Amused

Chapter 4: The Man Who Died

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

The motel room was silent except for the hum of the air conditioner.

Claire stared at me.

"What did he say?""

I lowered the phone.

"He said my brother wasn't the person who died that night.""

Her face collapsed.

I stepped toward her.

"Claire, what does that mean?""

She stood so quickly she knocked the lamp sideways.

"Mark, you need to leave.""

"No.""

"You need to go home.""

"No.""

"Please.""

"You've been lying to me for twenty-two years.""

"I know.""

"You lied about Daniel.""

"I know.""

"You lied about the money.""

"I know.""

"And now you're telling me my brother didn't die?""

Claire pressed both hands against her mouth.

"Who died?""

She looked at me.

"Daniel's brother.""

I felt dizzy.

"Daniel had a brother?""

"His name was Michael.""

"Why would I know him?""

"You did.""

"How?""

Claire shook her head.

"You met him once.""

"When?""

"June 17.""

The date.

Again.

Always the same date.

"What happened that night?""

Claire looked toward the window.

"You were supposed to be in Seattle until Thursday.""

"I know.""

"But you came home Wednesday.""

"Tom said that.""

"You came home because Daniel called you.""

I frowned.

"Why would Daniel call me?""

"Because he wanted you to know.""

"Know what?""

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"That I was pregnant.""

The room went completely still.

I stared at her.

"What?""

"I was pregnant.""

"With Emily?""

"No.""

The word was almost inaudible.

I took a step backward.

"No.""

"Mark—"

"Don't.""

"It wasn't what you think.""

"You were pregnant with another man's child?""

"Yes.""

I laughed.

It came out broken.

"That's what this is?""

"No.""

"Twenty-two years, Claire.""

"I know.""

"You cheated on me.""

"I did.""

"With Daniel?""

She closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

The confession should have been the end of the mystery.

Instead, it opened another door.

Because I remembered Emily.

Her birthday.

Her face.

The tiny scar above her eyebrow from falling off her bicycle.

The way she used to sleep with one foot outside the blanket.

I had been there for every moment.

I had never questioned that she was my daughter.

"Emily is mine.""

Claire looked at me.

"Yes.""

The answer came instantly.

"Then who was the baby?""

Claire's lips trembled.

"Daniel and I had a child.""

I felt my knees weaken.

"Had?""

She nodded.

"That was why you came home.""

"Where is the child?""

Claire didn't answer.

"Where is the child?""

"Mark...""

"Where?""

She whispered, "The baby died.""

I stared at her.

"You said Daniel's brother died.""

"I said someone died.""

"No. You said your brother—"

"Michael died.""

"Then who was the baby?""

Claire began crying.

"The baby was alive when you arrived at the hospital.""

My heart hammered.

"What happened?""

"You found me.""

"At the hospital?""

"Yes.""

"Why was I there?""

"Because Daniel called you.""

"Why?""

"Because he wanted money.""

I looked at the envelope on the bed.

"Twenty thousand.""

She nodded.

"That was the amount he demanded.""

"For what?""

"To keep the truth buried.""

"What truth?""

Claire looked directly at me.

"The baby didn't die.""

I stopped breathing.

"What?""

"The baby survived.""

I stared at her.

"Then where is he?""

Claire's eyes filled with terror.

"That's what Daniel has been threatening me about.""

A knock sounded on the motel door.

Three slow knocks.

Claire froze.

I turned toward it.

"Who is that?""

She grabbed my arm.

"Don't answer.""

Another three knocks.

Then a man's voice came through the door.

"Claire.""

She squeezed my wrist.

"It's Daniel.""

I looked at her.

"You said he was threatening you.""

"He is.""

"Then call the police.""

"He'll disappear.""

"Let him.""

"You don't understand.""

The voice came again.

"Claire, open the door.""

I walked toward it.

Claire grabbed my shirt.

"Mark, don't.""

I stopped with my hand inches from the handle.

"Why?""

"Because if he sees you...""

