Chapter 1: The Name On The Phone
The champagne hit her face before anyone even knew who she was.
And the woman who threw it smiled proudly, unaware that she had just humiliated the person who held the power to decide the future of everyone inside the Sterling Grand Hotel.
The crystal chandelier above the lobby reflected thousands of tiny lights across the polished marble floor. Waiters moved gracefully between guests wearing designer suits and expensive watches. A pianist played a soft melody near the grand staircase, creating the illusion that the entire evening had been carefully designed to be flawless.
The Sterling Grand Hotel was the kind of place where people lowered their voices without being asked.
A place where celebrities stayed in private suites.
A place where business deals worth millions were signed behind closed doors.
A place where reputation meant everything.
And that was exactly why Vanessa Crawford believed she owned the room.
She stood in the center of the lobby wearing a sparkling ruby-red gown that looked like it belonged on a magazine cover. Her perfectly styled hair fell over her shoulders, and the enormous diamond ring on her left hand caught the attention of everyone nearby.
She loved attention.
Especially when people knew her name.
“Do you know who I am?”” Vanessa asked sharply.
The woman standing in front of her said nothing.
She was dressed simply in a cream-colored blouse, dark trousers, and a modest beige coat. Her blonde hair was pulled back neatly, and she carried a small leather handbag that looked completely ordinary compared to the luxury surrounding her.
She had been standing near the reception desk for less than five minutes.
She had not interrupted anyone.
She had not caused trouble.
But Vanessa had decided she did not belong.
“You’re still standing there?”” Vanessa said, looking her up and down.
“I already told you to move.””
The blonde woman calmly looked toward the reception desk.
“I’m waiting for someone,” she replied.
Her voice was quiet.
Not weak.
Just calm.
That seemed to irritate Vanessa even more.
“Waiting for someone?”” Vanessa repeated with a laugh.
“In this lobby?””
Several guests nearby turned their heads.
The woman didn’t respond.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“People come here because they pay for elegance,” she said.
“This isn’t some neighborhood café where anyone can walk in.””
The blonde woman finally looked at her.
“I’m not bothering anyone.””
Vanessa’s lips curved into a cold smile.
“That’s not for you to decide.””
A few people exchanged uncomfortable glances, but nobody stepped forward. They saw Vanessa’s expensive dress. They saw the diamond ring.
They saw someone who looked important.
And they saw a woman who looked ordinary.
Appearances made the decision for them.
Vanessa lifted a champagne glass from a passing tray.
“Maybe you need a reminder.””
The blonde woman’s expression barely changed.
“Excuse me?””
Vanessa tilted her head.
“My fiancé runs this hotel,” she said proudly.
“Do you really think someone like you can stand here and make demands?””
The woman looked at the diamond ring.
Then back at Vanessa.
“I didn’t make any demands.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Of course you didn’t.””
The next second, the entire lobby went silent.
Because Vanessa threw the champagne.
The golden liquid flew through the air.
It struck the woman directly in the face.
The music stopped.
The conversations disappeared.
Champagne dripped from her blonde hair. It ran down her cheeks and soaked into her cream blouse.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Everyone waited for anger.
For shouting.
For tears.
But the woman simply stood there.
Still.
Silent.
Vanessa smiled.
“There,” she said.
“Now maybe you understand.””
A waiter quickly approached with a nervous expression.
“Miss Crawford, should I—”
Vanessa waved him away.
“No need. She’ll leave.””
The blonde woman slowly reached into her handbag.
Several guests expected her to pull out a phone and call security.
Instead, she removed a small white handkerchief.
She gently wiped the champagne from her face.
Her hands never shook.
Her expression never changed.
Vanessa frowned.
“What’s wrong?”” she asked.
“Nothing to say?””
The woman folded the handkerchief carefully.
“No.””
That simple answer made Vanessa uncomfortable.
People usually reacted to her.
They apologized.
They argued.
They tried to explain themselves.
This woman did none of those things.
She simply reached into her bag again.
This time, she took out her phone.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Oh, please. Are you going to complain?””
The blonde woman ignored her.
She unlocked the phone.
Scrolled through the contacts.
Stopped at one name.
Then pressed call.
Across the lobby, near the concierge desk, a man in a perfectly tailored black suit looked down at his phone.
Brandon Hayes had been speaking with two hotel executives when the ringtone interrupted him.
He almost ignored it.
Almost.
Then he saw the name on the screen.
His face changed instantly.
The confidence disappeared.
The color drained from his cheeks.
The caller ID displayed:
Phoebe Sterling.
His hand tightened around the phone.
One of the executives noticed.
“Mr. Hayes?”” he asked.
“Is everything okay?””
Brandon didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Vanessa noticed him staring at the screen.
Then she laughed.
“Seriously?””
The nearby guests looked between them.
Vanessa raised her voice.
“Brandon!””
The general manager looked up.
She smiled confidently.
“Why are you looking so nervous? Answer your phone.””
Brandon slowly looked across the lobby.
His eyes met the blonde woman’s.
The woman who had just been covered in champagne.
The woman who had not raised her voice once.
The woman who was waiting patiently.
Brandon’s breathing became heavier.
Because he knew exactly who she was.
He had seen her name on documents.
He had attended meetings where executives lowered their voices when discussing her.
He knew the power behind that quiet expression.
Vanessa stepped closer to him.
“Are you hearing me?”” she said.
“Why are you just standing there?””
Brandon didn’t move.
“Brandon?”” she repeated.
Still nothing.
The phone continued vibrating in his hand.
Finally, Brandon walked forward.
One step.
Then another.
The entire lobby watched as the general manager of the Sterling Grand Hotel crossed the marble floor.
Guests moved aside without understanding why.
Vanessa’s smile slowly faded.
“What are you doing?””
Brandon stopped in front of the blonde woman.
He was holding the unanswered phone.
She looked at him calmly.
“Answer it, Brandon.””
Her voice was soft.
Almost gentle.
But the entire lobby felt the weight behind it.
“Tell her who you really are.””
Brandon swallowed.
Vanessa stared at him.
“What is she talking about?””
He looked down.
Then back at the woman.
His fingers trembled slightly.
Finally, he spoke.
“I’m…”
The phone rang again.
Phoebe Sterling’s name glowed on the screen.
Brandon closed his eyes for a moment.
Then he whispered the words that made Vanessa’s confident expression disappear completely.
“I’m not the owner of this hotel.””
A confused silence spread through the lobby.
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
Brandon looked at the woman in front of him.
“She is.””
Every person nearby froze.
The blonde woman reached out and took her phone back.
Vanessa stared at her.
“No…”
Her voice became quieter.
“No, that’s impossible.””
The woman wiped the last drop of champagne from her sleeve.
Then she looked directly at Vanessa.
For the first time that night, there was something different in her eyes.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Just disappointment.
“I came here tonight because I wanted to see how my hotel was being represented when I wasn’t announced.””
She paused.
“And now I know.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Brandon lowered his head.
“Ms. Sterling…”
The woman looked at him.
“Brandon, before we discuss your position, there is something else I need to know.””
The lobby became completely silent.
She turned her gaze toward Vanessa.
“Why did my general manager’s fiancée believe she had the authority to throw champagne at a guest?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa’s phone suddenly buzzed.
She looked down.
A message appeared on the screen.
Her smile vanished.
Because the sender was her fiancé.

And the first line said:
*“Vanessa, we need to talk about the woman you just embarrassed.””*
