Amused

Chapter 7: The Money That Was Never His

The vineyard had gone silent again.

But this silence felt different.

The first silence had been shock.

The second had been betrayal.

This one was fear.

My mother didn’t look at Ryan like someone who had broken her heart.

She looked at him like someone who had opened a door to a room full of things she never knew existed.

“My father’s money,” she repeated.

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Ryan looked at Daniel.

Then at the phone.

Then back at my mother.

“Amanda…”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Don’t say my name like that.””

Ryan stopped.

“Answer me.””

The guests stood completely still.

Even the people who had been trying to leave were watching now.

Because this wasn’t a wedding disaster anymore.

This was something much bigger.

“What did you do with my father’s money?””

Ryan took a breath.

“It’s not what you think.””

My mother closed her eyes.

A small, painful smile appeared.

“I knew you would say that.””

She looked at Daniel.

“Did he tell you?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Tell me what?””

“About my father.””

Daniel stayed silent.

Mom nodded slowly.

“That’s what I thought.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Amanda, your father’s estate was complicated.””

“My father died seven years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And you met me two years ago.””

“Yes.””

“So why do you know anything about his estate?””

Ryan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was the answer.

My mother turned away from him.

I watched her try to understand something that made no sense.

Like she was putting together a puzzle where every piece was the wrong shape.

Emily walked closer.

“Amanda.””

Mom looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Emily frowned.

“For what?””

“For not believing you earlier.””

Emily looked surprised.

Then she shook her head.

“You had no reason to believe me.””

“No.””

Mom looked at Ryan.

“I had every reason to question him.””

Ryan’s face tightened.

“You’re letting strangers turn you against me.””

Mom looked at him.

“Strangers?””

She pointed toward Emily.

“Your wife.””

Then toward Daniel.

“Your financial advisor.””

Then toward Rachel’s voice still coming from the phone.

“My sister.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Everyone seems to know who you are except me.””

Ryan looked down.

For the first time, he had nothing to say.

Daniel slowly took the phone away from his ear.

“Rachel, I’ll call you back.””

“No.””

My mother’s voice stopped him.

“Keep her on.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“Keep her on.””

Mom stepped closer.

“She started this conversation. She can finish it.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then put the phone on speaker again.

Rachel’s voice came through.

“Amanda?””

Mom answered.

“Yes.””

A long pause.

“I’m sorry.””

Mom laughed quietly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Rachel started crying.

“I didn’t know what Ryan was planning at first.””

“At first?””

That phrase hurt.

Mom grabbed onto it.

“At first?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

“Rachel.””

Her voice broke.

“How long have you known?””

Silence.

Then:

“Six months.””

The guests reacted immediately.

Six months.

Half a year of secrets.

Half a year of my aunt looking my mother in the eyes while knowing the truth.

Mom looked like she had been physically hit.

“You knew for six months?””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Rachel cried.

“Of losing you.””

Mom stared.

“You should have thought about that before.””

“I know.””

“No.””

Mom shook her head.

“You don’t.””

She looked down.

“You don’t know what it feels like to sit across from someone every day and believe they are on your side.””

Rachel said nothing.

“You don’t know what it feels like to introduce someone as family while they are helping destroy you.””

The words made me hold her hand tighter.

I had never heard my mother sound like that.

Not angry.

Just tired.

Ryan suddenly spoke.

“This is getting out of control.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked toward the guests.

“You’re all judging something you don’t understand.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Then explain.””

Ryan looked at her.

“I can.””

“Then do it.””

He looked at my mother.

“Your father invested money before he died.””

Mom frowned.

“What does that have to do with you?””

Ryan swallowed.

“I helped manage some of it.””

The vineyard went silent.

Mom stared.

“How?””

“Through a company.””

“What company?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

“Blake Capital.””

Mom turned.

“The company you created.””

Daniel nodded.

Ryan immediately looked at him.

“Stop.””

But Daniel continued.

“She invested with us.””

Mom froze.

“I never invested with you.””

Ryan shook his head quickly.

“No.””

Daniel looked away.

And that was enough.

