Amused

Chapter 5: The Truth Emily Hid For Three Years

Darkness swallowed the ballroom.

One second, hundreds of candles illuminated the room.

The next, everything disappeared.

The music stopped.

The conversations stopped.

The laughter stopped.

For a moment, all I could hear was my own heartbeat.

Then came the screams.

Not loud enough to sound like panic.

Not yet.

Just confused voices asking what happened.

“Everyone stay where you are!””

The wedding coordinator’s voice echoed through the darkness.

Someone knocked over a glass.

A child started crying somewhere near the back of the room.

And all I could think about was Sophie.

I moved instantly.

“Sophie!””

I couldn’t see her.

I couldn’t see anything.

My hands reached forward, searching through the darkness.

Then I felt a small hand grab mine.

“Daddy?””

Relief hit me so hard my knees almost gave out.

I pulled her close.

“I’m here.””

She buried her face against my chest.

“I’m scared.””

“I know.””

I held her tighter.

“I’ve got you.””

A few seconds later, emergency lights flickered on.

The ballroom returned in a dim red glow.

And that was when I saw it.

The entire room had changed.

The guests who had arrived expecting a wedding were now staring at me, at Vanessa, and at the woman everyone thought was dead.

Emily stood near the doorway.

Still frozen.

Still watching the darkness behind us like she expected someone to appear.

I walked toward her.

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“They know.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Emily looked at Sophie.

Then back at me.

“The people who helped me disappear.””

The words made no sense.

“You need to explain that.””

She nodded slowly.

“I do.””

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

It was quiet.

Almost broken.

“You finally have to tell him, don’t you?””

Emily turned.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“No more secrets.””

I stared at her.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Her eyes met mine.

“You’re right.””

For the first time since I met her, Vanessa looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Just tired.

“I made mistakes.””

I looked at Sophie.

“You did more than make mistakes.””

She looked down.

“I know.””

That answer surprised me.

Because I expected excuses.

I expected her to fight.

Instead, she looked like someone who had already lost.

But I wasn’t ready to forgive.

Not even close.

I turned back to Emily.

“Start talking.””

Emily nodded.

“Three years ago, I found out that someone had been moving money from Sophie’s account.””

My expression changed.

“Someone?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“Vanessa wasn’t the only person involved.””

The hallway went silent again.

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face changed.

“You said you wouldn’t tell him.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Nothing.””

Emily shook her head.

“It means she knows who helped her.””

I stepped closer.

“Who?””

Neither woman answered.

That terrified me.

Because I was beginning to understand something.

The truth wasn’t one secret.

It was a chain.

And every person I trusted had been holding onto one piece.

Emily continued.

“When I discovered the account activity, I started investigating.””

“You didn’t tell me?””

She looked away.

“No.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

“Afraid of what?””

“That if I told you, you would confront them.””

“And?””

“And you would put yourself and Sophie in danger.””

The words stopped me.

Because Emily knew me.

She knew exactly what I would have done.

I would have walked into the fire without thinking.

For my family.

I lowered my voice.

“So you decided to disappear?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t decide.””

“Then what happened?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“The night of the accident, I was driving to meet Ethan.””

I looked at Ethan.

“He was helping me collect evidence.””

Ethan nodded.

“I had connections in financial investigations. I was trying to trace where the money was going.””

Emily continued.

“Someone followed me.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What happened?””

“I crashed.””

“You almost died.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone say you died?””

Emily looked down.

“Because someone made sure they believed it.””

The room felt silent again.

I stared at her.

“Who?””

Emily didn’t answer.

And suddenly, I knew.

“Vanessa?””

Vanessa looked away.

“No.””

But the hesitation was there.

Emily spoke quietly.

“Vanessa wasn’t the person who caused the crash.””

I looked confused.

“Then why?””

“Because after the crash, she found out I survived.””

My eyes widened.

“And she kept quiet.””

Emily nodded.

“She did.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.””

Vanessa whispered:

“Yes.””

The word hurt more than I expected.

“You knew my wife was alive.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Sophie still had a mother.””

Tears appeared in her eyes.

“Yes.””

“And you still walked into my life?””

She swallowed.

“I thought she was never coming back.””

The anger inside me rose.

“You thought?””

“I was told she wouldn’t.””

“By who?””

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

“I don’t know.””

Emily stepped forward.

“That’s a lie.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You think you know everything?””

“I know you received money.””

The entire room froze.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What?””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

Emily continued.

“Someone paid her to stay silent.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Then explain the transfer.””

My stomach dropped.

“You have proof?””

Ethan pulled out another document.

“I traced the payment.””

He handed it to me.

I looked at the page.

A bank transfer.

The amount.

The date.

The sender.

My eyes narrowed.

Because the sender wasn’t Vanessa.

It was a company.

A company I recognized.

My own company.

“What is this?””

Emily looked at me.

“Daniel, there’s something else you don’t know.””

I stared at the document.

“What?””

She hesitated.

“Your business partner knew.””

My blood went cold.

“My business partner?””

She nodded.

“Oliver.””

I felt like the ground shifted.

Oliver had been my friend for ten years.

He was the person who stood beside me when Emily died.

The person who helped me rebuild my company.

The person who told me I needed to move on.

The person who introduced me to Vanessa.

No.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Emily looked at me sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You’re wrong.””

Ethan spoke quietly.

“We have records.””

I looked at him.

“What records?””

“Messages.””

My stomach tightened.

“Between who?””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

“Between Oliver and Vanessa.””

A sudden noise came from the ballroom entrance.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Wearing a dark suit.

Holding a phone.

Oliver.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

“Daniel.””

The sound of his voice made my skin crawl.

Because he wasn’t surprised.

Not by Emily.

Not by the documents.

Not by the ruined wedding.

He looked like he had been waiting.

I stared at him.

“How long have you been here?””

Oliver smiled faintly.

“Long enough.””

My hands tightened.

“You knew.””

He didn’t deny it.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice was cold.

“You listen.””

The guests watched silently.

The entire wedding had become a courtroom.

And Oliver was standing in front of me like he was prepared for judgment.

“You knew Emily was alive.””

His silence answered me.

“You knew Vanessa was lying.””

Another silence.

“You knew someone was trying to hurt Sophie.””

Oliver’s expression finally changed.

A tiny crack.

A moment of fear.

Then he said something I never expected.

“Daniel…”

He looked at Sophie.

“I was trying to protect her.””

I stared at him.

“From who?””

Oliver looked toward the ballroom doors.

Then back at me.

And whispered:

“From the person who is standing behind you.””

My body went still.

Slowly…

I turned around.

Nobody was there.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence appeared.

*Ask Emily what happened the night she left Sophie behind.*

I looked at Emily.

Her face had lost all color.

Because she knew exactly what they were talking about.

And then Sophie spoke.

Quietly.

Confused.

“Daddy…”

I turned.

She was holding something in her hand.

Something she must have picked up from the floor during the blackout.

A small silver necklace.

Emily gasped.

Because it was hers.

The necklace she had been wearing the night she disappeared.

And attached to it was a tiny piece of paper.

I unfolded it.

May you like

Only four words were written.

*She remembers everything, Daniel.*
