Amused

Chapter 9: Michael's Voice

The cassette player in the archive room was ancient.

Carter found it in a locked drawer beneath the records.

He placed the tape inside.

My hands were shaking.

Claire stood against the wall.

Emily held Jonathan's hand.

Carter pressed Play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

Weak.

Breathing heavily.

But unmistakable.

My brother.

"Mark.""

I closed my eyes.

For twenty-two years, I had heard Michael's voice only in memory.

Now it was speaking to me from a plastic cassette.

"If you're hearing this, then I'm dead.""

Claire covered her mouth.

Michael continued.

"I don't know when you'll hear this. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe twenty years from now.""

A pause.

"But if Richard found the tape, he'll probably destroy it.""

Carter looked down.

Michael's voice continued.

"Mark, I'm sorry.""

My eyes burned.

"I should have told you everything.""

The tape crackled.

"I met Claire before you did.""

I looked at her.

She lowered her head.

"We were young. Stupid. We thought we had time.""

Michael laughed softly.

"We didn't.""

The recording continued.

"When Claire became pregnant, Daniel believed the child was his.""

A pause.

"He wasn't.""

Jonathan stared at the speaker.

"Neither child was his.""

My chest tightened.

"One belonged to me.""

"And the other belonged to Mark.""

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

Michael continued.

"I didn't know there were twins until the delivery.""

The tape hissed.

"Richard found out before we did.""

I leaned closer.

"He took the DNA samples. He wanted proof.""

"Not because he cared about the children.""

"Because he needed leverage.""

Michael's breathing became heavier.

"Richard was stealing money through the company. Daniel helped him move it. They needed someone they could control.""

"Claire became that person.""

Claire whispered, "I'm sorry.""

Michael continued.

"Daniel threatened the children.""

"If Claire didn't cooperate, he'd make sure neither baby survived.""

I felt sick.

"So Claire lied.""

"She told everyone the girl was born in October.""

"She told Daniel the boy was his.""

"She told Mark nothing.""

I looked at Claire.

Michael's voice softened.

"She was trying to save them.""

The tape clicked.

Then continued.

"Mark, you need to understand what happened on June 17.""

My hands went cold.

"You came home early.""

"You found Claire at the hospital.""

"You found Daniel there.""

"And you found me.""

I stared at the speaker.

"You were angry.""

"You thought Claire had betrayed you.""

"You didn't know the truth.""

Michael paused.

"Then Daniel told you the boy was yours.""

I felt a flash of memory.

The hospital hallway.

Daniel's face.

A baby crying.

Michael holding something.

"You believed him.""

"Because he showed you a birth certificate.""

I looked at Carter.

"Which one?""

Carter didn't answer.

Michael continued.

"It was fake.""

"The real certificate had both children's names.""

"Daniel wanted it.""

"I took it.""

"Then I tried to get the babies out.""

My heart hammered.

"The crash wasn't an accident.""

Claire began crying.

"Richard followed me.""

"I drove north.""

"He rammed my car.""

The recording crackled.

"I survived.""

I stopped breathing.

"I survived the crash.""

"But Daniel thought I was dead.""

"I crawled out.""

"I found Claire.""

"She had the children.""

Michael's voice became quieter.

"And I made her promise something.""

"She had to give the babies away.""

Emily whispered, "Why?""

Michael answered as if he'd heard her.

"Because if they stayed with us, they would die.""

"Claire took the girl.""

"I took the boy.""

"She believed I would bring him somewhere safe.""

"I did.""

Jonathan was crying now.

Michael continued.

"But there was another problem.""

"Mark.""

I froze.

"You were being watched.""

"Richard knew you were the biological father of the girl.""

"He planned to use her against you.""

"So I created a lie.""

"I made everyone believe both children were dead.""

I closed my eyes.

Michael's voice trembled.

"I told Claire never to tell Mark.""

"Not until Richard was gone.""

The tape hissed.

"He wasn't gone.""

"He built a new life.""

"He changed his name.""

"He kept watching.""

"Eight years ago, I thought it was finally safe.""

"But I was wrong.""

Carter stepped forward.

I looked at him.

Michael continued.

"I found Richard.""

"I thought I could expose him.""

"He found me first.""

The recording stopped.

Static.

Then silence.

