Chapter 7: The Daughter I Never Knew Existed
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The photograph in my hand blurred.
Not because of tears.
Because my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.
Emily.
Holding a baby.
A baby who wasn’t Sophie.
A baby connected to me.
A daughter I never knew existed.
I looked up slowly.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Emily’s face crumpled.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You’re telling me I have another child?””
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
My eyes moved from Emily to Victoria.
Then back to Emily.
“Explain.””
Emily looked like she had been carrying this moment for years.
“I wanted to.””
“When?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“When you were ready.””
I laughed.
A painful, empty sound.
“When I was ready?””
I held up the photograph.
“When was I supposed to be ready for this?””
Emily lowered her head.
“I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That you would hate me.””
The honesty of her answer almost hurt more.
Because I didn’t know if I hated her.
I didn’t know what I felt.
Anger.
Confusion.
Betrayal.
Grief.
Everything collided at once.
Sophie was standing nearby, watching silently.
And suddenly, my anger disappeared.
Because there was a little girl in the middle of this chaos.
My daughter.
Who had already spent enough of her life losing people.
I turned toward her.
“Sophie.””
She looked up.
“Yes, Daddy?””
I forced my voice to stay calm.
“Can you go with Uncle Marcus for a little while?””
Her face immediately changed.
“Why?””
I knelt down.
“Because the adults need to talk.””
She looked at Emily.
Then at me.
“Are you mad at Mommy?””
The question destroyed me.
Because Sophie had already lost one mother.
And now she was watching another impossible moment happen.
I shook my head.
“No, sweetheart.””
I touched her cheek.
“I’m just trying to understand.””
She nodded slowly.
Marcus took her hand.
“I’ll stay right here.””
Sophie walked away.
But she kept looking back.
Like she was afraid that if she stopped watching, someone else would disappear.
I waited until she was far enough away.
Then I turned back.
“Now tell me the truth.””
Emily nodded.
She looked exhausted.
“The baby’s name was Emma.””
I stared at the photograph.
“How?””
She took a deep breath.
“Before I met you, I was married.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
Emily looked at me.
“I was young.””
Her voice shook.
“I made mistakes.””
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
“You were married before?””
“Yes.””
“And you had a child?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t I know?””
Emily looked down.
“Because Emma was taken from me.””
The hallway went silent.
“Taken?””
She nodded.
“Her father’s family had money. Influence. Connections. They convinced a court that I wasn’t capable of raising her.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“What does this have to do with me?””
Emily swallowed.
“Because Emma’s father wasn’t a stranger.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She looked at Victoria.
Then at me.
“Her father was related to your family.””
The words hit like a wave.
I looked at Victoria.
She was watching me calmly.
Almost like she had been waiting for this moment.
“My family?””
Emily nodded.
“Your father knew.””
My stomach dropped.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“My father died ten years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then how could he know?””
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“Because he helped hide it.””
The world went silent.
My father.
The man I spent my childhood admiring.
The man I thought was honest.
Another secret.
Another person who had lied.
I looked at Victoria.
“Why are you here?””
She smiled slightly.
“To finally reveal the truth.””
“No.””
My voice was firm.
“You’re here because you want something.””
Victoria’s expression didn’t change.
“You’re smarter than Emily gave you credit for.””
Emily stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to her.””
Victoria ignored her.
“Your father made a promise to protect Emma.””
I looked at her.
“Where is she?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
“Where is my daughter?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“She’s alive.””
The relief came first.
Then anger.
“Alive?””
I turned toward Emily.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“I found her.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
I felt my hands shake.
“You found my child and didn’t tell me?””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“From what?””
Emily looked toward Victoria.
“From this family.””
Victoria smiled.
“How dramatic.””
Emily’s voice became stronger.
“You know what you did.””
Victoria shook her head.
“You still blame me for everything.””
“Because you destroyed my life.””
“I saved your life.””
Emily froze.
The words hung between them.
I looked at Emily.
“What does she mean?””
Emily didn’t answer.
Victoria stepped forward.
“Your wife wants you to believe she was only a victim.””
“Stop.””
“But she made choices too.””
I looked at Emily.
“What choices?””
Emily’s face changed.
Fear.
Not of Victoria.
Of me knowing.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I need the truth.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“After Emma was taken from me, I spent years trying to find her.””
“And?””
“I found evidence that your father was connected.””
I frowned.
“My father?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Emily looked at Victoria.
“Because Victoria helped arrange the adoption.””
The room froze.
Victoria sighed.
“Such an ugly word.””
“You took my daughter.””
“No.””
Victoria’s voice remained calm.
“I protected her.””
Emily stepped forward.
“You separated a mother from her child.””
“And you survived.””
I looked between them.
Nothing made sense.
Then Ethan spoke.
“There’s something else.””
Everyone turned.
He held another document.
“What now?””
His expression was serious.
“The reason Vanessa and Oliver were after Sophie wasn’t just the inheritance.””
I stared at him.
“What was it?””
He looked at Emma’s photograph.
“They knew about Emma.””
My heart dropped.
“Why?””
“Because Emma has something Sophie doesn’t.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Ethan handed me the document.
It was an old legal file.
At the bottom was a signature.
My father’s signature.
I read the attached note.
My hands started shaking.
Because it wasn’t about money.
It wasn’t about custody.
It was a confession.
A confession written ten years earlier.
If anything happens to me, the truth about Emma Carter must be revealed.
I looked at Emily.
“What truth?””
She didn’t answer.
Victoria did.
“Emma isn’t your only child connected to this.””
My blood ran cold.
“What are you saying?””
Victoria looked toward Sophie.
Then back at me.
“I’m saying someone has been searching for all of your father’s hidden heirs.””
The words made no sense.
“Heirs?””
Victoria nodded.
“Your father left behind more than money.””
She reached into her bag again.
This time she pulled out a small envelope.
“This arrived yesterday.””
I didn’t want to take it.
But I did.
Inside was a single page.
A list of names.
My name.
Emily’s name.
Sophie’s name.
Emma’s name.
And one more.
A name I had never seen before.
At the bottom was a message.
*The Carter bloodline ends tonight.*
I looked up.
“Who sent this?””
Victoria’s expression finally changed.
For the first time…
She looked afraid.
“Someone who has been watching this family longer than any of us know.””
The lights in the ballroom flickered again.
Everyone froze.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A distorted voice came through.
“Daniel Carter.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“The man who knows where your other daughter is.””
I gripped the phone.
“Where is Emma?””
The voice laughed softly.
“Ask your wife.””
I looked at Emily.
Her face had gone white.
The voice continued:
“She never told you what happened the night she chose Sophie over Emma.””
My heart stopped.
“What are you talking about?””
The line went silent.
Then one final sentence came through.
“Your wife didn’t lose a daughter, Daniel.””
May you like
A pause.
“She chose which daughter to save.””
