Amused

Chapter 6: The Guest Who Was Never Invited

My mother stared at the crowd.

For several seconds, she didn’t say anything.

That was when I knew whoever sent that message mattered.

Because I had seen my mother angry.

I had seen her disappointed.

I had seen her cry.

But I had never seen her look afraid.

“Amanda?”” Claire asked quietly.

Mom didn’t answer.

Her eyes moved from person to person.

Every guest suddenly looked different.

The people who had arrived with flowers.

The people who had hugged her.

The people who had smiled and told her she looked beautiful.

One of them had been helping Ryan.

Ryan noticed where she was looking.

And for the first time since the ceremony stopped, he looked relieved.

Not because the truth was gone.

Because someone else could carry the blame.

Mom noticed that too.

“Who is it?””

Ryan looked away.

“Don’t do this.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

“You don’t want to know.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because that sounded like a threat.

Not an answer.

Emily stepped forward.

“You know who sent it.””

Ryan said nothing.

Emily looked at the guests.

“Then maybe we should ask everyone to stay.””

Several people immediately started gathering their things.

One man near the back reached for his jacket.

Claire raised her camera.

“Interesting.””

The man stopped.

Ryan looked at her.

“What are you doing?””

“Taking pictures.””

“Of what?””

“People who suddenly want to leave.””

The man’s face tightened.

Mom noticed him.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

The man looked uncomfortable.

Then Ryan spoke.

“Daniel.””

Everyone looked at him.

Mom turned.

“Daniel who?””

Ryan hesitated.

And that hesitation told her everything.

“Daniel Price,” Emily said.

Mom looked at her.

“You know him?””

Emily nodded slowly.

“Unfortunately.””

Ryan immediately interrupted.

“He has nothing to do with this.””

Emily looked at him.

“That’s exactly what you said about Rachel.””

The guests became silent again.

Mom looked at Daniel.

“Why are you here?””

Daniel forced a smile.

“I was invited.””

“By who?””

Another pause.

Then he looked at Ryan.

Mom followed his eyes.

And suddenly the answer was obvious.

Ryan had invited him.

Not as a friend.

As backup.

“Ryan.””

He looked at her.

“Explain.””

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

“Amanda, Daniel is a financial advisor.””

Mom laughed softly.

“A financial advisor.””

She held up the power of attorney papers.

“The same type of person you needed to convince me to sign these?””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Amanda, I think everyone needs to calm down.””

The sentence made Emily laugh.

“Interesting.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“You always say that when people start asking questions.””

Mom looked at him.

“You knew.””

Daniel stayed quiet.

“You knew about the documents.””

Still quiet.

“You knew about Ryan’s plan.””

Ryan suddenly snapped.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked at Daniel.

“Say something.””

Daniel stared at the ground.

And that was when my mother understood.

Ryan wasn’t controlling him.

He was scared of him.

“Daniel,” Mom said.

“Tell me the truth.””

Daniel looked at Ryan.

Then at her.

“I didn’t think it would happen like this.””

Mom’s face changed.

“Like what?””

“The wedding.””

The word sounded strange.

Like he was talking about a business meeting.

Not a marriage.

“You planned this.””

Daniel sighed.

“Not exactly.””

Emily stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at Ryan.

“You told me she would sign before anyone found out.””

The vineyard went completely silent.

Mom’s eyes moved to Ryan.

“You told him that?””

Ryan’s face turned pale.

“Amanda, listen—”

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m done listening.””

Daniel continued.

“She was supposed to sign the papers after the ceremony.””

I felt Mom’s hand tighten around mine.

“After the ceremony?””

Daniel nodded.

“The celebration was meant to keep everything simple.””

Claire frowned.

“Simple?””

Daniel looked embarrassed.

“Yes.””

Emily’s voice became sharp.

“You mean nobody would question a happy bride signing paperwork after she married him.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t need to.

Mom closed her eyes.

For a moment, I thought she might fall.

I grabbed her hand.

“Mom.””

She looked at me.

“I’m okay.””

But she wasn’t.

I knew because she smiled.

And my mother only smiled like that when she was trying not to cry.

Ryan stepped closer.

“Amanda, please.””

She looked at him.

“Please what?””

“Please understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

“No, you don’t.””

His voice cracked.

“I was trying to fix my life.””

The words surprised everyone.

Even him.

Because they sounded honest.

For the first time.

But honesty came too late.

Ryan continued.

“I made mistakes. I know that.””

Emily shook her head.

“Don’t.””

He ignored her.

“I lost everything after Emily.””

Emily looked hurt.

“You left.””

“I lost my home.””

“You abandoned it.””

“I lost my career.””

“You refused responsibility.””

Ryan turned away.

“I was trying to become someone better.””

Mom looked at him.

“By pretending to be someone else?””

Silence.

That question destroyed whatever argument he had left.

Daniel stepped backward.

“I should go.””

Mom looked at him.

“No.””

He stopped.

“You don’t get to leave.””

Daniel looked nervous.

“I’ve already explained.””

“No.””

She walked toward him.

“You admitted there was a plan.””

“Yes.””

“You admitted Ryan expected me to sign documents.””

“Yes.””

“You admitted you were involved.””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

Mom nodded.

“Then you can stay.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Amanda.””

She ignored him.

“Claire.””

The photographer looked up.

“Yes?””

“Do you still have everything?””

Claire understood immediately.

“The pictures?””

“The pictures.””

Claire nodded.

“I saved copies.””

“Good.””

Ryan looked alarmed.

“Why?””

Mom looked at him.

“Because I spent two years trusting my memory instead of my instincts.””

She held the camera.

“Now I’m trusting evidence.””

For the first time, Ryan looked defeated.

Not because he was sorry.

Because he realized the story was no longer his.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He looked down.

His face changed.

Mom noticed.

“Who is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Who?””

Slowly, he showed the screen.

A name appeared.

*Rachel Carter.*

My aunt.

Mom stared.

“She’s calling you?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

“Yes.””

Ryan immediately said:

“Don’t answer.””

Everyone turned toward him.

Mom’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Ryan froze.

Because he had just revealed something.

Another connection.

Another secret.

Daniel looked at Ryan.

“You said she wouldn’t call.””

Mom stepped forward.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody spoke.

Then the phone rang again.

Rachel.

Again.

And again.

Mom reached out.

“Put it on speaker.””

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

“Hello?””

Rachel’s voice came through immediately.

“Daniel, where are you?””

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at Ryan.

Rachel continued.

“Did Ryan tell you what happened?””

Mom looked at Ryan.

“What happened?””

Silence.

Then Rachel said something that made Ryan’s entire expression change.

“He promised me Amanda would never find out about the second account.””

Mom’s breath caught.

“Second account?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

Ryan looked trapped.

My mother whispered:

“What second account?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel said:

“And Ryan, if you’re there, tell Amanda the truth.””

The vineyard went still.

“Tell her what you did with her father’s money.””

My mother froze.

Her face changed.

Because this wasn’t just about the wedding anymore.

It wasn’t just about Ryan.

It was about her family.

Her past.

And something she thought had been buried years ago.

She slowly looked at Ryan.

“My father’s money?””

Ryan didn’t speak.

Mom took one step toward him.

“What did you do with my father’s money?””

Ryan stared at her.

May you like

And for the first time all day…

He looked completely terrified.
