Chapter 7: The Farmhouse
The farmhouse looked smaller than I remembered.
Maybe that was what secrets did to places.
They made them grow in your mind until the walls became enormous, the doors impossible to open, the rooms too dark to enter.
But standing in the driveway at 11:48 p.m., I saw the same peeling white paint, the same sagging porch, the same oak tree leaning over the roof.
No lights.
No cars.
I turned off my engine.
David's warning played in my head.
Bring the photograph of Michael's watch.
I had it in my pocket.
I stepped out.
The cold air smelled of wet earth and cedar.
I walked toward the house.
"Emily?""
No answer.
I tried the front door.
Unlocked.
My stomach tightened.
"Emily?""
The hallway was dark.
Then a floorboard creaked upstairs.
I looked up.
A shadow moved across the landing.
"Who's there?""
A young man's voice answered.
"You're early.""
I froze.
Jonathan.
I knew it immediately.
He stepped into the light from the upstairs window.
Twenty-two years old.
Dark hair.
Blue eyes.
The same eyes I'd seen every morning in the mirror for most of my life.
He looked at me without smiling.
"You look like him.""
I swallowed.
"Like who?""
"Michael.""
My brother.
I climbed the stairs slowly.
"Where's Emily?""
"She's safe.""
"Where?""
He pointed toward the bedroom.
I opened the door.
Emily was sitting on the floor, her back against the wall.
She jumped up.
"Dad.""
I pulled her into my arms.
She held on tightly.
"I'm sorry.""
"It's okay.""
"No, it isn't.""
I looked at her.
"What happened?""
She glanced at Jonathan.
"I found him.""
"How?""
"Mom left something at the house.""
"What?""
"A key.""
She reached into her pocket and showed me a small brass key.
"She told me never to use it.""
"Where did it open?""
"The basement.""
I looked toward the hallway.
"There isn't a basement.""
Jonathan spoke quietly.
"There is.""
He walked past us.
"Follow me.""
We went downstairs.
The basement door was hidden behind a panel beneath the staircase.
Jonathan inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
I turned on my phone flashlight.
Dust floated through the beam.
At the bottom was a room I had never seen.
Old shelves.
Metal filing cabinets.
Boxes.
And photographs covering one wall.
Photographs of me.
My office.
My house.
Emily at school.
Claire leaving the grocery store.
Michael.
Daniel.
Richard Hale.
My hands went cold.
"How long has someone been watching us?""
Jonathan shook his head.
"I don't know.""
"Who owns this place?""
"Your wife's father did.""
"Then why is all this here?""
"Because this wasn't just your wife's family house.""
I looked at him.
"What was it?""
"A meeting place.""
"For Daniel?""
"For Richard.""
I walked toward the photographs.
There were bank statements pinned beneath them.
Company records.
Copies of passports.
Fake names.
And a photograph of Michael standing beside a car.
The same car from the old photograph.
I touched it.
"When was this taken?""
"June 17, 2003.""
"Before he died?""
"Hours before.""
Jonathan pointed toward a document.
"He wrote something on the back.""
I picked it up.
Three words.
*Trust Mark.*
My throat tightened.
"He knew I was coming.""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he was trying to get you out.""
"Out of what?""
Jonathan looked at me.
"Your life.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
He walked to another cabinet.
"My father believed you knew too much.""
"Your father?""
"Daniel.""
The word still felt wrong.
"Why does he call me his father if I'm not?""
"Because biologically, he is.""
I stared at him.
"And I?""
Jonathan's expression softened.
"You raised me.""
"I didn't.""
"You did.""
"What?""
He pulled out a stack of letters.
"They were sent to me over the years.""
"From Claire?""
"Some.""
He handed me one.
The handwriting was hers.
I opened it.
*Jonathan,*
*Your father doesn't know you're alive.*
*The man who raised you is a good man. Don't hate him for keeping you. He believed he was protecting you.*
I looked up.
"Who raised you?""
"Paul and Margaret Bennett.""
My breath caught.
"That was my parents' last name.""
Jonathan nodded.
"They adopted me.""
"Adopted?""
"Yes.""
I looked at the letter again.
"Why did they have my last name?""
"Because Michael arranged it.""
I sat down.
The pieces began shifting.
Michael hadn't been running from Daniel.
He had been hiding Jonathan.
And somehow, my parents had become part of it.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?""
Jonathan looked at me.
"Because Michael believed you were being watched.""
"By Richard.""
"Yes.""
I stood.
"Where is Richard now?""
"Dead.""
"When?""
"Eight years ago.""
I stared at him.
"How?""
"Heart attack.""
I almost laughed.
