Chapter 8: The Second Certificate
We ran.
There was no time to think.
Jonathan grabbed Emily's hand and pulled her toward the far wall.
I followed.
Another gunshot exploded upstairs.
Dust fell from the ceiling.
Claire screamed, "There's another exit!""
"Where?""
"Behind the shelves!""
Jonathan shoved the cabinet aside.
A narrow opening appeared.
"Go!""
Emily crawled through first.
Jonathan followed.
Claire pushed me toward the opening.
"Move!""
I climbed through just as another shot struck the wall behind us.
We stumbled into an old storage shed outside.
Cold rain hit my face.
I turned toward the farmhouse.
"Who is he?""
Claire grabbed my arm.
"We have to get away.""
"Who?""
"Daniel.""
Jonathan looked toward the house.
"That's not Daniel.""
Claire froze.
"What?""
Jonathan stared at the upstairs window.
"I know his voice.""
I looked at him.
"Who is it?""
He swallowed.
"Richard.""
I shook my head.
"Richard Hale is dead.""
"Apparently not.""
We ran to my car.
I unlocked it.
"Get in.""
Claire stopped.
"No.""
"What?""
"You can't take us to your house.""
"Why?""
"Because they'll follow.""
"Who?""
She looked at Jonathan.
"The people who have been watching him.""
I stared at her.
"You know who they are.""
"I know enough.""
"Then tell me.""
She shook her head.
"Not here.""
We got into the car.
I drove without knowing where we were going.
For ten minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Emily said quietly, "Mom.""
Claire turned toward her.
"Yes?""
"Why did you change my birthday?""
Claire closed her eyes.
"Because the hospital records had to disappear.""
"You made me live with a fake birthday.""
"I wanted you alive.""
"You lied to me.""
"I know.""
"You lied to Dad.""
"I know.""
"You lied to Jonathan.""
"I know.""
Jonathan looked out the window.
"You told me I was Daniel's son.""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"From him?""
"From everyone.""
I glanced at him in the rearview mirror.
"Why did Michael take the certificates?""
Claire answered.
"Because he knew the children would never be safe if the records stayed in the hospital.""
"Then why didn't he bring them to me?""
"Because he didn't trust himself to keep you safe.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
She looked at me.
"You were already being watched.""
"By Richard.""
"Yes.""
"How long?""
"Before you even met me.""
I felt my hands tighten around the steering wheel.
"Richard knew about Michael?""
"He knew about the twins.""
"How?""
"He was Daniel's partner.""
I looked at her.
"Business partner?""
"No.""
She swallowed.
"Something worse.""
We drove another mile.
Then I saw headlights behind us.
A black SUV.
It followed when I turned.
I turned again.
It followed.
Jonathan sat forward.
"That's them.""
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
Claire's breathing quickened.
"Don't go home.""
"Where do you want me to go?""
"St. Vincent's.""
"The hospital?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because Michael left something there.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
"The original medical file.""
We arrived twenty minutes later.
The hospital was mostly dark.
Claire led us through an employee entrance.
"How do you know this way?""
"I worked here.""
"When?""
"In 2003.""
I stopped.
"You worked here?""
"As a nurse.""
The realization hit me.
"That's why you knew the records.""
"Yes.""
"And the hospital.""
"Yes.""
"And the birth.""
"Yes.""
We reached a basement archive.
Claire unlocked a metal door.
Rows of boxes filled the room.
She walked straight to one.
*2003 — MATERNITY*
She pulled it down.
Inside were dozens of files.
She found one.
Her hands trembled.
"Here.""
I opened it.
The first page was a birth record.
*June 17, 2003.*
Mother: Claire Bennett.
Twin A: Male.
Twin B: Female.
Father: *Unknown.*
I stared.
"Unknown?""
Claire nodded.
"The hospital didn't know.""
I turned the page.
A handwritten note had been attached.
*DNA testing requested.*
"Did they test?""