"What?""

"He'll know I told you.""

"And?""

She whispered, "Then he'll come for Emily.""

My hand dropped.

The footsteps outside moved away.

I waited.

Nothing.

I looked through the peephole.

The hallway was empty.

But something had been left on the floor.

A white envelope.

I opened the door.

"Mark!""

I stepped into the hallway.

The envelope had my name written across it.

I picked it up.

Inside was a single photograph.

I looked at it.

A baby.

Wrapped in a pale blue blanket.

On the back was a date.

*June 17, 2003.*

And underneath it:

*You held him first.*

I turned around.

Claire was standing in the doorway.

She saw the photograph.

Her knees buckled.

I caught her before she hit the floor.

"Claire?""

She clutched my shirt.

"I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

She shook her head.

"You weren't supposed to remember.""

"Remember what?""

Her eyes met mine.

"You were the one who took the baby.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

"You carried him out of the hospital.""

"Why would I do that?""

"Because Daniel told you the baby was yours.""

I stared at her.

"You told me it was his.""

"I know.""

"Then why would I believe him?""

"Because you were drunk. You were angry. And you thought I had betrayed you.""

I looked down at the photograph.

The baby had my eyes.

Or maybe I only wanted them to.

"What happened after I left the hospital?""

Claire covered her face.

"I don't know.""

"You don't know?""

"I woke up the next morning and the baby was gone.""

"And my brother?""

"Michael was found dead that afternoon.""

"How?""

"Car accident.""

I stared at her.

"Where was Daniel?""

"Gone.""

"Where was the baby?""

"I didn't know.""

"And you never told me?""

"I thought you had taken him.""

My head spun.

"Taken him where?""

"I didn't know.""

"Then why stay with me?""

She looked at me with an expression I'd never seen before.

"Because you came home carrying Emily.""

I frowned.

"What?""

"Emily was four.""

"I know.""

"You came home from the hospital and put your hand on her bedroom door.""

She began crying again.

"You looked at me and said, 'She's all I have.''"

I couldn't remember saying it.

But something inside me recognized the words.

A fragment.

A hallway.

A child's night-light.

Claire standing at the end of it.

Blood on her sleeve.

A baby crying.

And Daniel shouting.

I grabbed my head.

Claire stepped toward me.

"Mark?""

I stumbled backward.

"I remember something.""

"What?""

"Daniel was there.""

Claire went still.

"At the hospital.""

"Yes.""

"What was he doing?""

I closed my eyes.

"He was arguing with someone.""

"Who?""

"I don't know.""

Then another memory surfaced.

A man's hand.

A wedding ring.

A silver watch.

And a voice saying:

"If he gets the baby, none of us are safe.""

I opened my eyes.

"Claire.""

"What?""

"Daniel wasn't alone.""

She stared at me.

"Who was with him?""

"I don't know.""

I looked again at the photograph.

The baby's blanket.

The hospital.

The date.

Then I noticed something I'd missed.

In the corner of the photograph, barely visible, was a hospital bracelet.

The baby's name had been written on it.

I zoomed in with my phone.

The letters were blurred.

But there were enough to read.

*J. Bennett.*

My hands started shaking.

"Claire.""

She looked.

"What?""

"Why does this say Bennett?""

She didn't answer.

"Why does the baby's bracelet have our last name?""

Claire whispered, "Because I gave him your name.""

"Why?""

She looked at me.

"Because he was yours.""

I couldn't breathe.

"What did you just say?""

Before she could answer, her phone buzzed.

A message.

She looked at the screen.

Then she handed it to me.

There was one sentence.

*Ask Mark why his brother was carrying the baby's birth certificate when he died.*

I looked up.

"My brother had the birth certificate?""

Claire nodded.

And suddenly I understood why someone had spent twenty-two years making sure I never remembered that night.

Because the truth wasn't simply that my wife had cheated.

May you like

It was that someone had stolen a child.

And somehow, my dead brother had been the last person holding the proof.
