Amused

Chapter 10: What She Really Stole

Nobody moved.

Richard Hale's voice came again from upstairs.

"Claire.""

My wife stood completely still.

Emily was beside me.

Jonathan was on my other side.

Carter reached inside his coat.

I grabbed his wrist.

"No.""

He looked at me.

"He's armed.""

"So are you.""

"Exactly.""

I shook my head.

"Nobody shoots anyone.""

Richard laughed from above.

"Still trying to be the hero, Mark?""

The sound of his voice brought back a memory.

Not from 2003.

From much earlier.

A conference room.

A younger Richard standing beside me.

His hand on my shoulder.

"You're a good man, Mark. That's why people trust you.""

I had spent twenty-two years believing that was a compliment.

Now I understood it had been a warning.

I looked at Claire.

"Who is the third child?""

She closed her eyes.

"Her name is Anna.""

"Where is she?""

"I don't know.""

"Claire.""

"I don't know!""

Her voice broke.

"I haven't seen her in years.""

Richard called from upstairs.

"That's not true.""

Claire flinched.

I stepped toward her.

"Who is Anna?""

She looked at me.

"Michael's daughter.""

Jonathan's face went pale.

"My sister.""

Claire nodded.

"Yes.""

Emily whispered, "Why didn't you tell us?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Of Richard?""

"Of everyone.""

I looked at the staircase.

"Why does Richard want her?""

Claire swallowed.

"Because Anna is the one person who can destroy him.""

"How?""

"She's the only one who knows where the original financial records are.""

I frowned.

"She's twenty-two?""

"No.""

"How old?""

Claire hesitated.

"Twenty-one.""

I stared at her.

"Then she was born in 2004.""

"Yes.""

"And Michael was her father.""

"Yes.""

"Who was the mother?""

Claire looked at me.

"I was.""

The words landed like another gunshot.

I couldn't speak.

"How?""

Claire began crying.

"Michael survived the crash. We stayed hidden. For months.""

"From Richard?""

"Yes.""

"And then?""

"We thought it was safe.""

"It wasn't.""

"No.""

She wiped her face.

"Michael and I had Anna.""

Jonathan looked devastated.

"You had another child with Dad.""

"Yes.""

"And you hid her too.""

"I had to.""

"Where is she?""

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Richard laughed upstairs.

"She knows exactly where Anna is.""

I looked toward the ceiling.

"Then let's stop hiding.""

Carter moved toward the stairs.

I stopped him.

"I'll go.""

"Mark—"

"I'm going.""

Claire grabbed my hand.

"No.""

I looked at her.

"I've spent twenty-two years living inside a lie.""

I squeezed her fingers.

"I'm done being afraid of what happens when I open the door.""

I walked upstairs.

Richard stood in the hallway.

He looked older.

Thinner.

His hair was almost completely gray.

But it was him.

The same eyes.

The same calm expression.

The same man who had stood beside me at Michael's funeral.

I stared at him.

"You died.""

He smiled.

"So did Michael.""

"Did you kill him?""

"I gave him a choice.""

"What choice?""

"Disappear or die.""

"You killed him.""

Richard shrugged.

"He chose badly.""

I felt my fists tighten.

"Where is Anna?""

He looked past me toward Claire.

"She knows.""

"Tell me.""

"Give me the certificates.""

"No.""

"Then Anna dies.""

Claire screamed.

"Don't!""

Richard smiled.

"There she is.""

He looked at me.

"Twenty-two years, Mark.""

"You've been protecting a family that wasn't even yours.""

I stepped closer.

"Emily is my daughter.""

"I know.""

"Jonathan is my nephew.""

"I know.""

"And Anna?""

Richard's smile disappeared.

"Anna is my daughter.""

Silence.

Claire stared at him.

"No.""

Richard looked at her.

"You really thought Michael was the father?""

"What are you saying?""

"Anna was mine.""

Claire shook her head.

"That's impossible.""

