Amused

Chapter 6: The Memory Sophie Was Forced To Forget

The necklace slipped from my fingers.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone in that room understood one thing.

The message wasn’t meant for Emily.

It wasn’t meant for Vanessa.

It wasn’t meant for Oliver.

It was meant for me.

*She remembers everything, Daniel.*

My eyes moved slowly toward Sophie.

She was holding onto Marcus’s hand, staring at the necklace with confusion.

Not fear.

Not recognition.

Just confusion.

But Emily’s reaction told me something was wrong.

She looked like she had just seen a ghost.

Again.

I picked up the necklace.

“Emily.””

She didn’t answer.

“Emily, what does this mean?””

Her eyes stayed fixed on Sophie.

Then she whispered:

“She remembers.””

My heart tightened.

“You said that like you already knew.””

Emily looked at me.

“I was afraid this day would come.””

I shook my head.

“No more.””

My voice echoed through the ballroom.

“No more secrets.””

Everyone went quiet.

I looked at Emily.

“I spent three years believing you were dead.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

“I raised our daughter thinking she lost her mother forever.””

“I know.””

“And now you’re standing here telling me there are things about Sophie that I don’t know?””

Emily looked down.

“Yes.””

That one word hurt.

Because I realized something.

The woman I loved had come back.

But she had not brought back the life we lost.

She had brought back more questions.

I turned toward Sophie.

“Sweetheart.””

She looked up.

“Yes, Daddy?””

I knelt down.

“Where did you find this necklace?””

She looked at the floor.

“During the lights going out.””

“Did you know whose it was?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Then she touched the necklace carefully.

“But I’ve seen it before.””

Emily stopped breathing.

“What?””

Sophie looked at her.

“Not you.””

Her small eyebrows pulled together.

“I mean… in my dreams.””

Nobody moved.

I felt a chill.

“Sophie, what kind of dreams?””

She looked at me.

“The same one.””

My voice became softer.

“Tell me.””

She looked nervous.

“Mommy is crying.””

Emily covered her mouth.

Sophie continued.

“She’s in a car.””

The room went silent.

“She keeps telling me to hide.””

My heart dropped.

“Hide?””

Sophie nodded.

“Then someone opens the door.””

She grabbed my hand.

“And Mommy says, ‘Don’t trust him.’”

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Sophie looked around the room.

Then her eyes landed on Oliver.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Oliver’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

I saw it.

Fear.

“Sophie,” I whispered, “who does Mommy say not to trust?””

She looked at Oliver.

Then she whispered:

“Him.””

A wave of shock moved through the room.

Oliver immediately stepped forward.

“No.””

His voice was sharp.

“She’s a child. She’s confused.””

I stood up.

“Don’t.””

My voice stopped him.

“Do not explain my daughter’s memories away.””

Oliver stared at me.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

His expression became desperate.

“You’re letting these people manipulate you.””

I looked at him.

“These people?””

I pointed toward Emily.

“My wife?””

Then toward Sophie.

“My daughter?””

Oliver went quiet.

That silence told me more than words could.

Ethan stepped beside me.

“He knows.””

Oliver looked at him.

“Stay out of this.””

“No.””

Ethan’s voice was calm.

“You’ve been controlling this story for years.””

Oliver laughed.

“Controlling?””

“Yes.””

Emily stepped forward.

“You convinced Daniel I was gone.””

Oliver looked at her.

“You were gone.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“I was hidden.””

Oliver’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what I did for you.””

The sentence froze everyone.

I stared at him.

“What did you do for her?””

Oliver realized his mistake.

Too late.

Emily looked at him.

“You never told him?””

My eyes moved between them.

“What?””

Oliver looked away.

Emily took a breath.

“After the crash, Oliver found me.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“He was the first person who reached me.””

I looked at Oliver.

“You found her?””

He said nothing.

“You found my wife alive.””

Silence.

“And you told me she was dead.””

Oliver’s face changed.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

My voice was shaking.

“No excuses.””

I stepped closer.

“You let me bury her.””

Oliver looked down.

“I thought it was the only way.””

The words hit me.

The only way.

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“The only way?””

“Yes.””

“To do what?””

Oliver looked at me.

“To keep Sophie alive.””

Nobody spoke.

Because for one second, it sounded like an answer.

Like maybe there was a reason.

Maybe there was something I didn’t understand.

Then Emily spoke.

“Tell him the truth.””

Oliver closed his eyes.

“Emily.””

“Tell him.””

His jaw tightened.

Then he said:

“The person behind everything was never Vanessa.””

My stomach sank.

I looked at him.

“Then who?””

Oliver didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the entrance.

Like he was waiting for someone.

Then he whispered:

“Someone who knew exactly how to destroy your family.””

The ballroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman walked in.

Older.

Elegant.

Completely calm.

She wasn’t scared.

She wasn’t confused.

She looked like she belonged there.

Like this was her event.

Like she had been invited.

Emily went pale.

“No.””

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Emily.””

Emily stepped back.

“Mother?””

The entire room froze.

I stared at Emily.

“Your mother?””

Emily’s expression was full of fear.

Not surprise.

Fear.

The woman walked closer.

“I see you finally came back.””

Emily’s voice trembled.

“You weren’t supposed to find me.””

The woman smiled.

“I didn’t have to.””

Her eyes moved toward Sophie.

“She brought you back.””

I immediately moved in front of my daughter.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at me.

Her smile was polite.

Almost warm.

“My name is Victoria Carter.””

My blood ran cold.

Carter.

The same last name as Emily.

The same last name as Sophie.

Emily’s mother.

She looked at me.

“I’m sorry we had to meet under these circumstances.””

I didn’t answer.

Because something about her terrified me.

Not because she was loud.

Not because she was threatening.

Because she was calm.

Too calm.

Victoria looked at the necklace in my hand.

“Interesting.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Leave Sophie alone.””

Victoria tilted her head.

“You still think this is about Sophie?””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria looked at me.

“It means you have spent three years protecting the wrong secret.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Emily whispered:

“Daniel, don’t listen to her.””

Victoria smiled.

“Why?””

She looked at Emily.

“Because you’re afraid he’ll know what you did?””

The room went silent.

I looked at Emily.

“What is she talking about?””

Emily didn’t answer.

And that terrified me more than anything.

Victoria stepped closer.

“Your wife didn’t disappear because of me.””

Emily looked at her.

“Stop.””

“She disappeared because she made a choice.””

My chest tightened.

“What choice?””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at Victoria.

“Tell me.””

Victoria smiled.

“She left that night because she was running from the truth.””

Emily whispered:

“That’s not true.””

Victoria ignored her.

“And the truth is…”

She looked at Sophie.

Then at me.

“…Sophie is not the only child Emily was protecting.””

The room went completely silent.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Victoria reached into her bag.

She pulled out an old photograph.

Then she handed it to me.

I looked down.

The picture showed Emily.

Years ago.

Holding a baby.

A baby that wasn’t Sophie.

On the back of the photograph was a date.

And a name.

A name I had never heard before.

*Emma Carter.*

I looked at Emily.

“Who is Emma?””

Her face collapsed.

And for the first time since she came back…

She looked truly terrified.

May you like

Because she whispered:

“She’s your daughter.””
