Chapter 6: The Name Hidden In The Shadows
The confession shook in my hands.
I read the first line.
Then the second.
Then I stopped.
Because the name written at the bottom was impossible.
It wasn't Michael.
It wasn't my mother.
It wasn't even someone I knew well.
It was someone who had been part of our lives for years.
Someone who had attended our wedding.
Someone who had smiled in every family photograph.
My eyes lifted slowly.
Daniel was watching me.
Emma was holding her breath.
Michael looked terrified.
And my mother whispered the name before I could say it.
"Robert.""
My father's old business partner.
The man who had hugged me at my father's funeral.
The man who told me, "Your father would be proud of you.""
The man who had spent years pretending to protect my family's company.
I looked back at the confession.
"What did he do?""
Daniel stepped closer.
"Robert was the one who convinced Michael that he could take control of everything.""
Michael immediately shook his head.
"That's not true.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Isn't it?""
Michael didn't answer.
That silence told me enough.
I turned toward my brother.
"You knew.""
His jaw tightened.
"I knew some things.""
"Some things?""
My voice echoed through the room.
"You tried to destroy my marriage.""
"I was trying to protect myself.""
"By making me believe my wife cheated on me?""
Michael looked away.
"You don't understand.""
"No.""
I stepped closer.
"I understand perfectly.""
For years, I had looked up to my older brother.
When our father died, Michael was the one who told me everything would be okay.
He was the one who helped me handle the funeral.
The one who stood beside me when I inherited the company.
And now I was realizing something painful.
Sometimes the person standing beside you is only there to make sure they are close enough to take everything.
Daniel opened another folder.
"Robert created a plan years ago.""
He placed documents on the table.
"He knew your father trusted him.""
I looked through the papers.
There were emails.
Financial records.
Contracts.
My father's signature.
But something was wrong.
The dates.
"These documents were altered.""
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly.""
Emma looked at me.
"He was preparing this long before your father passed away.""
I felt sick.
"Why?""
Daniel answered.
"Because your father discovered what he was doing.""
The room became quiet.
My father's death had always been something I accepted.
A sudden illness.
A tragedy.
Something nobody could control.
But now another possibility was sitting in front of me.
"Are you saying my father knew?""
Daniel looked at me carefully.
"Your father knew someone close to him was stealing.""
My hands tightened.
"Who?""
Nobody spoke.
Then Michael finally whispered:
"Me.""
Everyone looked at him.
His eyes were red.
"I didn't start it.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You expect me to believe that?""
"I was desperate.""
"You betrayed Dad.""
"I made mistakes.""
"Mistakes?""
I laughed.
"You helped someone steal from our family.""
Michael looked broken.
But I couldn't feel sorry for him.
Not yet.
"Why?""
He looked at the floor.
"Because Robert promised me something.""
"What?""
"That I would become CEO.""
The room went silent.
All those years.
All that destruction.
For a title.
For power.
For money.
Emma moved closer to me.
"David...""
I looked at her.
And for the first time since that terrible afternoon in her office, I didn't see someone who had betrayed me.
I saw someone who had been carrying a burden alone.
"I should have trusted you.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You had every reason not to.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"I should have listened.""
Before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
"What?""
He walked away from us.
A few seconds later, he returned.
"We have a problem.""
Michael looked nervous.
"What now?""
Daniel looked at me.
"Robert knows we're here.""
My stomach dropped.
"How?""
Daniel held up his phone.
"Because someone just sent him a message.""
I looked around the room.
Everyone froze.
Someone had told him.
Someone had warned him.
Someone inside this house.
Daniel looked at the message again.
Then slowly turned the phone toward us.
The message contained only six words.
"She never told him the whole truth.""
My eyes moved to Emma.
Because the message wasn't about Michael.
May you like
It wasn't about Robert.
It was about her.
