Amused

Chapter 1: The Door I Shouldn't Have Opened

I thought I was walking into my wife's office with her favorite lunch, but I was actually walking into the moment my entire marriage started falling apart.

I thought I was bringing her a sweet surprise.

I thought I was reminding her that even after eight years together, I still noticed the little things.

I was wrong.

The first thing I saw when I opened the door was not my wife's computer screen, not the stack of reports on her desk, not the framed photo of us from our anniversary trip.

It was her arms wrapped around another man.

For three seconds, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

My hand was still holding the paper bag from the restaurant she loved. The smell of her favorite pasta filled the small office, completely out of place in a room that suddenly felt like a crime scene.

My wife, Emma, was standing near the window.

Her body was pressed against his.

Her hands rested on his chest.

And his hands were around her waist.

The bag slipped from my fingers.

The container hit the floor.

Sauce spilled across the polished tiles.

Emma turned around.

Her face went pale.

"David?""

I didn't answer.

I couldn't.

The man standing behind her looked nothing like someone who had just been caught doing something wrong. He didn't panic. He didn't step away quickly. He didn't apologize.

He simply looked at me.

Then he smiled.

Not a nervous smile.

Not an embarrassed smile.

A confident one.

A smile that said he had been waiting for this moment.

Emma pushed away from him.

"David, please, wait. It's not what you think.""

I stared at her.

Those words.

The oldest words in the history of betrayal.

"It's not what you think.""

I laughed quietly because I didn't know what else to do.

"What exactly am I supposed to think, Emma?""

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

The man adjusted the sleeve of his expensive coat and stepped forward.

"You're David, right?""

I looked at him.

"Who are you?""

He ignored the question.

Instead, he glanced at Emma.

Then back at me.

"You should ask your wife where she spent last weekend.""

The room became silent.

Even the traffic outside disappeared.

"What?""

Emma's expression changed instantly.

"Daniel, stop.""

That was the first time I heard his name.

Daniel.

He smiled again.

"She didn't tell you?""

My heart started beating harder.

I looked at Emma.

"Tell me what?""

She looked away.

That hurt more than seeing her with him.

Because guilt had a face.

And I was looking directly at it.

"Emma.""

She swallowed.

"David, I can explain.""

"Explain what?""

My voice cracked.

"The man holding you in your office? Or the weekend you apparently forgot to mention?""

Daniel walked past her and picked up the fallen food container from the floor.

He looked at the ruined meal.

Then he looked at me.

"Funny, isn't it?""

"What is?""

"You came here thinking you were surprising her.""

He dropped the container into the trash.

"But she had been preparing a surprise for you too.""

Emma's eyes widened.

"Daniel, don't.""

I stepped closer.

"What does that mean?""

Neither of them answered.

And that silence told me more than words could.

I looked around the office.

The place where Emma spent most of her days.

The place I had never questioned.

The place where she always said she was too busy for unexpected visits.

Suddenly every late meeting, every canceled dinner, every weekend emergency felt different.

I hated that my mind was searching through memories, looking for evidence.

But it was.

Eight years of marriage.

Eight years of believing I knew the woman beside me.

And now a stranger was standing in front of me, suggesting my entire relationship was built on lies.

"Emma," I whispered, "where were you last weekend?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

But she still didn't answer.

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

"Maybe she should show you herself.""

Emma immediately stepped forward.

"No.""

That single word froze me.

Because she wasn't saying no to him.

She was saying no because she knew what I was about to see.

Daniel unlocked his phone.

"David, before you decide whether your wife betrayed you, you deserve to know the truth.""

He turned the screen toward me.

And the picture on it made my blood run cold.

Because it wasn't a photo of Emma with Daniel.

It was a photo of Emma standing in front of my house.

Holding a document.

A document with my name written across the top.

May you like

And underneath it were words I never expected to see.

Divorce Agreement.