"Everyone connected to this story dies of convenient causes.""
Jonathan didn't smile.
"Not everyone.""
A noise came from upstairs.
We all froze.
Footsteps.
Emily grabbed my arm.
"Someone's here.""
I looked at Jonathan.
"How many exits?""
"One.""
"Then we stay together.""
The footsteps moved across the floor above us.
Slowly.
Then the basement door opened.
A figure appeared at the top of the stairs.
Claire.
She descended with both hands raised.
"Don't shoot.""
I didn't have a weapon.
But she looked at me as though I did.
"Claire?""
She reached the bottom.
Her face was wet with tears.
"I told you not to come here.""
"You knew this room existed.""
"Yes.""
"You knew Jonathan was alive.""
"Yes.""
"For three years.""
"Yes.""
I stepped toward her.
"Why?""
She looked at Jonathan.
"Because Michael made me promise.""
"He's dead.""
"I know.""
"Then why keep the promise?""
"Because I loved him.""
That answer hurt.
"More than me?""
Claire shook her head.
"That's not what this was.""
"Then explain it.""
She looked at Emily.
"Both of you deserve the truth.""
She took a breath.
"Jonathan wasn't the only baby born on June 17.""
The room went silent.
I looked at Emily.
"What?""
Claire's eyes filled with tears.
"There were twins.""
Jonathan stared at her.
"What?""
She nodded.
"A boy and a girl.""
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
"Where is the girl?""
Claire looked at me.
"She's been living with you for twenty-two years.""
Emily stepped backward.
"No.""
Claire whispered, "Emily was born that night.""
I shook my head.
"That's impossible.""
"Your daughter was born in the hospital on June 17.""
"Emily's birthday is October 3.""
Claire closed her eyes.
"That's the lie.""
Emily looked at me.
Her face had gone completely white.
"My birthday isn't October 3?""
"No," Claire whispered.
"Then when was I born?""
"June 17, 2003.""
Emily covered her mouth.
I stared at Claire.
"Why did you change her birthday?""
"Because Daniel wanted both children.""
"Why?""
"Because one child could prove what he'd done.""
"And the other?""
"Could prove who the father really was.""
I looked at Jonathan.
Then Emily.
Brother and sister.
Born the same night.
Same mother.
Different fathers.
My mind struggled to catch up.
"Which child is mine?""
Claire began to cry.
"Both.""
I couldn't speak.
Jonathan looked at her.
"You told me Daniel was my father.""
"He is.""
"Then how am I his and Dad's?""
Claire looked at me.
"Because Daniel wasn't your biological father.""
Silence.
I stared at Jonathan.
"Then who is?""
Claire's voice broke.
"Michael.""
The room seemed to tilt.
My brother.
My dead brother.
Jonathan was Michael's son.
Not mine.
Not Daniel's.
Michael's.
I couldn't breathe.
"How?""
Claire wiped her face.
"Before I met you, Michael and I—"
"Stop.""
I didn't want the rest.
"You're telling me my brother was Jonathan's father?""
"Yes.""
"And Daniel knew?""
"Yes.""
"Richard knew?""
"Yes.""
"And you lied to me because—"
"Because if Daniel learned Jonathan was Michael's son, he'd kill him.""
I looked at the photographs on the wall.
Michael.
Claire.
Jonathan.
The missing years.
The lies.
Then Emily spoke.
"Mom.""
Claire turned.
"Why did you say Dad was the father?""
Claire's eyes moved to me.
"Because he was.""
I stared at her.
She whispered:
"Not biologically.""
"But you told him.""
"I needed you to believe you were his.""
Emily shook her head.
"Why?""
"Because the girl was in danger too.""
"From Daniel?""
Claire nodded.
"Daniel believed the twins belonged to him.""
Jonathan stepped forward.
"But they didn't.""
"No.""
"Then why did you give him the money?""
Claire looked at him.
"Because he found the original records.""
My phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
*You finally found the basement.*
Another.
*Now ask Claire what happened to the second birth certificate.*
I looked at her.
She went completely still.
"Where is it?""
She whispered:
"I gave it to Michael.""
"And?""
"He took it with him.""
I looked at the photograph of Michael.
Then at Jonathan.
Then Emily.
A horrible thought entered my mind.
"Claire.""
"What?""
"If Michael had Jonathan's birth certificate...""
She nodded.
"He also had Emily's.""
I stared at her.
"And when he died...""
"He was carrying proof that both children existed.""
A sound came from upstairs.
A gunshot.
The basement light went out.
Emily screamed.
Jonathan grabbed her.
May you like
And from above us, a man's voice said:
"Claire, you should have killed the truth when you had the chance.""
