Chapter 3: June 2003
I didn't sleep that night.
At 2:13 a.m., I was sitting at the kitchen table with the old photograph in front of me.
Claire.
Daniel Mercer.
June 2003.
The date kept circling through my head.
I opened my laptop and searched through old files.
Travel receipts.
Credit card statements.
Work schedules.
Anything from that week.
At 2:41, I found the first thing I hadn't remembered.
A hotel receipt.
Seattle.
June 16.
Check-in: 7:18 p.m.
Check-out: June 19.
I stared at it.
Then I found an old email from my boss.
*Mark — Conference starts Tuesday morning. Safe travels.*
I had remembered that trip clearly.
Or I thought I had.
At 3:07, I found another document.
A flight change confirmation.
My return flight had originally been scheduled for June 18.
But I had changed it.
To June 19.
Why?
I couldn't remember.
I shut the laptop.
There are moments when your own memories become suspects.
You start questioning details you once considered permanent.
At 7:30 the next morning, I drove to work.
I lasted forty minutes.
Then I left.
There was one person I could ask.
My old friend, Tom.
Tom had worked with me in 2003.
I found him at a coffee shop near his office.
He looked at me for a long moment before saying, "You look terrible.""
"I need to ask you about Seattle.""
His smile disappeared.
"What about it?""
"June 2003.""
He slowly put his coffee down.
"Why?""
"Because something happened while I was there.""
Tom didn't answer.
"Tom.""
He looked away.
"You don't remember?""
"Remember what?""
He rubbed his jaw.
"Jesus, Mark.""
"What?""
He lowered his voice.
"You came back early.""
I stared at him.
"No, I didn't.""
"Yes, you did.""
"I was there until Thursday.""
"You were there Tuesday night.""
"Tom.""
"You called me from the airport Wednesday afternoon.""
I felt my heart pounding.
"Why would I do that?""
"You said there was a family emergency.""
"What family emergency?""
"I don't know.""
"Did I tell you Claire was involved?""
"No.""
"Did I tell you Emily was sick?""
"No.""
"Then what?""
Tom looked at me.
"You said you had to get home.""
I stood there, unable to breathe.
"Did I make it home that night?""
"Yeah.""
"Are you sure?""
"Mark, I drove you from the airport.""
The coffee shop seemed suddenly too loud.
"You drove me?""
"Yes.""
"To my house?""
"Yes.""
"Was Claire there?""
Tom hesitated.
"Yes.""
"Was Emily?""
"She was asleep.""
I sat down again.
"Did I see Claire?""
"Briefly.""
"What happened?""
"You two argued.""
My hands went cold.
"About what?""
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
Tom stared at the table.
"I'm not.""
"You know something.""
He sighed.
"I knew something was wrong.""
"What did Claire say?""
"Nothing.""
"What did I say?""
Tom looked at me.
"You kept asking her who Daniel was.""
The room went silent.
I felt as though someone had reached into my chest and squeezed my heart.
"I knew his name?""
"Yes.""
"Then why don't I remember him?""
Tom's expression changed.
"You were drunk.""
"I don't drink.""
"You did that night.""
"How much?""
"Enough.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"You were angry.""
"About Daniel?""
"I think so.""
"Did I accuse Claire of cheating?""
Tom didn't answer.
"Tom.""
"Yes.""
The word barely came out.
I leaned back.
For twenty-two years, I had believed I had never suspected Claire.
But apparently I had.
Then something had happened.
Something I had forgotten.
Or something someone had made sure I forgot.
I drove straight home.
Emily was waiting in the kitchen.
"Where were you?""
"I talked to Tom.""
She went pale.
"About 2003?""
"Yes.""
"What did he say?""
"That I knew Daniel.""
She sat down.
"Did Mom know you were asking questions?""
"I don't know.""
Emily stared at her phone.
Then it rang.
Claire.
Emily looked at me.
"Answer it.""
She hesitated.
"Put it on speaker.""
Emily answered.
"Mom?""
Claire's voice was barely audible.
"Where are you?""
"Home.""
"Is your father there?""
Emily looked at me.
"Yes.""
A long silence.
Then Claire said, "Don't tell him anything.""
My jaw tightened.
"Claire.""
She inhaled sharply.
"Mark?""
"You have ten seconds to explain Daniel.""
Silence.
"Where did you get that name?""
"From our daughter.""
Claire's voice broke.
"Emily, I told you—"
"You lied to me," Emily said.
"I'm trying to protect you.""
"From what?""
Claire started crying.
"From your father.""
I felt something go cold inside me.
"What did I do?""
"You don't remember.""
"Remember what?""
"You came home that night.""
"I know.""
"No," she whispered.
"You don't know.""
"Then tell me.""
"I can't.""
"Claire.""
"I can't tell you over the phone.""
"Where are you?""
She didn't answer.
"Where are you?""
"I need to see you.""
"Where?""
Another pause.
"Tomorrow.""
"Where?""
She gave me an address.
An old motel on the outskirts of Portland.
Then she said, "Come alone.""
I looked at Emily.
"No.""
Claire's voice trembled.
"Mark, please.""
"Not after what you've done.""
"I didn't leave because I stopped loving you.""
The words hit me harder than I expected.
"Then why?""
She began to speak.
"Because if you remember what happened in that hospital, you'll understand why I—"
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Emily was crying.
"What happened in that hospital?""
"I don't know.""
"She knows.""
"Yes.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Claire and Daniel.
June 2003.
The hospital record.
The missing birth certificate.
The twenty thousand dollars.
All of it pointed backward.
Toward one week I'd spent twenty-two years remembering incorrectly.
At noon, I drove to the motel.
Claire was waiting in Room 214.
She opened the door halfway.
Her face looked older than it had three weeks earlier.
"You're alone?""
"Yes.""
She opened the door.
I stepped inside.
A single lamp lit the room.
Claire sat on the edge of the bed.
I stayed standing.
"Start talking.""
She looked at me.
"Do you remember June 17, 2003?""
"Pieces.""
"Do you remember the hospital?""
"No.""
She closed her eyes.
"I knew you wouldn't.""
"What does that mean?""
She reached into her purse.
For a moment, I thought she was going to give me the birth certificate.
Instead, she pulled out a small envelope.
She placed it on the bed.
"This is why I took the twenty thousand.""
I stared at it.
"What's inside?""
"Something Daniel has been using to control me.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because the last time you found out, someone almost died.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"Who?""
Claire looked at me.
Then she whispered a name I hadn't heard in twenty-two years.
"Your brother.""
I froze.
"My brother died in 2003.""
"I know.""
"Then what does he have to do with Daniel?""
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"Everything.""
She pushed the envelope toward me.
"Open it.""
I reached for it.
Before my fingers touched the paper, Claire's phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face went white.
"It's Daniel.""
I looked at her.
"Answer it.""
"No.""
"Answer it.""
She shook her head.
Then the phone stopped ringing.
A second later, mine began.
Unknown number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a man's voice said quietly:
"Mark, Claire has told you one lie.""
I stood perfectly still.
The voice continued.
May you like
"Your brother wasn't the person who died that night.""
And the line went dead.
