Amused

Chapter 2: The Secret She Buried

I stared at the phone screen until the words stopped looking real.

Divorce Agreement.

My name.

My wife's signature.

A date from three weeks earlier.

Three weeks.

For three weeks, Emma had been carrying a plan to end our marriage while I was still waking up every morning believing we were okay.

"Where did you get that?""

My voice sounded different.

Even to me.

Daniel lowered the phone.

"From the person who prepared it.""

I looked at Emma.

"Is this real?""

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

The worst part about betrayal isn't always the lie.

Sometimes it's the moment when the person you love chooses silence instead of fighting for the truth.

"Emma.""

She wiped her eyes.

"David, please listen to me.""

"Listen to what?""

I pointed at the phone.

"That you secretly planned to leave me?""

Her face tightened.

"It's complicated.""

I almost smiled.

Complicated.

Another word people use when they don't want to say something painful.

"What part is complicated?""

She walked toward me.

"I wasn't trying to hurt you.""

"You signed divorce papers.""

"I was scared.""

"Of what?""

She stopped.

Daniel watched us from the corner of the room.

I hated that he was there.

I hated that a stranger knew something about my marriage before I did.

Emma lowered her voice.

"Can we talk somewhere else?""

I looked around the office.

"The truth suddenly needs privacy?""

She flinched.

That reaction hurt.

Because it meant I was right.

I walked out.

Not because I was calm.

Because I wasn't.

I needed air.

The hallway felt too bright.

Too normal.

People walked past carrying coffee cups, laughing, talking about meetings.

Nobody knew that my entire life had just cracked open behind a closed office door.

Emma followed me.

"David.""

I kept walking.

"Please.""

I stopped near the elevator.

"What happened last weekend?""

She looked down.

"I went to see someone.""

"Who?""

She hesitated.

And that hesitation destroyed whatever hope I had left.

"Daniel.""

I closed my eyes.

"So you were with him.""

"Not like that.""

I laughed.

"Not like that?""

She grabbed my arm.

"Please don't do this.""

"Don't do what?""

"Assume the worst.""

I pulled my arm away.

"Emma, I walked into your office and found you in another man's arms.""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"There is a reason.""

"Then tell me.""

She looked toward the office door.

Daniel was still inside.

"I can't explain everything here.""

I stared at her.

"Why? Because he already knows?""

She didn't answer.

I left.

I drove home without remembering half the journey.

My hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly they hurt.

Every street reminded me of something.

The coffee shop where we had our first date.

The park where I proposed.

The apartment where we spent our first year married.

All those memories suddenly felt like they belonged to someone else.

When I got home, I noticed something strange.

Emma's suitcase was missing.

I walked upstairs.

Our bedroom looked different.

Not because anything had changed.

Because I was seeing it differently.

The photographs on the wall.

The clothes in the closet.

The wedding picture on the dresser.

I picked up the frame.

Eight years.

I remembered that day perfectly.

Emma crying as she walked toward me.

Promising we would always choose each other.

My phone rang.

It was an unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice spoke.

"David?""

"Yes?""

"This is Laura. I work at the law firm handling your wife's case.""

My stomach dropped.

"My wife's case?""

There was a pause.

Then she said:

"Mr. Carter, I think you need to know that Emma wasn't the one who originally requested the divorce.""

I froze.

"What?""

The voice became quieter.

"Your wife was trying to stop it.""

I sat down slowly.

"What are you talking about?""

Before she could answer, another notification appeared on my phone.

A message.

From Daniel.

One sentence.

May you like

One sentence that changed everything.

"Ask your wife why she paid me to pretend I was her lover.""
