Amused

Chapter 5: The Names Hidden Behind the Plan

Ryan didn’t answer.

That was the first thing my mother noticed.

Not the message.

Not the lawyer.

Not the documents waiting somewhere to take her life apart.

His silence.

Because when someone is innocent, they usually rush to explain.

They interrupt.

They defend themselves.

They grab onto every possible excuse.

Ryan just stood there.

And that scared everyone more than anything he could have said.

Mom looked at him.

“Who else knows?””

The question hung between them.

The vineyard that had been decorated for promises suddenly felt like a courtroom.

Ryan looked toward the guests.

Some were recording.

Some were whispering.

Some were quietly leaving.

He noticed.

And for the first time, I saw him understand that he had lost control.

“Amanda,” he said softly, “you’re making a mistake.””

My mother stared at him.

“A mistake?””

She looked down at the ring in his hand.

“The mistake was trusting you.””

Ryan’s expression hardened.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“You’re hurt.””

“Yes.””

“But you don’t know everything.””

Emily let out a quiet laugh.

“There it is again.””

Ryan looked at her.

“What?””

“You always do this.””

Emily stepped closer.

“You make people feel like they’re too emotional to understand what’s happening.””

Ryan looked away.

Mom noticed.

“What aren’t I supposed to know?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

“Ryan.””

Still nothing.

Claire lowered her camera slightly.

“I think we already know why he won’t answer.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Stay out of this.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“I was hired to capture your wedding.””

She looked at the guests.

“I never expected to capture evidence.””

A few people murmured.

Ryan turned back to my mother.

“Amanda, can we talk somewhere private?””

She almost smiled.

“Private?””

He looked confused.

“Yes.””

“The way you talked to Emily?””

Ryan’s face changed.

“The way you talked to Rachel?””

She pointed toward the phone.

“The way you wrote about me?””

Her voice cracked.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m done having private conversations with someone who built his entire life on secrets.””

Ryan took a breath.

“Fine.””

He looked around.

“Then everyone can hear.””

Mom didn’t move.

“Good.””

Ryan looked at the letter in her hand.

“You found something you weren’t supposed to find.””

Mom’s eyes narrowed.

“You mean the truth?””

“No.””

His voice became defensive.

“I mean something without context.””

Emily crossed her arms.

“Then give the context.””

Ryan looked at her.

“You really want to do this?””

“Yes.””

“Because you’re innocent?””

Emily’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Pain.

Ryan noticed too.

And he used it.

“You think you can come here and pretend you didn’t play a part?””

The guests went silent.

Mom looked at him.

“What are you doing?””

Ryan ignored her.

“Emily and I had problems long before I left.””

Emily stared.

“You left our house in the middle of the night.””

“You weren’t easy to live with.””

The words hit her.

Even after everything.

Even after all his lies.

He still found a way to hurt her.

Emily swallowed.

“I spent six years protecting your image.””

“And I spent six years unhappy.””

Mom looked between them.

“So you cheated?””

Ryan turned toward her.

“I didn’t cheat.””

Everyone froze.

Mom’s expression changed.

“Excuse me?””

Ryan hesitated.

Then said:

“My marriage was already over.””

Emily laughed.

“You never filed for divorce.””

“We were separated.””

“You were sleeping in another room.””

“Yes.””

“And still legally married.””

Ryan looked away.

“That’s complicated.””

“No.””

Emily shook her head.

“That’s convenient.””

My mother looked down at the documents Emily brought.

Then back at Ryan.

“Did you tell me you were divorced?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

“Did you?””

A long pause.

Finally:

“I said things were complicated.””

Mom stared.

“That’s not what I asked.””

Ryan’s shoulders dropped.

“No.””

The single word felt like a door closing.

Mom nodded slowly.

“Thank you.””

Ryan looked surprised.

“For what?””

“For finally telling the truth.””

The phone in Ryan’s hand buzzed again.

Everyone looked.

He immediately turned it over.

But Claire had already lifted her camera.

“Another message?””

Ryan glared.

“Stop photographing me.””

Claire didn’t lower it.

“Why?””

“Because you’re invading my privacy.””

She looked at him.

“You stopped caring about privacy when you planned to steal someone’s future.””