"No.""
"Why?""
"Because the samples disappeared.""
I looked at her.
"Who took them?""
"Richard.""
The room felt colder.
"Why?""
"Because he wanted to know who the father was.""
"And?""
Claire looked at Jonathan.
"The result came back.""
"What did it say?""
She hesitated.
"Michael Bennett.""
Jonathan closed his eyes.
I felt something crack inside me.
My brother.
He had a son.
A son he'd died trying to save.
I turned another page.
There was a second report.
Twin B.
Female.
DNA result:
*Mark Bennett — biological father.*
I stopped.
Emily was standing beside me.
I looked at her.
She looked at me.
Neither of us spoke.
Then she whispered, "Dad.""
I couldn't answer.
She touched my hand.
"Is it true?""
I nodded.
She started crying.
"So I really am your daughter.""
I pulled her into my arms.
"Always.""
She held me tightly.
Behind us, Claire began crying.
I turned.
"You knew.""
"Yes.""
"For twenty-two years.""
"Yes.""
"You knew I was her father.""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you let me believe she was born in October?""
"Because Daniel was looking for a June baby.""
I stared at her.
"And you thought changing her birthday would save her.""
"It did.""
"For twenty-two years.""
"Yes.""
"And Jonathan?""
"His identity was changed completely.""
I looked at him.
"Who did the paperwork?""
"Michael.""
I stared at the documents.
Michael had forged the records.
He had hidden his own son.
He had hidden my daughter.
He had tried to protect both of them.
Then he died.
I closed the file.
"Where is the second certificate?""
Claire's face changed.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie.""
"I swear.""
"You said Michael had both.""
"He did.""
"Then someone took them.""
She nodded.
"After the accident.""
"Who?""
"Richard.""
I turned toward the shelves.
"Then why is this file here?""
Claire looked confused.
"What?""
"This file survived.""
She stared at it.
"I don't understand.""
I flipped to the final page.
There was a signature.
A witness signature.
I recognized it.
Richard Hale.
But beneath his signature was another name.
A name I hadn't expected.
*Detective Samuel Carter.*
My old neighbor.
A retired Portland detective.
A man who had attended Michael's funeral.
A man who had told me the accident was unavoidable.
I stared at the signature.
"Claire.""
"What?""
"Who was Samuel Carter?""
She looked at the page.
Her face went white.
"He was the detective assigned to Michael's accident.""
"And?""
She shook her head.
"He wasn't supposed to be involved with Richard.""
I felt a cold certainty settle over me.
"Apparently he was.""
Then footsteps sounded outside the archive.
Everyone froze.
One.
Two.
Three.
A key turned in the lock.
Claire whispered, "We have to go.""
The door opened.
An older man stood there.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
A police badge hanging from his belt.
Detective Samuel Carter.
He looked at me.
Then at Jonathan.
Then Emily.
His expression changed.
"You found them.""
I stepped in front of my children.
"Where are the birth certificates?""
Carter smiled sadly.
"I wondered how long it would take you.""
"Where are they?""
He closed the door behind him.
"Safe.""
"With who?""
"With the only person who can explain everything.""
"Who?""
Carter reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old cassette tape.
"Your brother.""
I stared at it.
"Michael is dead.""
"I know.""
"Then what is this?""
Carter held the tape toward me.
"His confession.""
I took one step forward.
Carter smiled.
"But before you listen, you need to know something.""
"What?""
He looked directly at Emily.
"Your father wasn't the only man who knew about the twins.""
Emily frowned.
Carter's eyes shifted to me.
"Claire knew Michael was alive after the accident.""
The world went silent.
Claire whispered, "No.""
Carter said, "She saw him.""
I turned toward my wife.
"Claire?""
She couldn't speak.
Carter continued.
"Michael survived the crash.""
I stared at Claire.
"And you left him?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"No.""
"Then where did he go?""
May you like
Carter's expression hardened.
"To find the children.""
