Chapter 8: The Choice Emily Made In The Dark
The phone slipped from my hand.
It hit the marble floor with a sharp crack.
But I barely heard it.
Because one sentence kept repeating in my mind.
*She chose which daughter to save.*
I looked at Emily.
She looked like she had been waiting for this moment since the day she came back.
Not because she wanted it.
Because she knew it was coming.
“Daniel…”
I raised my hand.
“Don’t.””
The word came out quietly.
But it carried everything I was feeling.
The anger.
The pain.
The confusion.
The betrayal.
Emily stopped.
For years, I had imagined what I would say if she somehow came back.
I imagined screaming.
I imagined asking why.
I imagined demanding answers.
But now that she was standing in front of me, alive, the only thing I felt was exhaustion.
Because every answer created ten more questions.
I looked at her.
“Did you choose Sophie over Emma?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too quickly.
“Then explain.””
She looked down.
“I never chose one child over another.””
“Then why did someone say that?””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Because they don’t know the truth.””
“Then tell me.””
The entire room watched.
Nobody moved.
Nobody interrupted.
Even Vanessa and Oliver stayed silent.
Because everyone understood.
This wasn’t about the wedding anymore.
This was about a family that had been buried under secrets for years.
Emily took a deep breath.
“The night I disappeared, I wasn’t running away.””
I stared at her.
“Then what were you doing?””
“Trying to save both of them.””
I frowned.
“Both?””
She nodded.
“Emma and Sophie.””
My heart tightened.
“Where was Emma?””
Emily looked at Victoria.
And Victoria’s calm expression finally cracked.
Just slightly.
“She had her.””
The words came from Emily.
“She had Emma.””
I turned toward Victoria.
“You had my daughter?””
Victoria didn’t deny it.
“I had custody.””
“You took her.””
“I protected her.””
“From who?””
Victoria looked at me.
“From the same people who are threatening Sophie now.””
That answer confused me.
Because for the first time, I saw something different in Victoria.
Not kindness.
Not innocence.
But fear.
Real fear.
Emily stepped closer.
“Victoria wasn’t the person I should have been fighting.””
I looked at her.
“Then who?””
Emily’s voice lowered.
“The person who was moving behind all of this.””
Ethan handed me another document.
“We found something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“A connection between the people who targeted Sophie’s inheritance and the people involved with Emma’s disappearance.””
I took the papers.
The names.
The dates.
The transactions.
They all connected.
Vanessa.
Oliver.
A company I didn’t recognize.
And another name.
A name that made Emily go completely still.
I looked up.
“Who is Robert Vale?””
Nobody answered.
That silence told me enough.
I looked at Emily.
“Who is he?””
She whispered:
“Emma’s biological grandfather.””
I frowned.
“Victoria’s husband?””
Victoria looked away.
“He was.””
The room became colder.
Emily continued.
“Robert was the one who wanted Emma.””
“Why?””
“Because he believed children were assets.””
My stomach turned.
“He wanted custody?””
“No.””
Emily shook her head.
“He wanted control.””
A memory flashed through my mind.
The way Vanessa talked about family.
The way she talked about building a future.
The way she looked at Sophie.
Like she was something to acquire.
Not love.
A possession.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you know Robert?””
She looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
“You did.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.””
My jaw tightened.
“How?””
She looked exhausted.
“He found me after Emily disappeared.””
Emily stared at her.
“You worked with him.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“At first.””
Everyone froze.
“At first?””
Vanessa nodded.
“I thought he was helping me.””
I almost laughed.
“Helping you?””
“He told me Daniel needed someone. He told me Sophie needed a mother.””
My expression changed.
“You didn’t meet me by accident.””
Vanessa looked down.
“No.””
The honesty was almost worse.
“You were introduced to me.””
“Yes.””
“By Robert?””
She nodded.
The room went silent.
Every memory I had of Vanessa entering my life suddenly looked different.
The timing.
The kindness.
The way she seemed perfect.
None of it had been random.
I looked at Oliver.
“And you?””
He looked away.
That was enough.
“You too.””
Oliver’s voice was quiet.
“I made mistakes.””
“You helped destroy my family.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
I stared at him.
“By lying?””
He had no answer.
Emily stepped forward.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I looked at her.
“I am listening.””
She swallowed.
“The night of the accident, I discovered Robert had found Emma.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He wanted to use her to force me into giving up Sophie.””
I felt sick.
“He had both girls connected to the same legal battle.””
Emily nodded.
“He knew Sophie’s inheritance was protected. But he believed if he controlled Emma, he could control everything.””
My hands clenched.
“So what happened?””
Emily’s voice broke.
“I went to get Emma.””
“And?””
“I found out he knew I was coming.””
A pause.
“Someone followed me.””
“The crash.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at Ethan.
“You said someone helped her survive.””
He nodded.
“After the crash, I found Emily before anyone else.””
I looked at Emily.
“And Sophie?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“She was already with you.””
The answer hurt.
Because it was simple.
Because it was true.
Emily had been forced into an impossible situation.
But there was still something I didn’t understand.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
She looked at me.
“I tried.””
That surprised me.
“What?””
“I tried three times.””
The room went silent.
“Then why didn’t I know?””
Emily looked at Victoria.
“Because every time I got close, someone stopped me.””
Victoria’s expression changed.
“Don’t blame me for everything.””
Emily’s voice became sharp.
“You helped hide me.””
“Because I was protecting Emma.””
“And you kept me away from Sophie.””
Victoria looked down.
Silence.
I felt overwhelmed.
Too many lies.
Too many people making decisions about my children without me.
I looked at everyone.
“You all decided what was best for my family.””
Nobody spoke.
“And nobody thought I deserved the truth.””
Emily stepped closer.
“I was wrong.””
The words surprised me.
She continued.
“I thought if I stayed away, Sophie would be safe.””
A tear fell down her face.
“But I was wrong.””
I looked at Sophie.
She was still with Marcus.
Watching.
Waiting.
My heart broke.
Because she had heard enough secrets for one lifetime.
Then suddenly, the ballroom doors slammed open.
A police officer rushed inside.
Everyone turned.
“Daniel Carter?””
“Yes?””
He looked serious.
“We need you to come with us.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
He looked at Emily.
Then at Sophie.
Then back at me.
“We received a report that someone matching Emily Carter’s description has been involved in a child abduction case.””
The entire room froze.
“What?””
The officer continued.
“We need to ask questions.””
Emily stepped forward.
“That’s a lie.””
The officer didn’t react.
“We’re not accusing anyone yet.””
I looked at Emily.
She looked terrified.
Not because of the police.
Because of something else.
I noticed the officer holding a folder.
On the front was a photograph.
A photograph of Emma.
And beneath it:
*Missing child report.*
My heart stopped.
Because the date on the report was today.
And the signature at the bottom…
May you like
was mine.
Except I had never signed it.