Mom understood.

“You used my name.””

Ryan’s face hardened.

“I was protecting assets.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You were moving them.””

Ryan’s silence confirmed it.

Emily looked disgusted.

“You didn’t just lie to Amanda.””

She pointed at him.

“You targeted her.””

Ryan looked angry now.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Emily laughed.

“Actually, I do.””

She looked at my mother.

“Because he tried something similar with me.””

Mom looked at her.

“What?””

Emily nodded.

“When we were married, Ryan convinced me to let him handle my inheritance.””

Ryan looked away.

“I helped you.””

“You controlled it.””

“That’s not true.””

“You moved money without telling me.””

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“Because you didn’t understand investments.””

The sentence made everyone react.

Even Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Emily smiled sadly.

“There it is.””

“What?””

“The reason you choose people.””

Ryan frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

“You don’t choose people you love.””

Emily looked at my mother.

“You choose people you can convince they need you.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But nobody listened.

My mother looked at Daniel.

“Tell me everything.””

Daniel hesitated.

Ryan warned:

“Daniel.””

Mom turned.

“Don’t threaten him.””

“I’m not.””

“You are.””

Ryan looked away.

Daniel finally spoke.

“Three months ago, Ryan created a trust.””

Mom frowned.

“A trust?””

“Yes.””

“With what?””

Daniel looked at the ground.

“With assets connected to your father’s estate.””

My mother went completely still.

“My father’s estate was closed years ago.””

Daniel nodded.

“It was.””

“Then how?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Because someone reopened access.””

Mom looked at Ryan.

“Who?””

No one answered.

Then the phone crackled.

Rachel’s voice came through.

“I did.””

Everyone turned.

Mom’s face changed.

“Rachel.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Mom’s voice trembled.

“Don’t apologize.””

She stared ahead.

“Tell me why.””

Rachel cried quietly.

“Because Ryan said he could help me.””

“Help you with what?””

A pause.

“My debts.””

The answer hurt more than anger.

Mom looked down.

“How much?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

“How much?””

“Three hundred thousand dollars.””

Several guests gasped.

Mom closed her eyes.

“And Ryan paid it?””

“Yes.””

“With what?””

Silence.

Then Rachel whispered:

“Your father’s account.””

My mother looked at Ryan.

And the expression on her face changed.

Because now she understood.

The wedding.

The documents.

The trust.

The lies.

They were all connected.

Ryan hadn’t just planned to marry her.

He had already started taking pieces of her life before she ever said yes.

She stepped toward him.

“You used my sister.””

Ryan shook his head.

“No.””

“You used my father’s money.””

“Amanda—”

“You used me.””

His expression softened.

“Amanda, I love you.””

She looked at him.

And for the first time, she didn’t look hurt.

She looked finished.

“You don’t love me.””

Ryan’s face fell.

“You love what I could give you.””

Nobody spoke.

Then a sound came from behind us.

A car door closing.

Everyone turned.

A man in a dark suit walked through the vineyard entrance.

He looked around at the ruined ceremony.

Then directly at Ryan.

“Ryan Blake.””

Ryan froze.

The man held up a folder.

“I’m Agent Thomas Reed.””

My mother grabbed my hand.

The man continued.

“I’m here because we received evidence of financial fraud connected to Blake Capital.””

Ryan’s face went pale.

The agent looked at him.

“And based on what we found…”

He opened the folder.

“…you’re not the only person involved.””

Everyone looked at Ryan.

Then at Rachel’s name still glowing on the phone.

Then at Daniel.

The agent turned toward the crowd.

“I need to speak with Amanda Carter.””

My mother stepped forward.

“I’m Amanda.””

The agent nodded.

“Then I need you to see what we found in Ryan Blake’s files.””

He opened the folder.

And pulled out a photograph.

Not of Ryan.

Not of Emily.

Not of Rachel.

A photograph of someone else.

Someone I recognized immediately.

Because I had seen that person at our house.

Many times.

The agent placed it in my mother’s hand.

May you like

And whispered:

“Mrs. Carter, this person helped him build the entire plan.””
