Amused

Chapter 3: The Secret Written in His Own Hand

Ryan’s fingers closed around the letter so quickly that for a moment, nobody reacted.

It happened in a single movement.

One second, I was holding the paper.

The next, he was standing in front of me, his face twisted with panic, the letter crushed in his fist.

My mother’s voice cut through the silence.

“Ryan.””

He stopped.

Not because she shouted.

Because she didn’t.

Her voice was quiet.

And that was worse.

“Give that back to Sophie.””

Ryan looked at the paper.

Then at her.

“Amanda, this is private.””

The words landed harder than a scream.

My mother stared at him.

“Private?””

She pointed toward the vineyard.

“At our wedding?””

Ryan swallowed.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” she said.

“I understand that you just grabbed something from an eight-year-old child because you didn’t want me to read it.””

The guests shifted uncomfortably.

Some looked away.

Some looked directly at Ryan.

For the first time all day, nobody was protecting him.

Ryan looked at Emily.

“You brought her here for this?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at my mother.

“I came here because I wanted Amanda to know the truth.””

Her eyes moved back to him.

“But I didn’t know there was a letter.””

Ryan’s face tightened.

“Because there wasn’t supposed to be.””

That sentence made everyone freeze.

Mom stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan realized what he had said.

His mouth opened.

Then closed.

He had spent the entire morning trying to control the story.

But now the story was controlling him.

Emily’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“You wrote something about me.””

Ryan said nothing.

“You wrote something about Amanda.””

Still nothing.

She looked at the paper in his hand.

“Read it.””

Ryan shook his head.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because it doesn’t matter.””

Emily laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Funny. That’s what you said when you left me.””

Mom looked at him.

“You left her?””

Ryan looked at the ground.

“Amanda…”

“No.””

Her face hardened.

“I want the truth.””

Ryan’s shoulders lowered slightly.

“I made mistakes.””

Emily stared at him.

“Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary. Mistakes are saying the wrong thing during an argument.””

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t accidentally hide a marriage.””

The words hung in the air.

I watched my mother’s face.

She looked exhausted.

Like every second she spent listening was another piece of her heart breaking.

Claire slowly stepped closer.

“Amanda.””

Mom looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Claire shook her head.

“You didn’t do anything wrong.””

She glanced at Ryan.

“But someone did.””

Ryan suddenly turned toward her.

“You need to leave.””

Claire blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“You’ve caused enough damage.””

Claire looked almost surprised.

Then she smiled sadly.

“No, Ryan. I took pictures. You caused the damage.””

A few guests nodded quietly.

Ryan looked around.

The beautiful wedding he had planned was disappearing in front of him.

The flowers.

The music.

The people he wanted to impress.

All of it was becoming evidence.

Mom held out her hand.

“Give me the letter.””

Ryan didn’t move.

“Please.””

The word came from her.

Not as a wife.

Not as someone begging him.

As someone who needed one final piece of truth.

Slowly, Ryan handed it over.

My mother took it.

She unfolded the paper carefully.

The first line was still visible.

*Amanda will never know what happened in Denver.*

Mom stopped.

Her eyes moved across the page.

I watched every emotion pass through her face.

Confusion.

Fear.

Then something else.

Recognition.

“What happened in Denver?””

Ryan looked away.

“Amanda, don’t.””

She looked up.

“What happened in Denver?””

Nobody answered.

So she kept reading.

The paper shook slightly in her hands.

I moved closer.

“Mom?””

She didn’t respond.

Emily stepped forward.

“What does it say?””

Mom looked at her.

Then back at the letter.

“Ryan wrote that he had to make sure Emily never contacted him again.””

Emily’s expression changed.

“He wrote that?””

Mom nodded slowly.

“He wrote that if Emily found out about me, everything would fall apart.””

Ryan’s face went pale.

“That’s not the full context.””

Emily stared at him.

“Then explain it.””

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

“You’re twisting it.””

“How?””

“Because you don’t know what I was dealing with.””

Emily’s voice became sharper.

“What were you dealing with, Ryan?””

He didn’t answer.

She stepped closer.

“Your wife?””