Ryan’s face darkened.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Then show us.””

Ryan said nothing.

Mom held out her hand.

“Phone.””

Ryan looked at her.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

That was all she needed.

Because if there was nothing to hide, he would have shown her.

Mom looked at Emily.

“Can you prove any of this?””

Emily nodded.

“Yes.””

She reached into her bag again.

This time, she pulled out a folder.

“I found the company Ryan created six months ago.””

Ryan’s face changed.

“What?””

Emily handed the folder to Mom.

“It’s an investment company.””

Mom opened it.

“Blake Capital?””

Emily nodded.

“Look at the address.””

Mom did.

Then she looked up.

“That’s my office building.””

Nobody spoke.

Emily continued.

“He registered it using an office suite in the same building where your financial advisor works.””

Mom stared at the papers.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted it to look legitimate.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Emily looked at him.

“Is it?””

She pulled out another document.

“This company was created two months before you proposed.””

Mom’s fingers froze.

“You proposed after creating it?””

Ryan looked desperate.

“Amanda, please.””

“No.””

She kept reading.

Emily continued.

“He needed access to your accounts.””

“I never gave him access.””

“Not yet.””

Mom looked up.

“What do you mean?””

Emily hesitated.

Then she handed her another paper.

“This.””

Mom read it.

Her face changed.

“What is this?””

Ryan looked away.

I watched the fear return.

Emily answered.

“Power of attorney.””

The words meant nothing to me.

But they meant everything to the adults.

Mom’s hand began shaking.

“You wanted me to sign this?””

Ryan stepped forward.

“It was just in case something happened.””

Emily shook her head.

“That’s what he tells everyone.””

Mom looked at him.

“Something happened?””

Ryan didn’t answer.

“You mean if I got sick?””

Silence.

“Or if I was unable to make decisions?””

Silence.

“Or if you needed control over my money?””

Ryan’s face hardened.

“You’re twisting this.””

Mom looked at him.

“No.””

She held up the paper.

“You were.””

For the first time, Ryan looked angry instead of afraid.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed for this relationship.””

Mom blinked.

“What you sacrificed?””

“Yes.””

His voice grew louder.

“I moved my entire life for you.””

Emily stared at him.

“You moved into her house.””

“I changed careers.””

“You changed careers because you couldn’t keep a job.””

Ryan turned.

“You don’t get to judge me.””

Emily laughed bitterly.

“No.””

She looked at my mother.

“But she gets to know.””

Ryan looked at me.

Then suddenly his expression softened.

“Sophie.””

I stepped closer to Mom.

“What?””

“I want you to know something.””

Mom immediately said:

“No.””

But I was already listening.

Ryan looked at me.

“I cared about you.””

The words hurt.

Because part of me wanted them to be true.

Part of me remembered the man who helped me build a treehouse.

The man who brought me hot chocolate when I was sick.

The man who promised he would always protect my mom.

Ryan continued.

“Everything I did was to make sure we had a good life.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did you lie?””

He had no answer.

And that was the saddest part.

Not because he didn’t know.

Because he did.

The officiant quietly approached.

“Amanda?””

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry.””

He nodded.

“You don’t have to apologize.””

Mom looked around.

At the guests.

At the ruined ceremony.

At the man she almost married.

Then she took my hand.

“We’re leaving.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Amanda.””

She stopped.

“I’m not finished.””

Everyone turned.

Because her voice had changed.

She wasn’t asking anymore.

She was demanding.

“You said there were documents.””

Ryan stayed silent.

“You said the transfer was ready.””

Still silent.

“Who prepared them?””

Ryan looked down.

Mom stepped closer.

“Who helped you?””

A long pause.

Then his phone buzzed again.

This time, he looked.

And his face completely changed.

Not fear.

Shock.

Because the message was not from his lawyer.

It was from someone else.

Someone who had been standing among the wedding guests the entire time.

The message said:

*“Stop talking. I’m fixing this.””*

Mom saw the name on the screen.

And she whispered:

“No…”

I looked at her.

“Who is it?””

She didn’t answer.

She just stared at the crowd.

At the people who had come to celebrate her marriage.

Because one of them wasn’t a guest.

May you like

One of them was part of Ryan’s plan.

And they were still here.
