Amused

Chapter 9: The Brother Nobody Knew Existed

The name hung in the air.

Michael.

A name none of us recognized.

A name that somehow belonged inside my family’s history.

My mother stared at the document in her hands.

The vineyard around us disappeared.

The guests.

The cameras.

The ruined wedding.

The people watching.

All of it faded.

Because my mother was no longer looking at Ryan.

She was looking at the past.

“Who is Michael?””

Nobody answered.

Not Ryan.

Not Rachel.

Not Daniel.

Not even the agent.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

Because it meant they knew.

They all knew.

My mother slowly lowered the document.

“Everyone knew except me.””

Rachel’s voice came through the phone.

“Amanda…”

“No.””

My mother’s voice shook.

“Not another apology.””

She looked around.

“Not another person telling me they were protecting me.””

Her eyes moved to Ryan.

“Everyone keeps saying they did things because they cared.””

She laughed softly.

“But somehow every secret hurts me.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Amanda, there’s a reason.””

She turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“Do not tell me there’s a reason.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I spent my whole life believing I knew my family.””

She looked at the document.

“And now I find out there was someone else?””

The agent stepped closer.

“Mrs. Carter, we should probably discuss this somewhere more private.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

She shook her head.

“I’m tired of private.””

She held up the paper.

“Private is where people hide things.””

The agent nodded slowly.

“Then we’ll answer what we can.””

My mother looked at him.

“Who is Michael?””

The agent hesitated.

Then said:

“Michael Carter was your father’s son.””

The words didn’t make sense at first.

My mother blinked.

“What?””

The agent continued carefully.

“Your half-brother.””

The world seemed to stop.

My mother stared at him.

“No.””

The agent looked down.

“Records show that your father had a child before he married your mother.””

“My father never told me that.””

“No.””

“Because he was ashamed?””

The agent didn’t answer.

And that was an answer.

Mom looked away.

I watched her face.

I didn’t understand everything.

But I understood enough.

She had spent her entire life believing her family was one thing.

And now someone was telling her it had always been something else.

“What happened to him?””

The agent looked at the document.

“Michael was involved in a legal dispute with your father before his death.””

Ryan spoke.

“That’s what I was talking about.””

Everyone turned.

My mother looked at him.

“You knew?””

Ryan nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

“You knew about my brother?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

Ryan looked away.

“I found out after we started dating.””

Mom stared.

“And you kept it from me.””

Ryan’s voice softened.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You knew exactly how.””

Ryan looked confused.

“What?””

“You chose not to.””

The words hit harder.

Because they were true.

Ryan had built his entire life around choosing what people were allowed to know.

Emily stepped closer.

“Why would you use this?””

Ryan looked at her.

“I didn’t.””

“You did.””

She pointed at the document.

“You found another secret and turned it into another opportunity.””

Ryan’s expression hardened.

“You don’t know what happened.””

Emily looked at him.

“Then explain.””

Ryan was silent.

Again.

My mother noticed.

“You knew my father changed his will.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about Michael.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the trust.””

“Yes.””

She took a step back.

“And you still proposed to me.””

Ryan looked at her.

“I loved you.””

Nobody believed him anymore.

Not even himself.

My mother looked at the agent.

“What does Michael have to do with the money?””

The agent opened another file.

“After your father’s death, there were unresolved claims involving the estate.””

“What claims?””

“Michael claimed he was excluded unfairly.””

Mom looked stunned.

“He was his son.””

“Yes.””

“Then why wasn’t he included?””

The agent looked at the document.

“That is what we’re trying to determine.””

Ryan suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“You really don’t see it.””

My mother stared.

“See what?””

“Your family.””

He looked around.

“Everyone here is acting like I’m the only person who hid things.””

The agent stepped forward.

“Careful.””

But Ryan continued.

“Your father changed the will because he knew something.””

Mom’s eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Ryan looked at her.

“He knew Michael wasn’t just a forgotten son.””

A chill went through me.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan looked at me.

Then at my mother.

“It means Michael knew where the money really came from.””

The agent immediately interrupted.

“Mr. Blake.””

But Mom stopped him.

“No.””

She looked at Ryan.

“Let him talk.””

Ryan seemed surprised.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

“Even if it changes how you see your family?””

My mother didn’t answer.

Because she already knew.

It had already changed.

Ryan continued.

“Your father wasn’t just wealthy.””

He looked at the papers.

“He built his fortune through a company called Carter Holdings.””

Mom nodded.

“I know.””

“No.””

Ryan shook his head.

“You know the public story.””

“What’s the private story?””

Ryan looked toward Daniel.

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Ryan.””

“No.””

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“You wanted me to take the blame for everything?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“You made your choices.””

Ryan looked at him.

“And you helped.””

The agent immediately stepped between them.

“Enough.””

But the damage was done.

My mother looked at Daniel.

“You knew too?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

She closed her eyes.

Another secret.

Another person.

She looked exhausted.

Then the phone rang again.

Everyone froze.

Rachel.

Again.

Mom looked at the phone.

She almost didn’t answer.

Then she did.

“What?””

Rachel’s voice was shaking.

“Amanda, I found something.””

My mother said nothing.

“Something Ryan doesn’t know.””

Ryan’s face changed.

“What?””

Rachel continued.

“I found the original documents from Dad’s office.””

My mother froze.

“What documents?””

“The ones before the amendment.””

The agent looked interested.

“Where are they?””

Rachel hesitated.

“Safe.””

“Where?””

Silence.

Then Rachel said:

“At Michael’s house.””

Nobody moved.

My mother whispered:

“Michael is alive?””

Ryan looked shocked.

Not pretending.

Not acting.

Actually shocked.

And that scared me.

Because if Ryan knew about Michael, why didn’t he know he was alive?

The agent immediately stepped forward.

“Rachel, listen carefully.””

But Rachel continued.

“I spoke to him.””

Mom grabbed the phone.

“You spoke to my brother?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Another pause.

Then Rachel said:

“Because he contacted me.””

Mom’s hand tightened around the phone.

“What did he say?””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“He said Ryan Blake wasn’t trying to steal your money.””

Everyone looked at Ryan.

Then Rachel finished:

“He said Ryan was trying to find something your father hid before he died.””

The vineyard went silent.

My mother looked at Ryan.

For the first time, she didn’t know what to believe.

Not because she trusted him.

She didn’t.

But because the truth had become bigger than one man’s betrayal.

“Where is Michael now?””

Rachel answered:

“He’s coming here.””

Everyone looked toward the entrance.

A few seconds passed.

Then a car appeared beyond the vineyard gates.

The same gates where my mother had expected to begin a marriage.

The car stopped.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

He looked older than my mother.

Tired.

Carrying years of anger.

He walked slowly toward us.

And when he reached the edge of the ceremony area, he looked directly at Amanda Carter.

My mother couldn’t move.

The man stared at her.

Then said:

“I’m sorry it took me thirty years to meet my sister.””

My mother covered her mouth.

Because for the first time that day…

Someone had brought her a truth that wasn’t a lie.

And then Michael Carter looked at Ryan Blake.

His expression changed.

“You.””

Ryan went completely still.

Michael’s voice became cold.

“I know what you were looking for.””

Ryan’s face turned pale.

May you like

Michael took a small envelope from his coat.

“And I know where your plan really started.””