Silence.

“Your family?””

Silence.

“Your own choices?””

Still silence.

Mom kept reading.

Then she stopped again.

“What is this?””

Her voice was different now.

Not angry.

Confused.

She looked at Ryan.

“Why did you write that you needed access to my trust fund?””

The air changed.

I didn’t understand what she meant.

But everyone else seemed to.

Emily’s eyes narrowed.

“Trust fund?””

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“That’s not what it sounds like.””

Mom looked at the page.

“It says, ‘Once Amanda signs the papers, the house will be transferred and the accounts can be combined.’”

She looked up.

“Ryan.””

He stepped toward her.

“Amanda, listen.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“You married me for my money?””

The guests reacted immediately.

Some whispered.

Some gasped.

Ryan’s expression changed from panic to anger.

“You’re making me sound like a criminal.””

Emily looked at him.

“What would you call it?””

He turned toward her.

“You don’t know anything.””

“I know you stopped paying our bills before you left.””

“That was different.””

“I know you emptied our savings account.””

Ryan looked away.

“I was trying to start over.””

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“With my money.””

Mom lowered the letter.

My small hand found hers.

She squeezed it.

I could feel her shaking.

Ryan noticed.

“Sophie shouldn’t be hearing this.””

Mom looked at him.

“You’re right.””

For a second, he looked relieved.

Then she continued.

“She shouldn’t have had to discover it.””

The relief disappeared.

Ryan looked at me.

“Sophie, go with Claire for a minute.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Sophie.””

“No.””

My voice was small.

But I meant it.

“You always tell Mom not to lie.””

Ryan froze.

I continued.

“So why are you lying?””

Nobody spoke.

Even Ryan had no answer.

The silence was broken by Emily.

“There’s more.””

Mom looked at her.

“More?””

Emily nodded.

“When I found out Ryan was getting married, I started looking into where he had been for the last two years.””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“You had no right.””

“I found something.””

“What?””

Emily looked at my mother.

“He wasn’t just hiding our marriage.””

She took a breath.

“He was hiding another woman.””

The guests erupted into whispers.

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“No.””

Emily didn’t look away.

“She was in Denver.””

Mom’s face went still.

“Denver?””

Ryan’s eyes widened.

“Amanda.””

But Emily continued.

“The same city he wrote about in that letter.””

Mom looked down at the page again.

Her fingers tightened.

“What woman?””

Emily reached into her bag.

She pulled out another photograph.

Not from Claire’s camera.

An older one.

She handed it to my mother.

Mom looked at it.

And the moment she did, she stopped.

Because the woman in the picture wasn’t Emily.

It wasn’t Claire.

It wasn’t some stranger.

It was someone my mother knew.

Someone who had hugged her.

Someone who had sat at our dinner table.

Someone who had helped plan this wedding.

Mom’s lips parted.

“No…”

Ryan closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

She knew.

“Who is she?”” I whispered.

Mom didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

The photograph slipped slightly from her fingers.

And then she said a name.

A name that made Ryan finally lose control.

“My sister.””

Everyone looked confused.

I looked at my mother.

Her voice trembled.

“Ryan was with my sister.””

The vineyard exploded into chaos.

Ryan stepped forward.

“Amanda, let me explain.””

But she backed away from him.

“No.””

“Amanda.””

“No!””

For the first time all day, my mother screamed.

She held the photograph against her chest.

“How long?””

Ryan said nothing.

“How long were you seeing her?””

His silence was enough.

Emily looked at him with disbelief.

“You didn’t tell her?””

Mom stared.

“You mean there’s more?””

Ryan’s face changed.

And that was when I understood something.

The picture.

The letter.

The secret wife.

They weren’t the whole story.

They were only the beginning.

Because Ryan Blake hadn’t just built one lie.

He had built an entire life out of them.

Then his phone suddenly rang.

Everyone looked at the sound.

Ryan reached into his pocket.

The screen lit up.

And even from where I stood, I could see the name.

*Amanda’s sister.*

Ryan stared at the phone.

Nobody moved.

May you like

Then my mother whispered:

“Answer it.””
