Amused

Chapter 5: The Father Behind The Betrayal

Nobody spoke.

Not for several seconds.

The name hung in the room like a shadow.

Richard Crawford.

Vanessa’s father.

Brandon’s mentor.

The man who had helped him enter the world of luxury hospitality.

The man who had always told him that loyalty mattered more than ambition.

The man whose advice had shaped Brandon’s entire career.

And now his name was connected to the darkest secret in the Sterling family history.

Brandon looked at Vanessa.

She looked back at him.

But for once, she had no sharp words.

No confident response.

No explanation.

Only fear.

“Your father,” Brandon whispered.

Vanessa swallowed.

“I don’t understand.””

Phoebe watched her carefully.

“You knew your father worked with my family.””

Vanessa looked confused.

“Of course I knew he worked in business.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

The room became tense.

Phoebe stepped closer.

“Did you know he was connected to this hotel before tonight?””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Brandon studied her face.

He had spent two years believing he knew every expression she had.

The proud smile.

The annoyed glance.

The playful laugh.

But this was different.

This was genuine fear.

“I swear,” Vanessa said, looking at him.

“I didn’t know.””

Brandon didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know what to believe anymore.

Marcus carefully picked up the old photograph.

“We need to verify this.””

Phoebe nodded.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Brandon.

“Mr. Hayes, are you certain this is Richard Crawford?””

Brandon stared at the picture.

“I’m certain.””

“How?””

Brandon took a slow breath.

“Because I’ve seen this man every month for the last six years.””

Nobody moved.

The irony was almost impossible to understand.

The person who had helped Brandon build his career had also been connected to the reason his family fell apart.

Phoebe looked toward the window.

“So Richard never disappeared.””

Brandon frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Phoebe turned around.

“When my uncle’s fraud was discovered, Richard Crawford vanished from the company records.””

She walked back to the desk.

“Everyone believed he left because he was afraid of being exposed.””

Brandon looked at the photograph.

“But he didn’t leave.””

“No.””

Phoebe’s voice became quieter.

“He changed his name.””

Brandon froze.

“What?””

“He removed himself from the records and started over.””

Marcus looked at the photo.

“So he could hide.””

Phoebe nodded.

“Exactly.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“My father isn’t a criminal.””

Everyone looked at her.

Her voice shook.

“You don’t know him.””

Phoebe studied her.

“I know what the evidence shows.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You know what you think happened decades ago.””

She pointed at the photograph.

“You don’t know what he went through.””

Brandon looked at her.

“You’re defending him?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation said more than words.

Brandon’s expression hardened.

“You are.””

Vanessa looked away.

“My father raised me.””

“And?””

“And I know him.””

Brandon laughed quietly.

“Do you?””

The question hurt.

Because it wasn’t an accusation.

It was doubt.

Vanessa looked at him.

“You think because of one picture, you know everything?””

Brandon held the photo.

“No.””

He paused.

“But I know something.””

“What?””

“That I spent my whole life believing my parents abandoned me.””

The room went silent.

Brandon’s voice became heavier.

“I was twelve years old when they disappeared.””

He looked down.

“Everyone told me they left because they wanted a new life.””

Phoebe lowered her eyes.

“But you knew that wasn’t true.””

“Yes.””

Brandon looked at her.

“You knew they were searching for answers.””

Phoebe nodded.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

His voice rose slightly.

“You suspected and said nothing?””

Phoebe accepted the anger.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Brandon stepped away.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me while they made decisions about my life without me.””

Nobody responded.

Because nobody could.

A knock interrupted the silence.

Everyone turned.

A young employee stood outside the office.

“Ms. Sterling?””

Phoebe looked at him.

“Yes?””

“We found something in the archive room.””

“What?””

The employee looked nervous.

“Another file.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“What kind of file?””

The employee glanced at Brandon.

“One with Mr. Hayes’ name on it.””

Brandon froze.

“My name?””

The employee nodded.

“It was hidden behind an old storage panel.””

Phoebe’s expression changed.

“Bring it here.””

A few minutes later, the file was placed on the desk.

It was old.

The edges were worn.

Dust covered the surface.

But one thing was clear.

Someone had deliberately hidden it.

Brandon stared at the label.

*BRANDON HAYES — CONFIDENTIAL*

His stomach tightened.

“I’ve never seen this before.””

Phoebe looked at Marcus.

“Open it.””

Marcus carefully removed the documents.

The first page was a hospital record.

Brandon’s face changed.

“What is that?””

Phoebe looked.

Then her expression became serious.

“It’s a birth record.””

The room froze.

Vanessa looked confused.

“Why would there be a birth record in hotel archives?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus continued reading.

Then stopped.

“Ms. Sterling…”

Phoebe looked at him.

“What?””

Marcus handed her the page.

She read it.

And her eyes widened.

Brandon noticed.

“What?””

Phoebe looked at him.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she was afraid the truth would hurt him.

“What does it say?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Brandon stepped forward.

“Phoebe.””

She finally spoke.

“Your name on this document…”

A pause.

“It’s not the name you were born with.””

The room went silent.

Brandon stared.

“What?””

Marcus looked down.

“The record shows your original surname was Sterling.””

Nobody moved.

The sound of the city outside suddenly felt distant.

Brandon shook his head.

“No.””

Phoebe looked at the document.

“It says your biological father was Daniel Sterling.””

Brandon’s face lost all color.

Daniel Sterling.

Phoebe’s father’s name.

The founder’s son.

The man who should have inherited the hotel.

The man who had died years before Brandon ever knew this world.

“No.””

Brandon took a step back.

“That’s impossible.””

Phoebe looked at him.

“I didn’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I’m telling you the truth.””

He laughed.

A broken sound.

“So what?””

His eyes filled with confusion.

“I’m your family?””

Phoebe’s voice softened.

“Yes.””

The word changed everything.

Vanessa stared between them.

“No…”

She whispered.

“No, that doesn’t make sense.””

Brandon looked at Phoebe.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Phoebe looked devastated.

“Because I found this file only once before.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

His expression hardened.

“You knew?””

“I found evidence that you might be connected to my family.””

“And you still hired me?””

Phoebe nodded.

“Because I needed to know the truth.””

Brandon looked hurt.

“So I was an investigation.””

“No.””

Phoebe stepped forward.

“You were a person who deserved answers.””

Before Brandon could respond, Vanessa’s phone suddenly rang.

Everyone turned.

She looked down.

The caller ID appeared.

*Dad*

Her face changed instantly.

Phoebe noticed.

“Answer it.””

Vanessa hesitated.

The phone kept ringing.

Brandon watched her.

“Why are you afraid to answer?””

She looked at him.

Then at the screen.

Finally, she accepted the call.

She lifted the phone to her ear.

“Dad?””

A deep male voice came through.

Even from a distance, everyone could hear the anger.

Vanessa’s face slowly changed.

“What?””

A pause.

“No, that’s not possible.””

Another pause.

Then she looked directly at Brandon.

Her eyes widened.

“What did you say?””

The room waited.

Vanessa’s hand began trembling.

She lowered the phone slightly.

“My father says…”

Nobody moved.

She looked at Phoebe.

Then at Brandon.

“He says Brandon Hayes was never supposed to find those documents.””

A cold silence followed.

May you like

Then Vanessa whispered the final words.

“Because Richard Crawford buried the truth for twenty-eight years.””
