Amused

Chapter 5: The Person We Never Suspected

The photograph blurred in front of my eyes.

I zoomed in.

Again.

And again.

But the face didn't change.

It couldn't.

Because the person standing inside my house was someone I trusted.

Someone who had comforted me.

Someone who had cried with me after my father's funeral.

My mother.

I dropped the phone onto the table.

Emma looked at me.

"What is it?""

I couldn't answer.

She picked up the phone.

Her expression changed instantly.

"No.""

That single word told me she knew.

"You knew?""

She shook her head quickly.

"Not this.""

"Then explain.""

Emma sat down slowly.

"I knew someone in your family was involved.""

"But not her?""

She looked devastated.

"No.""

I called my mother immediately.

She answered after the second ring.

"David?""

Her voice was warm.

Normal.

That almost made it worse.

"Mom.""

"Are you okay?""

I looked at Emma.

Then at the photograph.

"Where were you last night?""

Silence.

A long silence.

My mother's breathing changed.

"Why are you asking me that?""

"Because I have a picture.""

Another pause.

Then:

"David, please don't do this over the phone.""

My stomach dropped.

"What does that mean?""

"I need to explain.""

I closed my eyes.

Everyone had explanations.

Everyone had reasons.

Everyone had secrets.

"Come over," she said quietly.

"I think it's time you know everything.""

An hour later, Emma and I sat in my childhood home.

The same living room where I opened birthday presents.

The same walls that held family photos.

Except now every picture felt like a lie.

My mother sat across from us.

Older than I remembered.

Tired.

She looked at Emma.

"I'm sorry.""

Emma shook her head.

"Why?""

My mother looked at me.

"Because your father was right.""

My heart stopped.

"What about Dad?""

She reached into a drawer and pulled out a small box.

"I should have given you this years ago.""

Inside were documents.

Property records.

Company papers.

And one letter.

Another letter from my father.

I opened it.

"David, never trust anyone who tells you they are protecting you while hiding the truth.""

I looked up.

My mother started crying.

"Your father discovered Michael was stealing from the company.""

I felt numb.

"He knew?""

She nodded.

"But before he could expose him, he got sick.""

Emma looked at the documents.

"So the divorce papers?""

My mother answered.

"Michael created them.""

"And Daniel?""

"He found out.""

I looked at Emma.

She was right.

The whole time.

My wife wasn't betraying me.

She was fighting a battle I didn't even know existed.

My mother continued.

"Michael convinced me that if we didn't remove David from the company, we would lose everything.""

I stared at her.

"You helped him?""

She looked down.

"I was scared.""

Those words again.

The same excuse.

The same wound.

But this time, I saw something different.

Regret.

Not manipulation.

Regret.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

Michael walked inside.

And he wasn't alone.

Daniel followed behind him.

My body tensed.

"What is this?""

Michael smiled.

"Finally.""

He looked at Emma.

"Your little game is over.""

Daniel stepped forward.

But this time, he wasn't smiling.

He looked angry.

Michael noticed.

"What's wrong?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

"David, there's something you need to know.""

Michael's face changed.

"Don't.""

Daniel ignored him.

"The divorce papers weren't the only thing Michael prepared.""

He pulled another folder from his coat.

Inside was a single page.

A confession.

Signed.

By Michael.

I looked at my brother.

"What did you do?""

For the first time in my life, Michael looked afraid.

Daniel placed the paper on the table.

"Your brother planned everything.""

I picked it up.

The first sentence made my hands shake.

Because it revealed the one person who had started this entire nightmare.

May you like

And it wasn't Michael.

It was someone who had been standing beside him from the beginning.
