Chapter 5: The Birth Certificate
We drove to my mother's house without speaking.
She lived forty minutes outside Portland in the same small ranch-style home where my brother and I had grown up.
My mother was eighty-one now.
Her memory wasn't perfect.
But she remembered June 2003.
I knew she did.
Because after my brother died, she'd never stopped talking about that summer.
When she opened the door and saw me, she smiled.
Then she saw Claire behind me.
The smile vanished.
"Why is she here?""
I looked at my mother.
"Mom, I need to ask you about Michael.""
She gripped the doorframe.
"Why?""
"Because I think he didn't die for the reason you told me.""
Her eyes moved to Claire.
Claire looked away.
Mom opened the door.
"Come inside.""
The house smelled like cinnamon and old books.
Nothing had changed.
Michael's photograph still sat on the mantel.
He was twenty-nine in the picture.
Dark hair.
Blue shirt.
That same silver watch on his wrist.
I stared at it.
My pulse quickened.
"Mom.""
"What?""
"Did Michael own that watch?""
She looked toward the photograph.
"Yes.""
"Do you still have it?""
Her expression changed.
"Why?""
"Please.""
She walked to a cabinet.
After a moment, she removed a small wooden box.
She opened it.
Inside were letters, a wallet, a key, and a silver watch.
I picked it up.
Cold metal.
Scratched face.
My fingers traced the band.
Then I noticed something engraved inside.
*M.B. — J.B. — 06/17/03*
I looked at Claire.
She went pale.
"What is J.B.?""
She didn't answer.
Mom did.
"Jonathan Bennett.""
I looked at her.
"Who?""
Mom's face had gone white.
"The baby.""
I couldn't speak.
"You knew?""
She nodded.
"I knew.""
"How?""
"Michael told me.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you weren't supposed to know.""
The words hit harder than anything Claire had said.
"Mom.""
She sat down.
"Your brother came to me that morning.""
"June 17?""
"Yes.""
"What did he say?""
"He said Claire was in danger.""
I glanced at Claire.
"From Daniel?""
Mom nodded.
"He told me there had been a baby.""
"Did he say the baby was mine?""
She looked at me.
"Yes.""
The room tilted.
"Mine?""
"Michael said Claire had told Daniel the baby was his. But she had lied.""
Claire covered her mouth.
I turned toward her.
"Why?""
She started crying.
"Because Daniel was dangerous.""
Mom continued.
"Michael said he had discovered Daniel was involved with people who moved stolen money through businesses.""
"The twenty thousand.""
"Maybe.""
"What did Michael do?""
"He wanted to take the baby somewhere safe.""
"Where?""
"I don't know.""
"Did he have the birth certificate?""
Mom nodded.
"He showed it to me.""
"Where is it?""
She looked at the wooden box.
"It isn't there.""
"Where did it go?""
"Michael took it.""
"When?""
"The night he died.""
I stared at her.
"Mom, you told me Michael died in a car accident.""
"He did.""
"Then how did he have the birth certificate?""
"He was driving to meet someone.""
"Who?""
She shook her head.
"He never told me.""
I turned to Claire.
"You knew.""
"I knew he had it.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Daniel said Michael's death was my fault.""
"Was it?""
Claire looked at me.
"I don't know.""
The silence that followed was unbearable.
Then Mom said something quietly.
"Michael called me from the hospital.""
I turned.
"What?""
"Before the accident.""
"That doesn't make sense.""
"He said he was afraid.""
"Afraid of what?""
"He said Daniel had found him.""
I sat down.
"What exactly did he say?""
Mom closed her eyes.
"I remember his voice.""
She swallowed.
"He said, 'Mom, if Mark asks, tell him the baby never existed.''"
My chest tightened.
"Why would he say that?""
"Because he knew someone was listening.""
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
"Mom, please.""
She looked at me.
"Then he said something else.""
"What?""
"He said, 'The boy has his father's eyes.''"
I looked at Claire.
She was crying silently.
"Whose eyes?""
Mom didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Mine.
A noise came from the hallway.
Claire turned.
"What was that?""
I stood.
"Probably nothing.""
Then we heard footsteps upstairs.
Mom looked frightened.
"Nobody should be here.""
I moved toward the stairs.
"Stay here.""
I climbed slowly.
The footsteps stopped.
At the top of the stairs was Michael's old bedroom.
The door stood open.
I pushed it wider.
Nothing.
Then I noticed the closet.
One door was slightly open.
I pulled it.
A manila envelope fell onto the floor.
My name was written across it.
*MARK.*
I picked it up.
Inside were photocopies.
Bank statements.
Hospital records.
Police reports.
And one photograph.
I stared at it.
It showed Michael standing beside a car.
Next to him was Daniel.
And beside Daniel was another man.
I recognized him instantly.
My former boss.
Richard Hale.
The man who had sent me to Seattle in June 2003.
I felt sick.
Why would my boss be standing beside Daniel?
I flipped the photograph over.
A handwritten note said:
*They know about Jonathan.*
I turned to Claire.
"Who is Richard Hale?""
She stared at the photograph.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie.""
"I swear.""
Mom's voice came from the hallway.
"I know.""
We both turned.
Mom was holding the wooden box.
She had found another compartment inside it.
She removed a small folded piece of paper.
"Michael left this for you.""
She handed it to me.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
There were only three lines.
*Mark,*
*If you're reading this, I failed.*
*Do not trust the man who sent you to Seattle.*
I read it twice.
Then three times.
Richard Hale.
My boss.
The man who had supposedly helped me build my career.
The man who had given me the promotion that allowed us to buy our house.
The man who had stood beside me at Michael's funeral.
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
*You found the note.*
Another arrived.
*Now ask Claire where Jonathan really went.*
I looked at her.
She was staring at me.
"I don't know.""
"You know something.""
"I don't.""
"Then why are you scared?""
She didn't answer.
My phone buzzed again.
This time there was a photograph.
I opened it.
It showed a young man.
Maybe twenty-two years old.
Dark hair.
Blue eyes.
Standing outside a grocery store.
I stared at the screen.
Something about his face felt familiar.
Not vaguely.
Deeply.
Like seeing a photograph of yourself from a life you didn't remember living.
Under the picture was one sentence:
*You have been looking for the wrong missing person.*
I looked at Claire.
"Who is that?""
She began to cry.
"Mark...""
"Who is he?""
"I can't.""
"Who is he?""
She whispered:
"His name is Jonathan.""
The room went silent.
I stared at the photograph again.
Twenty-two years.
The same age as my marriage.
The same age as the secret.
The same age as the child who supposedly died.
Then I noticed the date on the photograph.
Taken two days earlier.
May you like
Jonathan was alive.
And someone had just sent me proof.
