Chapter 4: The Truth We Both Feared
I couldn't speak.
The phone felt heavy in my hand.
"What does that mean, Michael?""
My brother didn't answer immediately.
That silence felt familiar.
Like everyone in my life knew a secret except me.
"Ask Emma about the missing money.""
I looked at my wife.
She shook her head.
"Don't listen to him.""
Michael continued.
"Ask her why the transfers happened after she discovered them.""
My heart sank.
"Michael, explain yourself.""
But he only said:
"Come see me.""
Then he hung up.
I stood there staring at the phone.
Emma looked terrified.
"David, please don't go.""
"Why?""
"Because he wants to separate us.""
I looked at her.
"Maybe he already did.""
The words hurt both of us.
But they were true.
The next morning, I met Michael at a small coffee shop.
He arrived early.
He always did.
That was something I remembered about him.
He liked control.
He smiled when he saw me.
"You're angry.""
"Should I not be?""
He leaned back.
"I knew Emma would tell you eventually.""
"Tell me the truth.""
He looked around.
Then lowered his voice.
"David, your wife has been hiding things from you.""
I placed the documents on the table.
"Like what?""
"Like the fact that she met with Daniel multiple times.""
"I know.""
"Like the fact that she opened a separate account.""
I froze.
"What?""
Michael smiled slightly.
There it was.
The same confidence Daniel had.
The same look.
"You didn't know.""
I stood up.
"You're lying.""
"Am I?""
He pulled out a folder.
Inside were bank statements.
Another account.
Emma's name.
I felt sick.
"Why?""
Michael looked at me.
"Because you deserve the truth.""
"No. You deserve something.""
His expression changed.
"What?""
"To see me break.""
The smile disappeared.
For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.
I walked away.
But before I reached the door, he said something.
Something that stopped me.
"Ask Emma why she transferred the money into an account she created after our father's death.""
I turned.
My father's death.
A memory I tried not to revisit.
The inheritance.
The family company.
The argument between Michael and me.
I drove home faster than I should have.
When I arrived, Emma was sitting on the couch.
She knew.
She could see it on my face.
"What did he tell you?""
I held up the folder.
"Why didn't you tell me about this account?""
Her face fell.
"Because I was protecting you.""
"Everyone keeps saying that.""
I threw the folder onto the table.
"Everyone keeps lying and calling it protection.""
She started crying.
"David, listen.""
"No. You listen.""
My voice shook.
"I walked into your office thinking I was catching you cheating.""
"I know.""
"I found out it was a plan.""
"I know.""
"Then I found out my brother thinks you're hiding something.""
She closed her eyes.
"And now I find this.""
She whispered:
"The money was never for me.""
"Then where did it go?""
She looked at me.
"Your father.""
I froze.
"What?""
Emma opened the drawer beside her.
She pulled out an old envelope.
"My father-in-law left something behind.""
I stared at the envelope.
My father's handwriting was on it.
My name.
Written years ago.
"David, I found this after his funeral.""
My hands trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Only three sentences.
But those three sentences changed everything.
"David, if you are reading this, it means Michael has already tried to take what belongs to you.""
I looked at Emma.
She whispered:
"I didn't investigate you.""
A tear rolled down her face.
"I investigated your brother.""
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From Daniel.
One photo.
A security camera image.
A man entering my house late at night.
The timestamp was from the previous evening.
May you like
And the man in the picture was not Michael.
It was someone I never expected.
