Chapter 7: The Truth Emma Hid From Me
I stared at Emma.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
"What's he talking about?""
Emma didn't answer.
That hurt more than anything.
Because I knew that expression.
The expression of someone deciding whether to reveal a secret.
"Emma.""
She closed her eyes.
"I'm sorry.""
Those words made my chest tighten.
Not again.
Not another secret.
Not another explanation.
"What didn't you tell me?""
She looked at my mother.
Then at Daniel.
Finally, she looked at me.
"The divorce papers weren't just a trap.""
I waited.
"They were real.""
The words hit like a punch.
"What?""
Emma stepped closer.
"David, listen to me.""
"No.""
My voice was quiet.
"Explain.""
She took a shaky breath.
"Three months ago, when I discovered the financial problems, I contacted a lawyer.""
"I know.""
"But I didn't contact him to divorce you.""
"Then why were the papers real?""
She looked down.
"Because I needed protection.""
I frowned.
"Protection from who?""
She hesitated.
"From you.""
The room went silent.
I felt like the air had been removed.
"From me?""
She nodded.
"I thought you were involved.""
I stared at her.
"Why would you think that?""
"Because every time I found something, you were connected to it.""
She pulled out her phone.
"I found messages between you and Robert.""
My face changed.
"What?""
"Messages about company finances.""
I shook my head.
"Those were business conversations.""
"I know that now.""
"But then?""
She nodded.
"I didn't know.""
I remembered those messages.
Late nights.
Business problems.
Questions about missing money.
Nothing more.
But from her perspective...
Maybe it looked different.
"So you thought I was helping them.""
"I thought I married someone who was hiding a second life.""
I looked away.
That sentence hurt because I had thought the same about her.
For a moment, we were both guilty of the same thing.
We were both afraid.
We were both looking for the truth.
And we were both too scared to ask.
Emma wiped her tears.
"Daniel helped me investigate because I didn't know who to trust.""
I looked at Daniel.
"And the office scene?""
He sighed.
"The plan was to make Robert think Emma and I had evidence.""
"By pretending to have an affair?""
Daniel nodded.
"It was the only way to make him believe Emma had turned against you.""
I shook my head.
"It almost destroyed us.""
Emma whispered:
"I know.""
A silence followed.
Then Michael spoke.
"You two are wasting time.""
Everyone turned.
He looked toward the window.
"Robert isn't going to wait for us to have a family reunion.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Why should we trust you?""
Michael swallowed.
"Because I know where he is.""
Nobody moved.
"What?""
Michael looked at me.
"Robert kept copies of everything.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Where?""
Michael hesitated.
Then said:
"Your father's old office.""
The old office.
The one nobody had entered since his death.
I remembered the last time I was there.
My father sitting behind his desk.
Telling me:
"Never confuse loyalty with obedience.""
At the time, I didn't understand.
Now I did.
We drove there that night.
The building looked abandoned.
Dust covered the windows.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
Daniel unlocked the door.
Inside, everything was exactly as my father left it.
The desk.
The bookshelves.
The old leather chair.
I walked slowly around the room.
Then I noticed something.
A painting on the wall.
My father and me.
A picture taken when I was twenty.
I touched the frame.
It moved.
Daniel noticed.
"Wait.""
He removed it.
Behind it was a small safe.
My heart started racing.
My father had hidden something.
Michael stepped closer.
"I never knew about that.""
I looked at him.
"I believe you.""
Those words surprised both of us.
Daniel opened the safe.
Inside were documents.
A hard drive.
And a handwritten note.
I picked up the note.
It only had one sentence.
"David, if you found this, then Robert already knows you know.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
Daniel plugged in the hard drive.
Files appeared.
Thousands of them.
Financial records.
Videos.
Messages.
Then one video file opened automatically.
The screen showed Robert.
Sitting in this very office.
Talking to someone.
Someone whose face was hidden.
Robert said:
"The boy will never discover the truth.""
The hidden person replied:
"What about his wife?""
Robert smiled.
"She will become the reason he loses everything.""
Emma grabbed my hand.
Because she recognized the voice.
Before the video ended, the person stepped into the light.
May you like
And my entire world stopped.
Because the person helping Robert was someone I had trusted even more than Michael.