Richard laughed.

"Is it?""

My stomach turned.

"You slept with him?""

Claire couldn't answer.

Richard did.

"She slept with me.""

I looked at Claire.

"Is that true?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Yes.""

The word barely escaped.

Richard continued.

"Anna was born in 2004.""

"She carried my DNA.""

"She was the one thing I could use to control Claire.""

I looked at the woman I'd loved for twenty-two years.

"So Anna isn't Michael's daughter.""

"No," Richard said.

"She's mine.""

Claire whispered, "I thought she was Michael's.""

Richard laughed.

"That's what I wanted you to believe.""

I looked at Carter.

He was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

His face was grim.

"Is it true?""

Carter nodded.

"The DNA records confirm it.""

I stared at Richard.

"Then why did you say she could destroy you?""

"Because Anna has something I need.""

"What?""

"The ledger.""

"What ledger?""

"The one that proves everything.""

Richard stepped toward me.

"Every payment. Every account. Every person involved.""

"And Michael had it?""

"He stole it.""

"Where?""

Richard smiled.

"With Anna.""

I understood.

She wasn't just leverage.

She was the last piece.

"Where is she?""

Richard looked at Claire.

"Tell him.""

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know where she is.""

"She contacted you last month.""

Claire froze.

I turned toward her.

"What?""

"She called me.""

"Where is she?""

"I don't know.""

"Claire.""

"She said she was coming home.""

"Where?""

"Portland.""

"When?""

"Tomorrow.""

Richard smiled.

"Tonight.""

A phone rang.

Emily's.

She looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

She answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Emily?""

Emily's eyes widened.

"Who is this?""

"My name is Anna.""

Jonathan stepped closer.

"Anna?""

The voice went silent.

Then:

"Jonathan?""

He took the phone.

"Yes.""

A shaky breath.

"It's really you.""

He closed his eyes.

"Where are you?""

"At the old church.""

"Which one?""

"The church Mom used to take us to.""

Claire began crying.

"The one on Hawthorne.""

I looked at her.

"You took the children there?""

"Sometimes.""

Anna spoke again.

"I have the ledger.""

Richard moved instantly.

"Put it on speaker.""

I took the phone from Jonathan.

"Anna, don't.""

She laughed nervously.

"You're Mark.""

"Yes.""

"Mom told me about you.""

"What did she tell you?""

"That you were the father she should have trusted.""

My throat tightened.

"Anna, listen to me. Richard is here.""

Silence.

"I know.""

"How?""

"Because he's been looking for me for years.""

"Are you safe?""

"For the moment.""

"Can you leave?""

"I can.""

"Then do it.""

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because I have someone with me.""

I looked at Claire.

"Who?""

Anna whispered:

"Michael.""

The room went completely silent.

I felt my heart stop.

"That's impossible.""

Anna's voice trembled.

"He survived.""

Claire collapsed against the wall.

Jonathan stared at the phone.

"My father?""

"Yes.""

I couldn't breathe.

Richard's face changed for the first time.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Where is he?"" I demanded.

Anna didn't answer.

"Anna!""

"He told me not to tell anyone.""

"Please.""

A pause.

Then:

"He's been sick for years.""

I closed my eyes.

"Is he alive now?""

"Yes.""

Richard stepped toward me.

"Give me the phone.""

I moved away.

"Where is Michael?""

Anna whispered:

"He said he wanted to see Mark.""

My knees almost gave out.

"Put him on.""

Silence.

Then another voice.

Older.

Weak.

But unmistakable.

"Mark?""

I couldn't speak.

My brother.

Alive.

"Michael?""

"I'm sorry.""

I gripped the phone.

"Where have you been?""

"Running.""

"Why didn't you come home?""

"Because every time I tried, Richard found me.""

I looked at Richard.

He was no longer smiling.

Michael continued.

"I should have trusted you.""

I laughed through tears.

"You were my brother.""

"I know.""

