Amused

Chapter 9: The Fall Of David Carter

The next forty-eight hours felt like living inside a nightmare.

Every news channel showed my face.

Every article used the same words.

Fraud.

Betrayal.

Corruption.

The internet had already decided I was guilty.

Nobody cared about the truth.

They cared about a story.

And Robert had created the perfect one.

I sat in the conference room at my company headquarters.

The same building my father built.

The same place where I spent years trying to honor his legacy.

Now employees looked at me differently.

Suspicious.

Afraid.

My assistant, Rachel, walked in.

"David.""

I looked up.

"Tell me you found something.""

She placed a folder on the table.

"We found the source of the leaked documents.""

My heart jumped.

"Who?""

She hesitated.

Then:

"Laura's firm.""

Of course.

I leaned back.

"She's trying to destroy us completely.""

Rachel nodded.

"But there's something else.""

She opened the folder.

"Some documents were forged.""

Daniel looked through them.

"Not some.""

He pointed.

"All of them.""

Emma stood beside me.

"Can we prove it?""

Daniel nodded.

"We can.""

"How?""

He looked at me.

"Your father knew this day might come.""

He opened the hard drive.

"There is one final file.""

A video.

My father's face appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My hands covered my mouth.

I had not seen him move or speak in years.

The video began.

"David, if you are watching this, then I failed to stop them.""

My eyes filled.

"I'm sorry.""

My father looked directly into the camera.

"Robert will try to take everything from you.""

He paused.

"But remember this.""

"Truth does not disappear because people bury it.""

The video continued.

He explained everything.

The stolen money.

The fake documents.

The plan.

But then came the part nobody expected.

"My biggest mistake was trusting Michael.""

Michael lowered his head.

My father continued.

"But my greatest mistake was not protecting David from the person who would use Michael.""

A knock interrupted us.

Everyone turned.

The door opened.

Michael walked in.

But he wasn't alone.

Police officers stood behind him.

My heart stopped.

"What is this?""

One officer stepped forward.

"David Carter?""

"Yes.""

"You need to come with us.""

Emma immediately moved.

"Why?""

The officer held up a document.

"Your brother has provided evidence.""

I looked at Michael.

"You did this?""

He looked devastated.

"No.""

"Then why are they here?""

Michael looked at the officer.

"Because I told them everything.""

I couldn't believe it.

"You turned yourself in?""

He nodded.

"I was wrong.""

For the first time, my brother wasn't defending himself.

"I spent years blaming you because Dad trusted you.""

His voice cracked.

"But Robert used me.""

I stared at him.

"You could have told me.""

"I was ashamed.""

The police officer waited.

Michael looked at me.

"I destroyed our family.""

A silence followed.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

"What happened?""

He looked at me.

"Laura disappeared.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where?""

"No one knows.""

Then Daniel looked at Emma.

"Except she left something behind.""

"What?""

He showed us a photograph.

Laura standing outside a house.

A house I recognized.

My childhood home.

My mother's house.

I felt cold.

"Why would she be there?""

Daniel zoomed in.

Behind Laura was someone else.

Someone opening the door.

My mother.

Emma whispered:

"She wasn't working with Robert.""

Everyone looked at her.

"She was working with your mother.""

My blood ran cold.

May you like

Because the person we thought was protecting us...

Had been hiding the biggest secret of all.
