Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden In The Folder

The folder felt heavier than it should have.

It was only a few sheets of paper.

A few printed pages.

A few words arranged in black ink.

But as I held it in my hands, it felt like I was holding a door that I had spent years unknowingly standing in front of.

A door that, once opened, would change everything.

I looked at the man in front of me.

“Who are you?””

He glanced around the hallway.

The wedding guests were still inside the ballroom, unaware of the storm happening just beyond the doors.

“My name is Ethan Miller.””

The name meant nothing to me.

Not yet.

I tightened my grip on the folder.

“What does this have to do with Sophie?””

Ethan looked at my daughter.

His expression softened.

“Everything.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””

Her voice was sharp.

Different from the sweet tone she used when we were alone.

The same tone I had heard when she thought Sophie wasn’t paying attention.

My eyes moved to her.

“You know him?””

For the first time that day, Vanessa looked nervous.

“I said don’t listen to him.””

Ethan gave a bitter laugh.

“That’s exactly what she said the last time she tried to hide the truth.””

Vanessa’s face turned red.

“Get out.””

“No.””

The hallway became tense.

Marcus stepped closer to me.

“Daniel, who is this guy?””

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

Because my attention was locked on Vanessa.

The woman who had been standing beside me for two years.

The woman who had promised to love my daughter.

The woman who was now looking at this stranger like she was afraid of what he might reveal.

I slowly opened the folder.

The first page was a photograph.

A young woman.

A hospital room.

A newborn baby.

My eyes froze.

Because I recognized the woman.

Sophie’s mother.

My late wife, Emily.

My breathing stopped.

“What is this?””

Ethan swallowed.

“It’s proof that Vanessa knew more about Sophie’s past than she ever told you.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That’s insane.””

I looked at the next page.

A document.

A birth record.

A name.

My hands started trembling.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said quietly, “please.””

That was the first time she sounded scared.

Not angry.

Not annoyed.

Scared.

I looked at her.

“Please what?””

She stepped closer.

“Don’t do this here.””

I almost laughed.

Because that was exactly what she had said before.

Don’t do this here.

Don’t ask questions here.

Don’t embarrass me here.

Everything was always about the right place and the right time.

Except nobody ever cared about the right time for Sophie.

Only me.

Only my daughter.

I looked back at Ethan.

“Tell me.””

He nodded.

“Two months before Emily died, she contacted me.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

Ethan looked at Sophie.

“Because she was afraid.””

The hallway went quiet.

“Afraid of what?””

He hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Afraid that someone would take Sophie away from you.””

My stomach tightened.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

Ethan pointed toward the folder.

“Read the letter.””

I pulled out the folded paper underneath the documents.

The handwriting was familiar.

Too familiar.

I knew that handwriting.

I had seen it on grocery lists.

Birthday cards.

Notes Emily left beside my coffee cup before work.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

Daniel, if you are reading this, something happened that I was never able to fix.

I stopped.

The words blurred.

But I forced myself to continue.

I need you to know that Sophie is yours. She has always been yours. But there is someone who may try to convince you otherwise.

My heart pounded.

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Ethan’s face was serious.

I continued.

Vanessa knows about Sophie’s biological history. She knows things I never told her directly. I don’t know how she found out, but she has been asking questions about custody, inheritance, and what would happen to Sophie if something happened to me.

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Custody.

Inheritance.

Those words echoed in my mind.

I looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t look like the woman from my memories anymore.

She looked like a stranger.

“You knew?””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice was too fast.

Too desperate.

I held up the letter.

“Emily wrote this.””

Vanessa’s eyes moved to the page.

For a second, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“She was always paranoid.””

The words hit me.

Hard.

I stared at her.

“You just called my dead wife paranoid.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I’m saying she misunderstood things.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“No. She understood perfectly.””

Vanessa looked at him with hatred.

“You ruined everything.””

I froze.

Those words weren’t meant for me.

They were meant for him.

Ethan noticed it too.

“You almost made it.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“Shut up.””

“You almost married him before he found out.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Neither of them answered.

I looked between them.

“Someone better start explaining.””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Daniel, there’s a reason I didn’t tell you everything.””

I laughed quietly.

“Everything?””

I looked around at the wedding decorations.

“At this point, I’m not sure I know anything.””

She stepped closer.

“I loved you.””

The words sounded empty.

“You loved the idea of us,” I said.

Her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Then explain.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence was louder than any confession.

Sophie was still holding my hand.

I looked down at her.

She was staring at Vanessa.

Not with anger.

With sadness.

And somehow that hurt more.

Because a child should never look at an adult that way.

Like she were mourning someone who was still alive.

Ethan spoke again.

“Daniel, you need to know why Vanessa wanted this marriage.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Don’t.””

I ignored her.

“Why?””

Ethan looked at the folder.

“Because Sophie has something.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“A trust fund.””

The words barely registered.

“What?””

“When Emily’s parents passed away, they created a protected account for Sophie. It was supposed to be untouched until she became an adult.””

I stared at him.

“I knew about the account.””

“No, you knew about the money.””

My expression changed.

“What’s the difference?””

Ethan looked directly at me.

“The difference is that you didn’t know Vanessa had been researching how to access it.””

The hallway seemed to tilt.

I looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t deny it.

That was the worst part.

She just stood there.

Silent.

Marcus whispered:

“Daniel…”

I couldn’t speak.

Because suddenly every strange moment had a new meaning.

The expensive gifts.

The sudden interest in Sophie.

The way Vanessa insisted on being added to every document.

The way she always asked about my finances but disguised it as concern.

I had mistaken calculation for love.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“You’re making me sound like some kind of monster.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t need to make you anything.””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You think I don’t care about Sophie?””

I looked at my daughter.

Then back at her.

“I think if you cared about her, you wouldn’t have written that note.””

Her face tightened.

“That note was taken out of context.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You told a six-year-old child she was unwanted.””

“I was trying to prepare her.””

“For what?””

Vanessa had no answer.

The silence returned.

Then suddenly, a phone rang.

Everyone looked around.

It was Vanessa’s phone.

She glanced at the screen.

The color disappeared from her face.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

She quickly turned the phone away.

“No one.””

I stepped closer.

“Answer it.””

“Daniel—”

“Answer it.””

Her hands trembled as she declined the call.

But before the screen went dark, I saw the name.

*Attorney James Whitmore.*

My eyes narrowed.

“Why is your lawyer calling you during our wedding?””

Vanessa didn’t respond.

Ethan looked at me.

“Because he’s the same lawyer who helped her investigate Sophie’s trust.””

My stomach dropped.

I looked at Vanessa.

She finally lost control.

“You don’t understand!””

Her voice echoed through the hallway.

“You have no idea what I had to do!””

Everyone froze.

Including her.

Because she realized what she had just admitted.

I slowly walked toward her.

“What did you have to do?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Regret.

Fear.

Panic.

Then the ballroom doors behind us opened.

A wedding coordinator stepped out.

“Mr. Carter?””

Everyone turned.

The coordinator looked confused.

“There’s someone else here asking to speak with you.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

She looked down at the card in her hand.

Then she read the name.

“Emily Carter.””

My blood ran cold.

“That’s impossible.””

The coordinator looked at the card again.

“No, sir.””

She handed it to me.

“Because the person waiting outside says she’s Sophie’s mother.””

May you like

And behind me, Vanessa whispered one sentence that made my entire body freeze.

“She wasn’t supposed to come back.””
