Amused

Chapter 9: The Signature That Was Never Mine

The officer’s words didn’t make sense.

Not because they were complicated.

Because they were impossible.

I stared at the folder in his hands.

At the photograph of Emma.

At the signature beneath the report.

My signature.

A signature I had never written.

A signature someone had forged.

I looked at the officer.

“That’s not mine.””

The officer remained calm.

“Mr. Carter, we understand you may be surprised.””

“No.””

My voice sharpened.

“You don’t understand.””

I pointed at the paper.

“I have never filed a missing child report.””

The officer looked down.

“This document was submitted three days ago.””

Three days.

My mind raced.

Three days ago, I was planning flowers.

Tasting cake.

Choosing the music for a wedding that no longer existed.

Three days ago, I thought my biggest problem was whether Vanessa would like the final arrangements.

Now I was standing in a ballroom discovering someone had created a legal record that made me look like a criminal.

Emily stepped closer.

“Daniel, this is a setup.””

The officer looked at her.

“Ma’am, we’ll need your information as well.””

Emily’s face tightened.

“I understand.””

I looked at her.

She looked exhausted.

But for the first time since she returned, I saw something different.

Determination.

She wasn’t running anymore.

Not from me.

Not from the truth.

Not from anyone.

The officer opened the folder.

“Mr. Carter, the report states that Emma Carter disappeared while under your care.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“That is not true.””

The officer looked at the page.

“According to this report, you discovered that the child existed, attempted to take custody, and then lost contact with her.””

I stared at him.

“That’s completely fabricated.””

“I understand that’s your position.””

“My position?””

I stepped forward.

“My daughter was hidden from me for years.””

The officer’s expression softened slightly.

“I’m not saying you’re guilty of anything.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked toward the ballroom doors.

“Because someone is trying to make it appear that you are.””

That sentence changed everything.

Everyone went quiet.

The officer closed the folder.

“Someone called in an anonymous tip claiming Emma was being hidden.””

I looked at Emily.

“By you?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan spoke.

“I think we know.””

Everyone looked at him.

He turned toward Oliver.

Oliver’s face changed.

“What?””

Ethan stepped forward.

“The person who created this report needed access to Daniel’s personal information.””

Oliver shook his head.

“No.””

“You had it.””

“I worked with him.””

“Exactly.””

Oliver’s expression hardened.

“You’re accusing me?””

“I’m saying you had the opportunity.””

The officer looked between them.

“Who is Oliver?””

I answered without looking away.

“My former business partner.””

The officer nodded.

“And he had access to your documents?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew.

Oliver did.

My financial records.

My legal information.

My signature.

Everything.

Oliver raised his hands.

“Daniel, think about this.””

I stared at him.

“I am.””

“No.””

His voice became desperate.

“You’re letting your emotions control you.””

I almost laughed.

“My emotions?””

I looked around.

“At this point, I’m the only person here who didn’t know the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Sophie’s voice came from behind me.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

My daughter was standing there.

Marcus beside her.

Her eyes were full of fear.

The police officer noticed her.

“Is this Sophie?””

I immediately moved closer.

“Yes.””

He looked at her gently.

“Hi, Sophie.””

She didn’t respond.

She only held onto my hand.

I squeezed it.

“You’re okay.””

But I wasn’t sure I believed myself.

Because someone had been watching her.

Someone had photographed her.

Someone had tried to erase her family.

And now someone was trying to make me look like the person who hurt them.

The officer looked at Emily.

“We need everyone involved to answer questions.””

Emily nodded.

“I’ll cooperate.””

I looked at her.

“You’re really going to do this?””

She met my eyes.

“Yes.””

“You know what happens if they believe this?””

“I know.””

She looked at Sophie.

“But I won’t run anymore.””

That mattered.

Even though I was still angry.

Even though I still had questions.

Because for three years, Emily had been a ghost.

Now she was finally standing in the light.

And accepting whatever came.

The officer took out his phone.

“One more thing.””

Everyone looked at him.

“We found the source of the report.””

My heart tightened.

“What?””

He turned the screen around.

A name appeared.

*James Whitmore.*

Vanessa’s attorney.

The room exploded.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You knew.””

She shook her head.

“I didn’t.””

“Your lawyer.””

“I didn’t know.””

The officer continued.

“Mr. Whitmore submitted the report using documents provided by someone else.””

“Who?””

The officer looked down.

“We’re still investigating.””

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

“Yes?””

A pause.

His expression changed.

Everyone noticed.

“What?””

Another pause.

“Are you sure?””

He looked toward me.

Then Emily.

Then Sophie.

Finally, he said:

“We found Emma Carter.””

My entire body froze.

The room went silent.

I couldn’t move.

“You found her?””

The officer nodded.

“She’s alive.””

The words should have brought relief.

And they did.

For one second.

Then I noticed his expression.

Something was wrong.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“She was found at a private residence.””

“Whose?””

The officer looked at the folder.

Then at Victoria.

Victoria’s face went pale.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

The officer answered:

“The residence belongs to Victoria Carter.””

Everyone turned.

Victoria slowly closed her eyes.

Emily whispered:

“No…”

I looked at Victoria.

“You had Emma this whole time?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

The officer continued.

“She says she has information about who has been controlling this entire situation.””

My heart pounded.

“Can I see her?””

The officer looked uncertain.

“Mr. Carter…”

“Please.””

He studied me.

Then nodded.

“She specifically asked for you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“She knows me?””

The officer looked at the report.

“She said something else.””

“What?””

He read the note attached to the file.

“She said…”

He paused.

Then continued.

“‘Tell my father I’m sorry I couldn’t find him sooner.’”

My eyes filled.

A daughter I never knew.

A child I never held.

A piece of my family stolen by secrets.

I looked at Emily.

She was crying silently.

Then I looked at Victoria.

For the first time, she looked completely defeated.

But before we could leave, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Again.

I opened the message.

One photo.

Emma.

Standing outside Victoria’s house.

Taken moments ago.

Underneath it was a message.

*You found one daughter. Now watch what happens to the other.*

My blood froze.

I turned immediately.

“Sophie.””

She was gone.

The place where she had been standing was empty.

Marcus looked around in panic.

“I only looked away for a second.””

The entire room erupted.

“Sophie!””

I ran.

Through the ballroom.

Through the hallway.

Through the doors.

Calling her name.

But she was nowhere.

Then I saw it.

A small white flower from her dress lying on the floor.

Next to it was a note.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

May you like

Only one sentence was written.

*Now you understand how Emily felt when she lost Emma.*
