Amused

Chapter 4: The Family Secret Hidden In The Hotel

Brandon stared at the message on his phone.

For several seconds, he forgot how to breathe.

The room around him disappeared.

The voices.

The questions.

The tension.

Everything faded into the background.

Only those words remained.

*Ask Phoebe why she never told you who your real family is.*

His thumb hovered over the screen.

He read it again.

And again.

His mind searched for an explanation.

A cruel joke.

A threat.

A mistake.

Anything except the possibility that it was true.

“Brandon?””

Phoebe’s voice pulled him back.

He quickly locked his phone.

Too quickly.

But Phoebe noticed.

She had built an empire by noticing details other people missed.

“What happened?”” she asked.

“Nothing.””

The answer came too fast.

Marcus exchanged a glance with Elena.

Vanessa noticed too.

And despite everything that had happened, a small smile appeared on her face.

Because she saw an opening.

“What was that?””

Brandon looked at her.

“Nothing.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Really?””

Her voice was quieter now.

Almost curious.

“Because you looked terrified.””

Phoebe turned toward Brandon.

“Show me.””

He hesitated.

“Ms. Sterling…”

“Brandon.””

Her tone changed.

Not harsh.

Not angry.

Just firm.

“Show me.””

Slowly, he unlocked his phone and handed it to her.

Phoebe read the message.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Brandon noticed.

“You know something.””

Phoebe didn’t answer.

“Ms. Sterling.””

She looked away.

That silence hurt more than the message itself.

“You do know something.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Well.””

Everyone looked at her.

She gave a bitter laugh.

“Looks like I’m not the only one hiding things.””

Brandon ignored her.

His eyes stayed on Phoebe.

“How long?””

Phoebe placed the phone on the desk.

“Brandon…”

“How long have you known?””

The question was simple.

But the pain behind it wasn’t.

Phoebe walked toward the window.

The city lights reflected against the glass.

For the first time that night, she looked uncertain.

“I was hoping you would never find out this way.””

Brandon’s face tightened.

“Find out what?””

Phoebe closed her eyes briefly.

Then she turned around.

“The truth about your parents.””

The room became silent.

Vanessa’s expression changed.

Even she hadn’t expected that.

Brandon stared.

“My parents?””

Phoebe nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

He laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“What does this have to do with my parents?””

Phoebe looked at the floor.

“Your father worked here.””

Brandon froze.

“What?””

“Twenty-eight years ago.””

The words landed heavily.

“My father?””

Phoebe nodded.

“He was the hotel’s chief financial officer before my family owned the entire property.””

Brandon shook his head.

“No.””

“You didn’t know.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“I didn’t know because nobody told me.””

Phoebe accepted the accusation.

Because it was true.

“My father never mentioned this.””

“Because he didn’t know everything.””

Brandon stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Phoebe took a breath.

“It means your father was involved in a situation that changed the future of this hotel.””

Marcus slowly stepped back.

Elena looked confused.

Vanessa watched carefully.

“What situation?”” Brandon asked.

Phoebe looked at him.

“An ownership dispute.””

The words sounded ordinary.

But the way she said them made them feel dangerous.

“Before I inherited the hotel, there was another person who believed they had a claim to it.””

Brandon frowned.

“Who?””

Phoebe didn’t answer immediately.

That made it worse.

“Who?””

She finally spoke.

“My uncle.””

The room went quiet.

Brandon stared.

“Your uncle?””

“Yes.””

Phoebe walked back to the desk.

“My grandfather built this hotel. When he died, the company was supposed to pass to my father.””

She paused.

“But there were documents.””

“Documents saying what?””

“That my uncle believed he was the rightful successor.””

Brandon looked confused.

“What does this have to do with me?””

Phoebe looked at him.

“Your father discovered evidence that those documents had been manipulated.””

Brandon felt a chill.

“And?””

“And before he could reveal everything, he disappeared.””

Nobody moved.

The silence felt impossible.

Brandon whispered:

“Disappeared?””