"You could have come to me.""

"I couldn't risk the children.""

"Are they safe?""

"Now they are.""

I looked at Emily.

Jonathan.

Claire.

For the first time, the room didn't feel full of strangers.

It felt like a family trying to find its way back to itself.

Michael's voice weakened.

"Mark.""

"Yeah?""

"There's something else you need to know.""

"What?""

"The money.""

I frowned.

"What about it?""

"The twenty thousand Claire took.""

I looked at her.

Michael continued.

"She didn't give it to Daniel.""

"Then where did it go?""

"She paid someone to find me.""

I stared at Claire.

She nodded through tears.

"She found me.""

Michael coughed.

"That's why I came back.""

I finally understood.

The money hadn't been stolen to abandon us.

It had been stolen to bring the family home.

But there was still one question.

"Why didn't Claire tell me?""

Michael was silent.

Then he said:

"Because she knew what I did to you.""

"What did you do?""

"I made you forget.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"You were injured in the crash.""

"The night of the accident?""

"Yes.""

"You hit your head.""

"I told Claire to let you believe I died.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard threatened Emily.""

I looked at Richard.

He said nothing.

Michael continued.

"You lost pieces of that night.""

"Claire helped you fill the gaps with a story.""

I looked at my wife.

"You let me believe you abandoned me.""

"I thought it would keep you alive.""

I stared at her.

For years, I had thought the worst thing she had stolen was twenty thousand dollars.

Then I thought it was my marriage.

Then my trust.

Then twenty-two years of truth.

But standing there, listening to my brother's voice, I realized what she'd actually stolen.

My chance to know my own family.

And somehow, she had also been trying to give it back.

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Carter looked toward the window.

"I called the police.""

Richard turned.

"You did what?""

Carter smiled.

"You've been wanted for eight years.""

Richard reached inside his coat.

Carter drew his weapon.

"Don't.""

Richard froze.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Richard slowly raised his hands.

The sirens grew louder.

He looked at Claire.

"You destroyed everything.""

Claire shook her head.

"No.""

She wiped her tears.

"You did.""

Police entered minutes later.

Richard was handcuffed in the hallway.

He looked at me as officers led him away.

"You think this fixes everything?""

"No.""

"Your family will never be the same.""

I looked at Emily.

At Jonathan.

At Claire.

Then I answered.

"You're right.""

I paused.

"But at least now it's ours.""

Two days later, Michael came home.

He was thinner than I remembered.

Older.

Scarred.

But alive.

When I saw him standing on my porch, I couldn't move.

He smiled.

"Hey, little brother.""

I punched him in the shoulder.

He laughed.

Then I hugged him.

We stood there for a long time.

No explanations.

No apologies.

Just two brothers who had lost twenty-two years and somehow been given one more chance.

Behind me, Emily and Jonathan were arguing over who had inherited Michael's terrible taste in music.

Claire stood in the doorway.

Anna beside her.

For the first time, all four children were together.

And I finally understood the sentence that had haunted me from the beginning.

The $20,000 wasn't what my wife had stolen from me.

It wasn't the affair.

It wasn't even the years of lies.

What she had stolen was the truth.

But in the end, the truth was also what brought us back.

That night, I found Claire sitting alone at the kitchen table.

The same table where Emily had once whispered that her mother lied.

Claire looked up.

"Are you ever going to forgive me?""

I sat across from her.

"I don't know.""

She nodded.

"That's fair.""

I looked toward the hallway.

Voices.

Laughter.

A family I had never known existed.

Then I looked back at her.

"But I know one thing.""

"What?""

"You don't get to steal another day from me.""

Claire nodded.

"I won't.""

Outside, rain began tapping against the windows.

The same sound I'd heard the night she left.

But this time, nobody was walking out the door.

And for the first time in twenty-two years, I wasn't afraid of what tomorrow would reveal.

May you like

Because whatever the truth was...

It was finally ours.