I stared at the cassette.

"That's it?""

Carter nodded.

"There's more.""

He turned the tape over.

The second side began.

Michael's voice returned.

"Mark, if you're hearing Side B, then Carter kept his promise.""

I looked at the detective.

Michael continued.

"Carter knows where the original certificates are.""

Carter closed his eyes.

"And he knows who raised Jonathan.""

Jonathan looked at him.

"Who?""

Michael answered.

"Mark's father.""

I turned toward Carter.

"What?""

Michael continued.

"Your father knew everything.""

My mind went blank.

"My father died in 2009.""

"I know.""

"He knew about Jonathan?""

"He knew about both children.""

"Why?""

"Because I brought Jonathan to him.""

Jonathan stepped backward.

"No.""

Michael's voice continued.

"Your father raised the boy.""

"For three years.""

"Then he gave him to the Bennetts.""

I looked at Jonathan.

"That's why you have our last name.""

He nodded slowly.

Michael continued.

"Your father also kept the original certificates.""

"Because someday, Mark would need to know.""

I stared at Carter.

"Where are they?""

Carter finally spoke.

"At the farmhouse.""

I shook my head.

"We searched the farmhouse.""

"Not the basement.""

"We were in the basement.""

"The hidden room.""

"We searched it.""

Carter looked at me.

"Not behind the wall.""

My stomach tightened.

"What wall?""

He pointed toward the cassette player.

"The wall behind the photographs.""

We returned to the farmhouse before dawn.

The rain had stopped.

The house was silent.

Carter led us downstairs.

He removed three photographs from the wall.

Behind them was a narrow steel compartment.

He entered a combination.

The door opened.

Inside was a small metal box.

My hands trembled as I lifted it out.

There were two birth certificates.

Original.

Official.

Untouched.

One read:

*Jonathan Michael Bennett.*

Father:

*Michael Bennett.*

Mother:

*Claire Bennett.*

The second read:

*Emily Claire Bennett.*

Father:

*Mark Bennett.*

Mother:

*Claire Bennett.*

I stared at my daughter's name.

For the first time in twenty-two years, I saw the truth printed in black ink.

Emily stepped beside me.

"That's me.""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

She touched the paper.

"I really am your daughter.""

I pulled her close.

"I never needed a certificate to know that.""

She cried against my shoulder.

Jonathan stood a few feet away.

I looked at him.

"And you.""

He wiped his face.

"What?""

"You're my nephew.""

He smiled through tears.

"Yeah.""

I pulled him into a hug.

He stiffened for a second.

Then hugged me back.

For one brief moment, the room felt peaceful.

Then Carter's phone rang.

He answered.

"Hello?""

His expression changed.

He handed me the phone.

"It's Daniel.""

I put it to my ear.

"Where are you?""

Daniel laughed softly.

"You're holding the certificates.""

I looked at the box.

"How do you know?""

"Because I know where everything is.""

"Where is Emily?""

"With you.""

"Then what do you want?""

"I want the originals.""

"No.""

"You don't understand.""

"Try me.""

Daniel's voice became cold.

"Richard isn't dead.""

"I know.""

"He has the children.""

My blood froze.

"Which children?""

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

"All three.""

I looked at Jonathan.

Then Emily.

"There's only two.""

Daniel laughed.

"No.""

My stomach dropped.

"You've forgotten the third.""

I couldn't speak.

Daniel continued.

"Your wife gave birth to another child.""

I turned toward Claire.

She had gone completely white.

"Claire?""

She shook her head.

Daniel said:

"Ask her about the baby she gave away in 2004.""

The call ended.

I stared at Claire.

"2004?""

She couldn't look at me.

"Claire.""

Nothing.

"Who was born in 2004?""

She whispered something.

I couldn't hear.

"What?""

Her eyes finally met mine.

"The child wasn't yours.""

My heart stopped.

"Then whose?""

Claire's lips trembled.

"Michael's.""

Jonathan stared at her.

"Another child?""

She nodded.

Then the farmhouse door upstairs slammed shut.

A man's voice echoed through the house.

"Claire.""

We all froze.

The voice was older.

But familiar.

It belonged to a man I had buried in my memory.

A man I had watched die.

Richard Hale.

May you like

And he called out one more sentence.

"Bring me my daughter.""