Phoebe nodded.

“He left the city.””

“Why?””

“I don’t know.””

The answer surprised him.

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

For the first time, anger appeared in Phoebe’s eyes.

“I spent years trying to find him.””

Brandon looked at her.

“And my mother?””

Phoebe became quiet.

“Your mother knew.””

“Knew what?””

“That your father had discovered something dangerous.””

Brandon stepped backward.

His entire life suddenly felt like it had missing pages.

“You’re telling me my parents were connected to this hotel?””

“Yes.””

“And you knew?””

“Yes.””

The honesty made it hurt more.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Phoebe looked at him.

“Because when I met you, you were twenty-six years old and had just lost both your parents.””

Brandon’s jaw tightened.

“I was trying to survive.””

“I know.””

“I had nothing.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Phoebe’s voice softened.

“Because I saw someone who deserved a future.””

Brandon looked away.

The memory came back.

His first interview.

His old suit.

His nervous hands.

Phoebe sitting across from him.

Giving him a chance.

He had always believed it was because she saw his potential.

Now he wondered if there had been another reason.

“Did you hire me because of my father?””

Phoebe didn’t answer.

And that was enough.

Brandon’s expression changed.

“You did.””

“No.””

“Then why won’t you say it?””

“Because it wasn’t the only reason.””

“But it was one of them.””

Phoebe remained silent.

Brandon laughed quietly.

A painful laugh.

“So all these years…”

He looked around the office.

“All these years I thought I built my life.””

His eyes met hers.

“But maybe you were just protecting me.””

Phoebe stepped forward.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Her answer was barely a whisper.

“The people who destroyed your family.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed toward the folder.

“The inheritance documents.””

Phoebe turned.

Vanessa’s eyes moved between them.

“If those documents prove who owns what…”

She paused.

“Then someone accessing them makes sense.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Brandon looked at him.

“Why?””

Marcus answered.

“Because the original documents contain names.””

“What names?””

Marcus looked at Phoebe.

She didn’t stop him.

“The names of everyone involved in the ownership dispute.””

Brandon’s face changed.

“Everyone?””

Marcus nodded.

“Including the person who benefited from your parents disappearing.””

A heavy silence filled the room.

Vanessa looked at Phoebe.

“You know who it is.””

Phoebe didn’t answer.

But Brandon saw something.

Fear.

Not for herself.

For him.

“Who?””

Phoebe looked at him.

“Brandon…”

“Who?””

She slowly reached into the folder.

She removed an old photograph.

The picture was worn from time.

She placed it on the desk.

Brandon looked down.

The photo showed a group of people standing in front of the Sterling Grand Hotel decades earlier.

A younger Phoebe’s father.

Her uncle.

Hotel executives.

And a young couple standing near the edge.

Brandon recognized them instantly.

His parents.

His hand trembled.

“Where did you get this?””

Phoebe looked at the photograph.

“From the original company archives.””

Brandon stared.

Then he noticed something.

A man standing behind his father.

A man whose face was partly hidden.

But the name written on the back of the photo was clear.

He picked it up.

His eyes widened.

Because the name belonged to someone he knew.

Someone who had been beside him for years.

Someone who had guided his career.

Someone who had just been standing in this room.

Brandon slowly turned around.

His voice barely worked.

“Phoebe…”

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed at the photograph.

“This man…”

A pause.

“He’s alive.””

Phoebe’s expression changed.

“Brandon, what are you saying?””

He looked toward the door.

Toward the hallway outside.

Then back at the photograph.

“He’s the reason I got this job.””

Marcus frowned.

“Who?””

Brandon swallowed.

“The person who recommended me to you twenty-eight years later.””

The room went completely still.

Because the name he spoke next was the one nobody expected.

“My mentor.””

A second passed.

Then another.

And Phoebe whispered the name she had spent decades trying to uncover.

“Richard Crawford.””

May you like

Vanessa’s face turned white.

Because that was her father’s name.
