s voice softened.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I spent my entire life believing we were better than everyone else.””

Her eyes moved toward Brandon.

“I believed you built everything because you were smarter than everyone.””

She looked at Phoebe.

“I believed our family deserved more.””

Her voice cracked.

“But you knew.””

Richard said nothing.

“You knew about him.””

A pause.

“You knew Brandon was connected to the Sterling family.””

The silence was the answer.

Brandon looked at Phoebe.

Then at Vanessa.

“What did he know?””

Nobody responded.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“My father knew who you were.””

Brandon felt a strange emptiness.

Not anger.

Not shock.

Something deeper.

Betrayal.

“He knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I don’t know.””

Richard suddenly spoke.

“Vanessa, you don’t understand what happened.””

She laughed bitterly.

“No.””

She looked at the phone.

“I don’t.””

Her voice became quiet.

“But I’m starting to.””

Phoebe stepped toward the phone.

“Richard.””

The voice immediately changed.

“Phoebe.””

They both went silent.

Twenty-eight years of history existed between those two names.

Phoebe continued.

“Where are the original documents?””

Richard didn’t answer.

“Where are they?””

“You don’t want to know.””

Brandon’s expression hardened.

“That’s not your decision.””

Richard sighed.

“You sound like your father.””

Brandon froze.

“What did you say?””

“You sound like Daniel.””

The name hit him.

His father’s name.

Spoken by the man connected to his disappearance.

“What happened to Daniel Sterling?””

Richard remained quiet.

Then:

“He found the truth.””

Brandon stepped forward.

“What truth?””

“The truth about who betrayed him.””

Phoebe’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Brandon looked at the phone.

“Was it my grandfather?””

“No.””

“Your uncle?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

The line remained silent.

Then Richard said:

“Someone closer.””

Everyone exchanged looks.

Someone closer.

Someone inside.

Someone trusted.

Phoebe’s face changed.

Because she understood the meaning.

Brandon noticed.

“Who?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he said:

“Phoebe, you should have left this buried.””

The call ended.

The room remained frozen.

Nobody moved.

Then Brandon slowly looked at Phoebe.

“He knows you.””

“Yes.””

“He knows my family.””

“Yes.””

“He knows what happened.””

“Yes.””

His voice became quieter.

“And you don’t?””

Phoebe looked hurt.

“I know pieces.””

“Pieces.””

Brandon laughed softly.

“My entire life is pieces.””

He walked toward the window.

The city stretched below them.

Millions of people living ordinary lives.

While his entire past had been hidden.

Phoebe approached slowly.

“Brandon.””

He didn’t turn.

“When I was twelve, everyone told me my parents left.””

His voice was low.

“I spent years wondering what I did wrong.””

Phoebe listened.

“I thought maybe I wasn’t enough.””

His hand tightened.

“Maybe they wanted a different life.””

“They didn’t.””

“I know that now.””

He turned.

“But I needed to hear it twenty years ago.””

Phoebe looked down.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology was simple.

But it carried years of guilt.

Brandon looked at her.

“I don’t know how to feel about you right now.””

Phoebe nodded.

“I understand.””

Before anyone could respond, Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered quickly.

“Yes?””

His expression changed.

“Are you sure?””

Everyone watched.

Marcus walked toward the desk.

“The archive team found another hidden compartment.””

Phoebe looked at him.

“Where?””

“In the old family office.””

Her expression changed.

“The office that was sealed after my father’s death?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

Brandon looked confused.

“Why was it sealed?””

Phoebe hesitated.

“Because that was the last place Daniel Sterling was seen.””

The room became silent.

Marcus continued.

“They found something inside.””

“What?””

He looked at Brandon.

“A letter.””

Brandon frowned.

“To who?””

Marcus took a breath.

“Your mother.””

Nobody spoke.

Phoebe’s eyes widened.

“Bring it here.””

Marcus shook his head.

“There’s a problem.””

“What problem?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“The letter was opened.””

“When?””

“We don’t know.””

“Who opened it?””

Marcus looked at the security footage.

“We’re checking.””

Brandon stepped forward.

“Show me.””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he turned the tablet around.

The footage appeared.

A person entered the old family office.

The timestamp showed:

Two days earlier.

The figure walked toward the hidden compartment.

Opened it.

Removed the letter.

Then turned toward the camera.

The face was partially visible.

But it was enough.

Brandon stopped breathing.

Phoebe covered her mouth.

Vanessa stepped backward.

Because the person in the video was not a stranger.

It was someone they all knew.

Someone who had been standing beside them.

Someone who had spent years protecting the hotel.

Marcus whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

The footage froze.

And on the screen was the face of the person who had opened Daniel Sterling’s final letter.

Richard Crawford.

But the timestamp proved something impossible.

He had opened it two days ago.

Long after everyone believed he was unaware of the hidden documents.

Brandon stared at the screen.

Then his phone buzzed.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*“Your mentor didn’t hide the truth from you. He hid the truth about you.””*
