Chapter 4: The Call That Exposed Everything
The phone continued ringing.
The sound seemed impossibly loud against the silence of the vineyard.
Everyone stared at Ryan.
Nobody looked at the flowers anymore.
Nobody looked at the decorations.
Nobody cared about the half-finished ceremony waiting beneath the arbor.
There was only one thing left.
The name glowing on his screen.
*Rachel Carter.*
My aunt.
My mother’s younger sister.
The woman who had helped Mom choose her wedding dress.
The woman who had brought me ice cream after school.
The woman who always told me I was lucky to have Ryan in my life.
The woman standing in the photograph with him.
Mom’s face had gone completely pale.
“Answer it.””
Ryan didn’t move.
“Mom,” I whispered.
She didn’t look at me.
Her eyes stayed on him.
“Answer the phone, Ryan.””
His fingers tightened around the device.
“Amanda, this isn’t the place.””
A bitter smile crossed my mother’s face.
“Is that what you’re worried about?””
She looked around.
“At the wedding you almost had?””
Ryan lowered the phone slightly.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” Mom said.
“I think I’m finally starting to.””
The call ended.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then the phone rang again.
Ryan looked at the screen.
Rachel was calling back.
Emily crossed her arms.
“She doesn’t want to hide anymore.””
Ryan looked at her.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Emily shook her head.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
Mom held out her hand.
“Put it on speaker.””
Ryan stared at her.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“Amanda—”
“Put it on speaker.””
Her voice was calm.
But there was something different about her now.
The woman who had walked down that aisle an hour earlier was gone.
The woman standing there now was someone who had been hurt, but was refusing to let anyone control the ending.
Ryan looked around.
Everyone was watching.
Slowly, he answered.
Then he pressed the speaker button.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only breathing.
Then a familiar voice came through.
“Ryan?””
My stomach twisted.
I knew that voice.
I had heard it at birthday parties.
At Christmas dinners.
At family gatherings.
“Aunt Rachel?”” I whispered.
Mom closed her eyes.
Rachel went silent.
Then she said:
“Sophie?””
Nobody spoke.
Rachel realized what was happening.
“Oh my God.””
Ryan immediately stepped forward.
“Rachel, listen to me.””
“No.””
Her voice cracked.
“No, you listen to me.””
The confidence disappeared from Ryan’s face.
“Why are you there?””
Rachel didn’t answer.
Mom stepped closer to the phone.
“Rachel.””
The silence on the other end felt painful.
“Amanda…”
My mother laughed quietly.
A broken sound.
“That’s all you have to say?””
“I can explain.””
“No.””
Mom shook her head.
“I’m tired of explanations.””
Ryan interrupted.
“Rachel, tell her the truth.””
Everyone looked at him.
Even Emily seemed surprised.
Ryan continued.
“You owe her that.””
My mother stared at him.
“You’re blaming her?””
“I’m saying there are things you don’t know.””
Emily’s expression hardened.
“Of course.””
She looked at Mom.
“That’s what he does.””
Mom looked back at the phone.
“Rachel, how long?””
No answer.
“Rachel.””
A shaky breath came through the speaker.
“Two years.””
The guests gasped.
Mom closed her eyes.
Two years.
The exact amount of time Ryan had been in our lives.
The exact amount of time he had been building his place inside our family.
I felt my mother’s hand tremble.
“You were seeing him for two years?””
Rachel started crying.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
Mom stared at the phone.
“You never wanted what to happen?””
Silence.
“Me finding out?””
Another silence.
“Or you hurting me?””
Rachel’s crying got louder.
“I love you.””
Mom looked like those words hurt more than anything else.
“Don’t say that.””
“Amanda—”
“Don’t say you love me while you’re standing beside the man who was lying to me.””
Ryan stepped in.
“Rachel and I were going to tell you.””
Emily laughed.
Nobody expected it.
Especially Ryan.
“You were going to tell her?””
Emily shook her head.
“When?””
Ryan looked at her.
“Stop.””
“No, really.””
Emily’s voice became sharper.
“When were you going to tell her? After you took her house? After she transferred her money? After she signed whatever documents you needed?””
Ryan’s face turned red.
“That’s enough.””
Mom looked at him.
“Is it true?””
He didn’t answer.
“Ryan.””
“I was trying to protect our future.””
“Our future?””
She looked down at her wedding ring.
The ring he had given her.
“The future you planned with my sister?””
Ryan stepped closer.
“Amanda, Rachel and I made mistakes.””
Mom looked disgusted.
“Mistakes.””
She repeated the word softly.
“Everyone keeps calling them mistakes.””
She looked at me.
“Sophie, remember when I told you that people show you who they are?””
I nodded.
She looked back at Ryan.
“I should have listened.””
Ryan’s face softened.
“Amanda, I love you.””
The words sounded wrong.
Even he seemed to know it.
Emily stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Ryan looked at her.
“You don’t get to tell me what I feel.””
Emily’s eyes filled with anger.
“No. But I know what you do.””
She pointed at him.
“You replace people.””
Nobody spoke.
“You don’t leave. You don’t end things. You find someone new and build another story before the old one collapses.””
Ryan looked away.
Emily continued.
“You did it with me.””
She looked at my mother.
“And now you did it with her.””
Rachel suddenly spoke through the phone.
“Amanda, please.””
My mother looked at the phone.
“Why?””
“I was lonely.””
The words shocked everyone.
Rachel continued.
“I know that doesn’t make it right.””
“No,” Mom said.
“It doesn’t.””
Rachel cried harder.
“I was angry at you.””
Mom frowned.
“Angry?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
The pause lasted several seconds.
Then Rachel said:
“Because after Dad died, everyone looked at you.””
My mother froze.
I knew what she meant.
After my grandfather died, Mom had become the person everyone depended on.
She handled the funeral.
She helped Rachel through college.
She supported the family.
But I had never heard Rachel say this before.
“I felt invisible,” Rachel whispered.
Mom’s eyes filled with tears.
“So you chose my fiancé?””
“I didn’t plan it.””
“But you continued.””
Rachel didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
I watched my mother wipe her tears.
Not dramatically.
Not like the movies.
Just one small movement.
Like she was refusing to let anyone see how badly she was hurting.
Ryan suddenly looked at me.
“Sophie, go inside.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“This isn’t for you.””
I stared at him.
“You keep saying that.””
His expression changed.
“What?””
“You keep saying things aren’t for me.””
I looked around at all the adults.
“But I’m the one who found the picture.””
Ryan went quiet.
“I’m the one who stopped the wedding.””
Nobody spoke.
“And I’m the one who has to hear everyone tell my mom they’re sorry.””
My voice shook.
“But nobody is saying sorry to me.””
Mom immediately turned toward me.
“Sophie…”
I looked down.
“I trusted him too.””
That was the sentence that finally broke Ryan’s expression.
Because for the first time, he looked ashamed.
Not caught.
Not angry.
Ashamed.
But it lasted only a moment.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
He looked down.
And his entire face changed.
Emily noticed.
“What is it?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
Mom stepped closer.
“What happened?””
He locked the screen.
“Nothing.””
Nobody believed him.
Claire slowly raised her camera.
“I got a picture of the message.””
Ryan turned.
“You did what?””
Claire held up the camera.
“You forgot everyone here has been watching.””
Ryan stepped toward her.
“Delete it.””
“No.””
His voice became dangerous.
“Claire.””
She didn’t move.
“I think Amanda deserves to see.””
Mom looked at Claire.
“Show me.””
Claire pressed a few buttons.
Then turned the camera screen around.
Mom looked.
Then Emily looked.
Then everyone watched their faces change.
Because the message wasn’t from Rachel.
It wasn’t from some stranger.
It was from a number labeled:
*Lawyer.*
The message contained only one sentence.
But it was enough.
*“The transfer documents are ready. Once the wedding is completed, everything will be finalized.””*
Mom stared at the screen.
Then she slowly looked at Ryan.
“The wedding.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“That’s why you needed today.””
Ryan said nothing.
Mom took one step back.
“You weren’t marrying me.””
The wind moved through the vines.
“You were waiting for me to sign.””
Ryan opened his mouth.
But no words came.
And then Emily whispered something that made every person at the vineyard turn toward Ryan.
“Ryan Blake never wanted a wife.””
She looked at my mother.
“He wanted an access point.””
My mother looked down at the ring on her finger.
Then she removed it.
And placed it in Ryan’s hand.
“Tell me one thing.””
Ryan looked at her.
“What?””
Her eyes were full of tears.
“But this time, tell me the truth.””
A long silence passed.
May you like
Then she asked:
“Who else knows about this plan?””
